The midfielder is still without a new deal and talks have stalled, leaving the Scot's future undecided.

However the 26-year-old – who missed a pre-season friendly at Burton due to being 'unsettled' – said football had 'taken over'. McDonald said: "It's in the past now, there's nothing really happening, it's one of those things you've got to get on with.

"It's on the back burner and football has taken over which is the main thing."

A contract offer remains on the table, but the two parties are some way off an agreement.

McDonald, who attracted two bids from Fulham earlier in the summer, said he was enjoying his football in what is a new midfield system utilised by Jackett this season.

"The new formation is good, it's like a diamond, and also a kind of 'go where you want' in a way," he said. "You've got a lot more freedom and when we get the ball down and play it's hard for teams to defend."

And of new midfield partner Conor Coady, McDonald added: "I played with him at Sheffield United and I knew what he was like – he brings hard work and a battling side to the team. His ability on the ball goes unnoticed at times I think, he's got quality and he'll be a great signing for us."

Jackett praised McDonald for his commitment to the club and his early-season performances.

The head coach said:

"As far as I'm aware the contract is still on the table but there's been no movement.

"But in the meantime he's been really professional, I think he's played very well, showed a good commitment to the club and the other players, and individually played well himself which ultimately, if he keeps doing that, things will work out for him. He wants to stay
