Jacobs comes across his boyhood outfit for the first time, in a reverse fixture from the two teams' first round meeting in 2012, writes Craig Birch.

He was part of the Cobblers side that stunned Liverpool at Anfield in the 2010-11 competition, winning a penalty shoot out after a 2-2 draw.

It was Jacobs' who netted the second goal in the first-half of extra time, David Ngog temporarily saving Liverpool's blushes with four minutes left.

Billy McKay had cancelled out Milan Jovanovic's opener for the Premier League giants, with the game finally decided on spot kicks.

Third up, Jacobs' netted his before Liverpool's Nathan Eccleston missed, Abdul Osman converting to finish the tie at 4-2 and leave the Kopites red-faced on their own ground.

Michael Jacobs wheels away to celebrate after putting Northampton ahead at Liverpool in September 2010.

Jacobs recalled: "It was a fantastic achievement and we'd already had a good run. We beat Brighton in the first round and then we got Liverpool at Anfield.

"Even though they played a bit of a reserve team, it was a massive occasion for everybody involved with Northampton and we took a good following.

"The whole experience was brilliant, right from when we lined up and they were singing You'll Never Walk Alone. I am a bit of a Liverpool fan, so it was a great night for me.

"I was more worried about my boots, I had only taken a pair of moulded ones and it rained all night. It kept playing on my mind that I could slip over!

"Then we managed to get an unbelievable result and I scored the second goal. I just managed to shin it in really and it came off the far post.

"I didn't really know what to do, I hadn't thought of a celebration. It was the same with the penalty in the shoot out, but it was nice to put that away."

Jacobs is embraced by team-mate Steve Guinan after his strike stunned the home supporters at a rain-drenched Anfield.

Now Jacobs is striving not to be embarrassed by Chris Wilder's League Two side at Molineux tonight, Wolves beating them 3-1 at the Sixfields Stadium in their last cup meeting.

The Kettering-born 22-year-old is looking forward to catching up with old friends, though, from the club where he became a centurion and was Player of the Season for his last two years.

He said: "It will be nice to see a few old faces, Northampton gave me the opportunity to start playing. I came through the Centre of Excellence and youth system.

"I spent a lot of years there, made my first-team debut for them and I went to make 100 appearances for them over a couple of seasons, winning the Player of the Season award.

"They will always have a place in my heart, I keep an eye out for their results and I have been watching them since I was a little kid.

"I am from Kettering, they were the biggest team close to home and I always going to home games. It's a good club.

"It should be a good game, I am expecting them to pick up in League Two this season after a tough couple of years, with a new manager and a new group of players."

Jacobs left Northampton for Derby in 2012, a fee of around £400,000 decided by a tribunal, as the player was out-of-contract but under 24.

He was never a permanent fixture for the Rams, though, and was shipped out to star for Wolves during a loan spell in last season's League One title-winning side.

With promotion firmly on the agenda, he made the move permanent in January, strongly of the opinion it wouldn't be long before he was back in the second tier.

But he was left out for the starting line-up for the first time in Sunday's Championship opener, a 1-0 win at home to Norwich City, appearing for the last nine minutes as a substitute.

He said: "I let my contract run down and signed for Derby but it didn't work out as I would have wanted there, even though I got some experience playing in the Championship.

"It's my next aim to do that regularly with Wolves, it's nice to be back at this level and I want to kick on.

"I had played in every game since I signed before Sunday, so it was a bit disappointing not to play, but we have a strong squad and players are fighting for places.

"I was itching to get out there, so it was nice to get on for a few minutes before the end and it was a good win for us. Hopefully, I will get another chance tonight."

Jacobs is targeting a place in the middle of the park, which might be just as well considering Wolves' options out wide.

Wingers Bakary Sako and debutant Rajiv van Parra, who set up Dave Edwards' winner, impressed against Norwich and gave cause for optimism.

Jacobs said: "I see myself as a central midfielder, although I can do a job out wide as well. That said, our wingers did a great job on Sunday.

"Rajiv produced a really good performance and he's looked sharp since he has come in. He's young and hungry and wants to beat players, that's his game.

"He looked a real threat and it's good to see him do well. I think he will have a great chance here, if he keeps working hard.

"You almost know that he's going to be beating his man and putting a good ball into the box which, as a central player, is what you want."

After a winning return to the Championship against a team relegated from the Premier League, some Wolves fans are daring to dream of a return to the top flight.

And Jacobs said: "With the squad we have got and the standards we are setting ourselves, I think we have got a great chance of being right up there.

"If we start well and keep up our momentum, with the fans getting right behind us, this will be a good place to be. A nice cup run wouldn't do us any harm, either!"
