Wolves sign up trial defender George Swan

Wolves today announced the signing of former Manchester City defender George Swan.

The 19-year-old centre-back and son of former Leeds, Hull City and Port Vale central defender Peter, has signed a deal until January after impressing on trial.

The 6ft-plus tall youngster, who turns 20 on Friday, is bidding to rescue a promising career that has suffered through a string of serious injuries.

He came to Wolves on the recommendation of Under-21s coach Scott Sellars, who watched him come through the ranks at City, where he had been Under-18s captain.

And the big Wakefield youngster has already made an impression, scoring the only goal in the Under-21s' 1-0 win over Bolton after making his debut in the 2-1 defeat at Albion.

"George Swan has accepted a contract until the end of the Christmas period," said head coach Kenny Jackett. "He's had a lot of injuries in a young career so far but looks a good player at Under-21 level.

"We want to give him that platform now to get over those injuries, which have been extensive, and see if he can show the potential he showed previously.

"We're giving him a window-to-window opportunity where we can work really hard with him to stay fit and play, and try to build up his overall fitness to do justice to his considerable amount of talent."

Swan, who cost City £800,000 in compensation with fellow youngster Louis Hutton in 2009, has had his fair share of injuries.

"He's had a cruciate knee ligament operation, a lateral knee ligament operation, a broken leg and an impingement in his hip," said Jackett.

"The impingement was at 15 or 16 where his movement was being restricted and I think they shave off a part or re-align a part, so the movement is then smooth.

"But he's young enough to come through that and has been here a number of weeks and Scott knows him well. He wants to get on the ball and is good in both boxes."

In 2013, Swan was marked out as 'one to watch' in a video feature by City's official website.

Swan joined City at 14 from Leeds but returned to Elland Road in the summer on trial, following his release from the Etihad Stadium.

He has had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday last season and Stromsgodset in Norway, but hasn't played first-team football.
