Irvine is without a win in four games in charge with supporters booing his side after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to the Toffees.

And Irvine admitted he cannot rely on patience as he looks to make his mark at the Hawthorns.

"You can't throw a team together overnight, especially when we've had the number of outs and then ins that we have had," said Irvine, who is trying to integrate 11 new signings.

"But I also understand that you can't lose games too often, and that if you do, then that becomes extremely difficult.

"It's difficult for me to ask for patience. Other people will decide whether they're going to patient or not.

"I'll just keep on working away as hard as I do and try and get the lads gelled into the best team that we can be as quickly as possible."

Irvine hopes to have Stephane Sessegnon available for Sunday's trip to Tottenham after the former record signing was ruled out by doctors on Saturday.

And Irvine insisted Joleon Lescott was available to face Everton despite not figuring in the matchday squad.

"On Tuesday 'Sess' got a ball that hit him in the eye and he complained a little bit about it on Thursday but trained, so as far as I was concerned everything was fine," said Irvine.

"He was very much in our thoughts for playing but as a precaution he went to have an assessment by an eye specialist, and we were told that he had blood in his eye and that it was a risk to play because if he got another blow to the eye then it could be something serious.

"The decision was taken out of my hands because obviously you can't risk somebody's sight. So we lost him on Friday and Boaz Myhill, who had a bit of a bang on the knee.

"I would think that 'Sess' would probably be OK for next week."
