Alf, who was born in Brewood, spent seven years on the books between 1942 and 1949 and later played at Wellington Town, now AFC Telford United.

He only made two appearances for Wolves, but one was in FA Cup semi-final replay against Manchester United during his final season.

The tie, at Everton's Goodison Park, was his debut which Wolves won 1-0 and he made his league debut in Division One four days later.

A goalless draw away against Liverpool at Anfield proved his swansong, with Wolves going on to Wembley to win the cup with a 3-1 win over Leicester City.

He was still living in Wolverhampton, based at Tettenhall with his wife Sheila, at the time of his death. Bill, who played 342 times for Wolves, died aged 84 in 2011.
