Kenny Jackett: Dave Edwards can fill Bakary Sako void

Kenny Jackett has backed David Edwards to fill the goalscoring void left by Bakary Sako - as the midfielder pledged his future to Wolves.

Edwards has a year left on his existing deal but it seems likely he will extend this and head towards 10 years at the club, having joined in 2008.

With Sako's exit Wolves lose a major goal threat, with the Mali international having netted 38 times in three years at Wolves.

However Jackett said Edwards, who scored eight in all competitions last year, could be the man to step up to the plate in Sako's wake.

"If we're talking about replacing Sako's goals, giving Edwards a position or a role where he can break from midfield and get goals is something he's capable of," Jackett said.

"Under the right circumstances, given the right position, could he make that up and get into double figures? Yes, I think he could.

"Dave is a player that has a year left but he's happy and comfortable at the club, definitely.

"He's not a player that we're looking to move on or make transfer requests, he's somebody who's settled at the club and we hope that continues."

With the departures of Tomasz Kuszczak and Sam Ricketts, Edwards is now the oldest player in the Wolves squad, aged 29.

And he has no desire to leave a club he said it had been a 'real privilege' to play for since joining from LutonTown seven years ago.

"Every single year I'm here I feel really blessed to be part of such a huge club," he said.

"I know when I finish football it's something I'll look back on with great pride and the more time I can spend here the better.

"I've no interest in moving on - I'm happy to commit my future.

"With the fans I've gone through the same rollercoaster as they have over the past six or seven years.

"I'd like to think I'm at the best point in my career in terms of physically and also relationship-wise with the fans.

"I feel my best years are ahead of me."
