Wolves today revealed they have taken Iceland midfielder Gudmundur Thorarinsson on trial from under the noses of rivals Millwall.

The Lions were hopeful of landing Thorarinsson after holding talks with him this week, even showing him around their training ground.

But the 22-year-old, who last served Norwegian club Sarpsborg, has joined up with Wolves after discussions with boss Kenny Jackett.

Millwall manager Ian Holloway already conceded that Thorarinsson's visit to the club would not materialise into the transfer they planned.

And that opens the door for Wolves, their Championship rivals who can also offer the player the standard of football that he's looking for.

Jackett today admitted Thorarinsson is spending time with the club on trial, although he stressed no call has been made about him signing.

The Wolves head coach said: "He has trained with our under-21s on Tuesday and today. No decision has been made yet. He is a free agent so there's no rush. It might go on into next week.

"We are always open in terms of trialists, as most clubs would be. If there are free agents out there, we will look at them. We generally do try to look at younger players if we can.

"With the different leagues playing at different times, with summer football, they can be available for trial around this time when their season is finished."

Thorarinsson has been long aware of interest from the Championship and is hoping to find a club with the best possible chance of reaching the Premier League.

He said: "Playing in the Championship would be a good opportunity. Gylfi Sigurdsson is a good example of that, when he played for Reading.

"The main thing is to find a team that suits me and my style. I was a little skeptical when I heard of interest from Championship clubs, but you can see that this is a strong division.

"I've been playing almost every game for Sarpsborg in the last two seasons and I feel ready to take the next step."

Thorarinsson turned out for Selfoss and IBV in his homeland before moving to Sarpsborg in 2013, winning his first Iceland cap earlier this year.
