The departures of Kevin Doyle, Sam Ricketts and Tomasz Kuszczak have suddenly made Shrewsbury-born Edwards a veteran in Wolves terms.

Boss Kenny Jackett has long extolled the virtues of youth and vitality in his squad and seems to be taking that to new extremes with Wolves' average age rapidly decreasing.

And Edwards, who recently stated his desire to extend a contract that runs out next summer, welcomed his new situation.

"I'm the oldest player in the squad at 29, which seems bizarre – but I do enjoy it, I relish that role," he said.

"I'm maturing as a player and I feel my best years will be the next three or four of my career.

"Even though I missed a bit of football where I was perhaps only playing 15-20 games a season through injuries and selection, I've played over 400 games now.

"I feel like those years will prolong my career. I've found a formula that keeps me fit and I'm being professional in terms of how I handle myself off the pitch.

"It's a huge club and if I'm considered one of the leaders it's amazing for me."

Edwards wore the captain's armband during Wolves' recent friendly victory over FC Chambly in France. And he backed the club to get it right in the transfer market this summer as Wolves look to mount a Premier League promotion push.

He said: "I've worn the armband once before – it was against Chelsea and we lost 6-0 in the League Cup!

"It was good to wear it when we won this time. It's a privilege to wear the captain's armband for Wolves and it was a special moment even if it was a friendly.

"Wolves haven't got many signings wrong over the past couple of years."

Wolves target Johann Gudmundsson – dubbed the Icelandic Beckham – has signed a new four-year contract at Charlton.
