Webber has departed for fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town to take up a role as director of football operations, an effective promotion from his Wolves position.

Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed a search for his replacement was under way.

And they will want to act quickly to find a successor in good time for the new season.

Webber joined Wolves from QPR – where he had been one of three chief scouts – in January 2013.

He had previously been director of recruitment at Liverpool and was involved in signing Raheem Sterling.

Webber had worked closely with Wolves' head of football development and recruitment Kevin Thelwell.

In the past two years he played a key role in the club's largely-successful transfer dealings, with the likes of Benik Abobe, Nouha Dicko, Kevin McDonald and James Henry becoming instant hits at Molineux.

Moxey said of his departure: "Stuart has decided to take up a position at Huddersfield which, as director of football operations, amounts to a step up from his current role at Wolves.

"We wish him all the best and thank him for his efforts with us over the last two-and-a-half years.

"We will now begin the search for a successor to Stuart to develop and improve on the good work of the recruitment department."

Webber said the new position at Huddersfield was one he couldn't turn down.

He added: "I have really enjoyed my two-and-a-half years at the club working alongside Jez, Kevin Thelwell and Kenny (Jackett).

"I wish everyone at the club all the best and hope they can continue the excellent progress made over the last two seasons."

Webber helped revamp Wolves' scouting network with the aim of producing a regular crop of first-team players who have come through via the under-21 team.

One example was Kortney Hause, who was watched by Wolves for a year before being snapped up in January 2014.
