Stuart, who died yesterday at the age of 83, was part of the Wolves team which won three league titles over the course of the decade, while he also earned an FA Cup winner's medal in 1960 with the win over Blackburn.

And Bill Slater, who played alongside Stuart in those triumphs, claims his contribution to the team effort cannot be ignored.

"He was a key player of that great side," said Slater.

"When you think of all the players that brought the club all that success in the 1950s, he was one of them.

"He was a regular in that side and was very worthy of his place."

Stuart signed for Wolves in 1951, aged just 19, having begun his career in his native South Africa with Johannesburg Rangers.

Tributes have poured in since news of his death broke yesterday.

Another former team-mate, Malcolm Finlayson, said: "He could tackle well and had two good feet as well – he was a wonderful player.

"He was confident and powerful in a defence with Billy Wright, Ron Flowers, Bill Slater and Eddie Clamp.

"Players like powerful players in their team and Eddie was a popular member of the team.

"He was well thought of by everyone."

Mike Bailey, president of Wolves' Former Players' Association, said Stuart would be sadly missed.

"It's always such a tragedy when former players pass away, it's a feeling that is hard to take," admitted Bailey.

"He was a really lovely guy, I'll remember that."
