Mick McCarthy today greeted Wolves' return to the Championship by tipping his old club to be a "threat" next season.

The former Molineux boss, who signed a new three-year deal as Ipswich manager yesterday, believes the momentum generated by last season's record-breaking League One title success will stand Kenny Jackett's side in good stead as they prepare for a return to the second tier.

"It won't be any easier," said McCarthy, who has finished 14th and ninth in his two seasons at Portman Road after leaving Wolves in February 2012 after nearly six years in charge.

"I see Wolves as a threat as they totalled over 100 points and he (Jackett) has put a good, young team together.

"He's re-signed 'Stears' (Richard Stearman) as a bit of experience in the team, but they're a big club with big support and they will be a threat."

McCarthy, whose long-term assistant from Wolves Terry Connor has also penned a deal for the same period, also rates fellow League One promoted side Rotherham and the three relegated teams, Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff.

"Rotherham came up with Wolves and I thought they were a good side last season and they've spent a few quid," he said.

"The lads coming down from Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff will all have good squads, depending on what they lose, and will be in a position to buy, so it's going to be hard."
