Benik Afobe says he is embracing his new 'number 10' role - and has hailed Kevin McDonald as the best midfielder in the Championship.

Afobe returned to goalscoring form at the weekend when he notched twice in the 3-0 win over Huddersfield.

It took his tally for the season to six in 12 games, after scoring 32 times in total for both Wolves and MK Dons in 2014/15.

And the 22-year-old is pleased with how things are going in his new position, despite admitting it is harder for him to score goals.

"To have scored six goals so far from that number ten position I am really proud of and it is a long season when hopefully I can score more goals," Afobe said

"It is a bit harder as I have been playing in a deeper position.

"Playing up top you get chances and you can run in behind but sometimes your team needs you to fill in as a third midfielder.

"That is what the gaffer wants me to do and it also gives me the chance to run at players from deep and try and create things.

"It is hard work but I am enjoying it and we have just won two games 3-0 so hopefully I can keep improving and the team can as well."

McDonald played a key role in both of Afobe's goals on Saturday, particularly for his second when the Scot found him with a perfect long-range pass.

With McDonald in form, Afobe said the pairs' 'telepathic' partnership had returned.

And the striker thinks there is no midfielder better in the Championship than McDonald.

"I think Kevin McDonald is the best midfielder in the league," he said,

"I have enjoyed playing with him over the last 10 months or so and we have a good connection off the pitch as well – he is one of my best mates here.

"He sees passes earlier than a lot of other players in this league and hopefully our telepathic partnership is back.

"Hopefully we can keep linking up together not just with me but with all the boys and keep making chances and scoring goals."

Norwich City had a £10m bid rejected for Afobe in the summer.

The international break has come at a bad time for a team in form.

But Afobe is keen for them to pick up where they left off.

"We're delighted with the last three games," he added.

"Before the week started we'd definitely have taken the seven points before the international break and so we are really pleased.

"Defensively we have kept two clean sheets in the last two games and scored some goals with different goalscorers so it is looking really good.

"It's like the international break has come at the wrong time for us but we can maybe rest up a bit and be ready for the next game at Derby.

"If we play well we would back ourselves against anyone in the league but it is a very difficult league where anyone can beat anyone on their day.

"It is about trying to find consistency and keep working hard as a team.

"It is on the telly as well and we will be trying to give a good show for the Wolves fans."
