Scott Golbourne aims for new Wolves deal

Wolves defender Scott Golbourne has set his sights on earning a new contract - and revealed that injury restricted him to performing at 80 per cent last season.

Left-back Golbourne was one of the stars of the League One title side of 2013-14, playing 50 games in all competitions and delivering a string of consistent performances.

Last season was a different story with Golbourne struggling for form and fitness and making 27 appearances, with centre-half Kortney Hause often preferred at left back.

Golbourne was dogged by a persistent foot injury for the duration of the campaign. But he has come back flying in pre-season, featuring in all six matches, and reckons he'll be back to his best as Wolves push for promotion.

The 27-year-old told the Express & Star: "I'm feeling really good. Last season was frustrating, the injury was something I was playing with pretty much all season.

"I could get through but it did stop me being at my best. I was playing possibly at 80 per cent. I was just trying to get through games and not really get the maximum out of myself.

"This year it'll be different - I'm excited to get back to my best. I'll probably reduce levels of training outside at times and do a bit more in the gym to manage that.

"I'm confident I can be available for every game - that's the aim."

Golbourne, who moved to Molineux from Barnsley in August 2013, is out of contract at the end of the season.

He is by no means the only one, with Kevin McDonald, David Edwards, James Henry, Tommy Rowe and Matt Doherty among a host of players whose deals are due to expire.

And Golbourne is focused on extending his Molineux stay, saying: "It's a case of seeing how it goes.

"There are a few in the same situation but that's always the aim, you want to improve and earn new contracts and develop."

"That's part and parcel of the journey, I'm definitely looking to do that. Staying fit, performing well and training well, the rest of that falls into place.

"It's definitely something I'll be looking to push for."

Obviously, that now won't be the case, but the left-back is confident his game won't change regardless of who is playing in front of him.

He said: "It's a team game but it's about partnerships - if you can develop those and strengthen those and get that real understanding it definitely helps.

"I actually enjoy either (playing with a winger or a narrow midfielder), my game doesn't really change either way.

"I'd still look to play the length of the pitch, try and impose myself on the game and have an effect defensively and when attacking."
