Davis was the surprise omission from the 24-man squad who travelled to Dublin for the club's pre-season tour yesterday afternoon.

Barnsley, who were relegated from the Championship last season, are set to open talks with him if they can agree a fee for the 23-year-old.

Head coach Kenny Jackett said: "David has stayed behind ,because we don't want to risk anything as one or two clubs are showing an interest in him.

"Something could develop today or tomorrow, so we didn't want to risk bringing him out here if we had to send him back."

Davis was left out of the squad that played at Cheltenham on Friday night and instead trained with the under-21s and Jake Cassidy, Zeli Ismail and Anthony Forde at the weekend.

The 23-year-old ball-winner has slipped below younger players Lee Evans and Jack Price in the midfield pecking order.

He now finds himself needing a move to kick-start a career that shined brightly when he made his entrance on the Premier League stage in 2011-12.

But after starting last season in the team, he lost his place in the autumn.

Wolves were again linked with Middlesbrough striker Lukas Jutkiewciwz at the weekend, when the 25-year-old had been set for a move to Burnley.
