Wolves finished seventh after being squeezed out of the top six on goal difference on the final day by Ipswich Town, their total of 78 points the highest at Championship level to miss the play-offs.

Boss Kenny Jackett is determined to lead Wolves into the Premier League and McDonald, who was the club's only ever present in 2014-15, is convinced further improvement is within their capabilities.

The Scottish playmaker said: "We know we can improve that extra 10 per cent and who knows where that could take us?

"It will be a hard league again but, with everything in that dressing room, we'll give it a good shot.

"We've come a long way and next season is a big year for us. This season has to be used as a motivation."

McDonald believes Wolves should be proud of how far they have come, after being in League One when Jackett took over in June 2013.

He said: "When you look at where the club was two years ago, and to think we've finished seventh and missed out on the play-offs on goal difference, we'd have been more than happy with that.

"We have to be proud of the work we've put in over the last couple of seasons."

McDonald believes Wolves will be better equipped to challenge next time after adjusting to the second tier.

He said: "We showed we can adapt our game to the Championship. When we went through a tough patch teams were trying to stop us playing and it was hard to adjust, especially in November.

"But we showed some really good form in the second half of the season."
