The 29-year-old from Cannock competed in the men's hand bike time trial, IHB2 class, at the Invictus Games at the Olympic Park in London last month, finishing fourth in what was his first competitive race.

Smith, who has recently been discharged from the Army after a lengthy rehabilitation process, lost both legs serving in Afghanistan in 2010 serving as a sapper in the 33 Engineer Regiment.

"It was absolutely brilliant to compete in the Games," said Smith, who added he would put the £250,000 Sky Bet transfer fund towards buying Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes for Wolves if he won the prize.

"It was such a strong field and I was a bit disappointed to just miss out on the top three. But the experience of being there and competing was unbelievable.

"It's an honour to win fan of the month – thousands of supporters travel up and down the country, week-in week-out, so to win it is brilliant."

Smith was last year's face of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, and delivered the match-ball for the Wolves v Stevenage game last season and the Brighton home game the year before.

Wolves midfielder Tommy Rowe said: "It was great to meet Clive and congratulate him on becoming the Championship fan of the month.

"I was at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games, and it was a privilege to see all the former servicemen and women, who have overcome so many challenges, compete against each other.

"Clive told me it was four years to the day since he suffered such devastating injuries, and yet he has somehow managed to turn that into a positive.

"It is difficult to imagine there will be a more deserving winner of the award throughout the season."
