Championship rivals Fulham are due to sign the 28-year-old – who has been at Molineux for seven years – for £2million. Stearman was said to be deeply disappointed at Wolves accepting the offer.

Kenny Jackett – who until Saturday had selected Stearman for every league game in 2015 – said the decision to let Stearman leave was purely down to football reasons.

But he also suggested a replacement might not be signed before Tuesday's transfer window deadline, saying it would be 'difficult' to add to his squad in time.

Fans besieged Twitter and internet message boards to express their disappointment at the potential sale of the popular centre half.

Many turned their ire on chief executive Jez Moxey while others questioned the commitment of owner Steve Morgan.

Jackett admitted the transfer window and speculation around his players has unsettled his squad.

Rajiv van La Parra also appears to be on his way out after he was given permission to speak to Leeds United.

With Benik Afobe the subject of three bids from Norwich City, and Kevin McDonald and James Henry attracting bids and/or interest from Fulham and Charlton respectively, Jackett has conceded the speculation has had an affect.

"We do need the dressing room to settle down, definitely," Jackett said after Wolves beat Charlton 2-1 to record their second league victory of the season. We need to get things straight and to get things sorted out because there is a lot of the season left.

Benik Afobe of Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrates after scoring a goal to make it 1-1 with Richard Stearman.

"I do think it has an affect.

"There has been a lot made of this window going past the start of the season by many people in football, and it has been quite a talking point. Whether there will be any adjustments made I don't know but it has certainly affected our club."

Jackett said: "It is a football decision."

But he added: "He has done very well here and done very well for me personally.

"I didn't feel the mix was right necessarily in the early days of this season and we have to make some big decisions."
