Barnsley on brink of landing David Davis on loan

David Davis was today closing in on a loan exit from Wolves – with Barnsley his likely destination.

The out-of-favour midfielder was pulled out of last night's Under-21s friendly away to Telford as talks continued on the terms of his departure.

Several clubs have expressed an interest in the 23-year-old, but the Tykes, who were relegated to League One last season, are the frontrunners for his signature.

"There is and has been some interest in him," said head coach Kenny Jackett.

"Barnsley are the strong contenders after expressing an interest in Dave and they've been talking to Kevin Thelwell.

"It's ongoing, clubs are talking to us but nothing has been agreed as yet. Possibly it would be a loan until Christmas. He trained with us on Monday and we were expecting him to play last night at Telford. But as it stands at the moment there is nothing agreed."

Davis, who is into the final year of his contract, would become the second academy graduate to leave Molineux on loan this summer after winger Zeli Ismail joined League One Notts County until Christmas last week.

Jake Cassidy, Anthony Forde and Liam McAlinden are set to follow them out of the door in temporary moves, but in the latter's case, only if Wolves sign another striker.

Davis has become surplus to requirements at Molineux after the signing of Kevin McDonald last August and subsequently the form of two players who are younger than him, Lee Evans and Jack Price.

They kept the 23-year-old out of the side for the majority of the season when he lost his place in September.

Earlier this summer, Jackett had indicated Davis would be handed a fresh chance to prove himself.

But with clubs showing an interest in him, he wasn't part of the squad that travelled to Ireland and 18-year-old academy player Declan Weeks joined the party instead when Tommy Rowe was injured.

Davis is no stranger to loan moves, having had spells at Darlington, Shrewsbury, Walsall, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Chesterfield.
