Wolves boss Kenny Jackett welcomes squad competition ahead of Bristol City clash

"We needed to be harder to beat and we needed to produce the goals. We got a good reaction on Saturday and we're going to need to continue that."

Boss Kenny Jackett has been acutely aware of where Wolves have been going wrong.

But one swallow does not a summer make, and Jackett has been keen to stress that Wolves still have an awful lot of work to do to get their season back on track.

With the additions of Mike Williamson and Grant Holt on loan, though, he does feel a lot happier about the options available to him.

"Competition is important," Jackett said ahead of tonight's trip to face Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

"There's many times you play three games in eight days or five in 15 and you need competition, different types and to cover injuries. The division can change very quickly in a short space of time.

"That's where we want to get to (a healthy squad). If we can get the likes of Ethan (Ebanks-Landell) and Kortney (Hause) back we'll be thinking we've got enough to start moving up the table.

"Our goals against column had hurt us too much. We try to play an attractive brand of football and that's there, but both boxes is where it counts. If you don't get that right you won't have the confidence to pass the ball.

Criticism has been levelled at Wolves this season for not having enough experience in their squad.

This time last week Jackett didn't have a player aged 30 or over at his disposal.

But the arrivals of Williamson and Holt changed all that.

Did Wolves make a concerted effort to add experience to their ranks?

"They (the two signings) came about in different circumstances," he said. "Mike's signing was borne out of injures.

"We've been looking at bringing in a big striker for a while, it just seemed to coincide with Mike.

"We have two recognised strikers and we needed a third. If that third one could be someone with some size and presence who could win a header we felt that would compliment everyone else."

Holt made a 10-minute debut cameo as a substitute for the 2-0 win over Blues at St Andrew's.

The 34-year-old hasn't started a game in 2015 owing to a serious knee injury, but has now made six substitute appearances this month with Wigan and Wolves.

And Jackett said Holt was 'fully fit and ready'.

"I wouldn't have any qualms starting him," he said.

"If you can dovetail a good group of strikers that's ideal, not just fresh legs but different types as well.

"Kevin Thelwell has been watching Grant for Wigan's under-21s and first team and we're pleased to add him. It's something we've been looking to do.

"Grant was keen to get out of League One into the Championship and see what he could do and be in the spotlight playing for Wolves.

"I was really pleased with Mike Williamson and what he did and what he brought to our team.

"He's wanted to come out and play games. He sees Wolves as a very good opportunity. He had a really good start and complimented the players that we have."

Wolves have an impressive recent record at Ashton Gate, going undefeated in their last six visits and recording big wins of 6-1, 5-1 and 4-1 along the way.

Despite the Robins' lowly league position, Jackett is taking nothing for granted.

"The football Bristol City play is very good," he said.

"I like the way they play, they've done very well as champions of League One and according to reports they've been unlucky in terms of performances against results.

"After that we just have to really concentrate on ourselves.

"We were in on Sunday morning and all we were talking about was Bristol City, how we've going to organise ourselves, the type of determination and quality we need to go and get a result.

"Every point in the Championship is hard earned and it will be again on Tuesday night."
