The 26-year-old's future has been in doubt for months after he rejected Wolves' first contract offer amid strong interest from Championship rivals Fulham

He produced arguably his best performance of the season at Deepdale and said there were positives to take from the game.

The Scottish midfielder said: "I enjoyed the goal but it's obviously dropped points for us, we feel it was a great chance for us to pick up three points.

"There's a lot of positives to take from it. Fair play to Preston, they shut off all the gaps that me and Jack Price wanted to play through, they forced us to play the ball wide.

"And they defended for their lives, the two centre-halves and the goalkeeper were good. You've got to be clever to break them down and we only broke them down once.

"On another day, we could win 5-1 but it just wasn't meant to be."

McDonald rekindled his partnership with Price, with the pair having to sit on the sidelines in recent weeks before David Edwards picked up an injury and Conor Coady a three-match suspension.

He said of their partnership: "Last year we did well, and the year before, so it was nice to play alongside Pricey. We both went out there and put in a good performance, it's just unfortunate we didn't get the three points.

"Maybe we've just got a link, we know where each other will be at certain times, I can't really say, but whoever your partner is you're just happy to be in the team."

Wolves are nearer the relegation zone than the play-offs, but McDonald is convinced they were turn their poor form around. And he expressed his delight at finally signing that new contract.

He said: "It's been a long process getting it sorted but, thank god, in the end it's put to bed and we can move on from it.

"It's hard, it's obviously in the back of your mind, you want to get your future sorted. I told the manager from day one that I wanted to be at the club and that never changed.

"I'm the same as everyone here, we want to be up around the top of the league and we've got a lot of good players here.

"We're going through a sticky patch, but I'm sure we'll come out strong at the end of it."
