Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards was today given a licence to thrill after being told he will only play in an advanced role from now on.

The Wales international has previously been used in a variety of midfield positions, including wide on the right.

However, head coach Kenny Jackett today set out his plan for the 28-year-old.

"Although he's down as a midfield player I don't think Dave Edwards is a 4-4-2 player," he said.

"In central midfield I think him doing that donkey work and not being able to get forward limits him.

"I don't think he's a wide right player and he's not an out-and-out forward.

"So, as a third midfield player, behind the striker – whatever term it is – he's very good at being in the centre of the pitch breaking forward and getting into the box, and he can finish. That's where I want to play him."

Jackett believes Edwards can be a real goal-threat in the Championship, as long as the shackles are off.

"I think as an attacking midfield player he can score goals – if we'd brought a centre forward in at that time that got nine goals in 20 games it would have been a crucial signing," added the boss.

"He came back in and got some key goals and I don't really see his role changing. Dave Edwards is a good, all-round player with the major strength of being able to get forward and score goals.

"While he can play in the centre I wouldn't want to limit him in doing that. He's somebody I want to put in a role when he can arrive in the box.

"At the end of the season he got nine goals in 20 games and has scored goals in the Championship and the Premier League before."

Meanwhile, Wolves' match at Huddersfield, which was due to be played on Tuesday, September 30, will now be played on Wednesday, October 1 at 7.45pm.

And former Wolves left-back George Elokobi played for Leyton Orient on trial in their 3-2 win over Dartford at the weekend.
