Wolves were today trying to push through at least one more forward loan signing – as the Ivan Toney deal hung in the balance.

Boss Kenny Jackett has other un-named attack-minded targets he wants to bring in before today's 5pm loan deadline, in addition to Toney. Rumours circulated last night that Northampton had pulled out of a £500,000 deal in the belief that they could attract a bigger fee in January.

The 18-year-old striker underwent a two-day medical at Compton Park, and Toney and his agent were still at the Wolves training ground yesterday afternoon, waiting for the deal to go through.

A scheduled board meeting was held at Molineux earlier in the day where it's understood there was no hint of a snag at the time. As Wolves waited on two attack-minded signings, Leon Clarke seemed set for his farewell.

It's understood the 30-year-old striker, who cost £750,000 last January but is out of contract in the summer, has the choice of two League One clubs on loan.

Wolves are also working on concluding deals for unwanted defenders Roger Johnson and Kevin Foley to free up their wage bill. Their destinations are unknown, but Blackpool, who lost on-loan Hull full-back Brian Lenihan yesterday and have regular right-back Tony McMahon suspended for the weekend, were interested in taking Foley back recently.

As for the incomings, Jackett said: "Whether it's within the club or someone from the outside, we're working on it. We're looking at the squads and the teams.

"If it comes from the outside, us having that kind of flexibility is key and is going to be important for us."

Jackett is looking to vary his forward line in personnel and formation.

"I think you need an option," he said. "I'm not suddenly going to go in a different direction but I do think that to win games consistently in the Championship you need to be variable in your approach."

Ideally, Jackett wants a strike partner for Danny Graham.

"I think he can score but maybe at times - and right the way through - he might need a partner," he added.
