Wolves' Dominic Iorfa has Premier League potential

Dominic Iorfa was today told he is the latest Wolves starlet to show Premier League potential.

The 19-year-old defender was named Football League Young Player of the Month for February after a solid emergence at right back in Kenny Jackett's side.

Iorfa is the current pick in what is the most competitive spot in the team, ahead of the more experienced Matt Doherty, Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Sam Ricketts, and even has a fans' song dedicated to him, The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army.

And assistant head coach Joe Gallen believes the towering 6ft 5ins prospect has the credentials to make it in the top flight, like Benik Afobe.

"We played a behind-closed doors game at QPR earlier in the season, and they had a first team playing," said Gallen.

"Junior Hoillett played on the left and the Korean player Yun Suk-Young at left-back and they couldn't stop Dominic.

"And these guys were trying their best. Shaun Wright-Phillips, Sandro and Matt Phillips played but Dominic was just unstoppable.

"Matt Doherty is very good and it's good to have healthy competition. ppBut I remember saying to Ken (head coach Kenny Jackett), 'he's ready to play' and it's proved that way.

"So for him to get the young player award, I was quite pleased because I was thinking back then he could really play."

Iorfa started as a centre half but has played all his senior football on the right, starting with in a loan spell as a right wing back at Shrewsbury Town last season.

And Gallen believes he can be a career full back.

"With his athleticism and pace it would be a shame for him to play at centre-back," said the Wolves number two.

"All the best to those trying to out-sprint him and get behind him.

"With his acceleration and athleticism it lends him to being a right-back that can get forwards."

Gallen believes Iorfa has everything defensively but needs to work on the attacking side of his game.

"In the first 20 minutes on Saturday, it was up to him to make the final cross and the final decision," said Gallen.

"We'd all say he wasn't quite up to scratch at that moment, but in 30-40 games he will be.

"His defending is excellent - I don't think anyone has got past him one-on-one, and he's been involved in creating chances and we've scored goals off his assists.

"He's got an awful lot in his locker."
