Wolves are believed to be planning a shock swoop for Ajax captain and Danish international Nicolai Boilesen.

The 15-times capped defender, a left-back who is also comfortable at centre-half, hasn't played this season owing to a contract dispute.

The 23-year-old's current deal expires this summer and reports in Holland suggest Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has confirmed Wolves' interest.

Boilesen, tracked by Villa in the summer, could be available for as little as £300,000.

He turned down a new deal with the Dutch giants last summer and boss Frank de Boer has refused to play him ever since.

Boilesen is thought to have had his sights set on a Premier League move but with no other interest forthcoming, Wolves are favourites for his signature.

The 6ft 1in defender is club captain at Ajax and has made 66 appearances for the club.

Ajax are willing to let Boilesen move now for a relatively small fee, instead of him departing on a free transfer in June.

Questioned

Wolves legend and former Dutch international John De Wolf questioned Boilesen's fitness, saying on Twitter: "I think he's a good player, but is he fit enough at the moment?"

Meanwhile, one of the many strikers on Wolves' list of potential Benik Afobe replacements appears to have ruled himself out of a move to Molineux.

Huddersfield forward Nahki Wells – who has scored 10 goals this season, and five in his last five appearances – has long been on Wolves' radar.

But he is quoted as saying in his native Bermuda: "I don't really want to speak about speculation because that's typical when you're doing well.

"I'm in good form right now and I know for a fact that I will be at Huddersfield come the end of the season."

n Wolves' trip to Middlesbrough has been brought forward a day to Friday, March 4 (7.45pm) for television coverage.
