Edwards headed Kenny Jackett's side into a 30th-minute lead on Saturday from Rajiv Van La Parra's cross.

Wolves eventually had to settle for a point via Bakary Sako's equaliser after James Perch and Marc-Antoine Fortune put the Latics ahead.

But for Edwards, whose grandad Charlie was an avid fan of their hometown club Shrewsbury Town, it was an emotional moment.

The midfielder said: "My grandad Charlie passed away recently and my mum Kim is an only child.

"My nan died 20 years ago so it's only been and her dad on that side of the family for all that time.

"I used to see him all the time and it wasn't expected so it was a shock and my mom, my brother and my sister have all been upset.

"It's his funeral on Thursday and it was nice to have the goal to dedicate to him. I knew I was going to score – I really do believe that and it was as if someone was looking over me.

"So it was nice to get a goal for him and my mom. He was 86 and he suffered heart failure.

"It was only his birthday the weekend before and we all went out for a meal, so he got to see my mum, the grandkids and all the great grandkids as well.

"I thought he might have had a few more years left, so it was a bit of a shock.

"It happened on the Tuesday night – he was a massive Shrewsbury fan and he was listening to the wireless so it might have been the shock of beating Norwich that night – that's what we like to think anyway!

"He always followed me and asked how I was getting on but he'd listen to Radio Shropshire on a Saturday afternoon instead of Radio West Midlands, so that says it all."

Meanwhile, Edwards insists there is confidence in the defence. Richard Stearman was at fault for both goals on Saturday.

But Edwards said: "Yes, of course, we have the confidence in them, but it's a collective effort.

"Myself and Nouha (Dicko) know we're the first line of defence and it's important we put pressure on the opposition defence so they don't put an easy ball into the strikers.

"The defence has been great this season but defending is a team effort and I'm sure we'll get back to keeping clean sheets."
