Afobe timing is just right, says Wolves boss Kenny Jackett

Kenny Jackett believes Wolves' timing to buy £2m hitman Benik Afobe was spot-on.

Loanees Yannick Sagbo and Danny Graham had limited impact prior to Afobe's arrival in January.

Afobe, who celebrated his 100th League appearance with his sixth goal in 10 games for Wolves in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth, is still fresh after being used sparingly by MK Dons on loan.

The 22-year-old scored his 10 league goals for Karl Robinson's side in just 11 starts, with a further 11 appearances coming off the bench.

And Jackett reckons Wolves are reaping the benefits of signing Afobe when they did.

"His number of goals for MK Dons were high but his number of starts was quite low – he was substitute mainly in the first half of the season," said Jackett.

"I don't know whether we're reaping the rewards from that – he didn't play much or in many games in the first half of the season so he has a lot of energy.

"So it was right for him and MK Dons were successful in that period with Benik coming off the bench.

"Bringing him in at that particular time, it's been a good move and it's worked well for us."

Jackett had Afobe at Millwall but his loan was cut short by a cruciate knee ligament injury.

"We were waiting and watching to see how he got over the injury, so I do feel we stepped in at the right time with Benik and hopefully now he can go from strength to strength," said the boss.

"You can always say 'if we'd have signed x, y and z in August it would have been fine' but that's all hindsight."
