Wolves must act quickly to catch Newcastle United ace Conor Newton

Wolves were today urged to act quickly if they want to secure the signing of Newcastle midfielder Conor Newton.

The 22-year-old Geordie, who has negotiated a free transfer from the Magpies to secure first-team football elsewhere, has received offers from two un-named Championship clubs in the last two days.

Newton, who has been tracked by Wolves since before Kenny Jackett was appointed head coach almost a year ago, has been watched by a host of scouts from English clubs in the last two games of the SPL season, where he has been on loan with St Mirren since January 2013.

Wolves were among those in attendance at Kilmarnock last Wednesday to watch him in St Mirren’s 1-0 away defeat, along with representatives from Bolton, Wigan and Blackburn.

On Saturday, it’s understood Wolves were joined by Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Rotherham in the crowd for a 1-1 home draw against Hearts.

Molineux head coach Kenny Jackett, who was summarising for TV at Leyton Orient’s winning play-off semi-final second leg against Peterborough last night after attending Preston’s 1-1 draw against Rotherham on Saturday, wants more competition for the attacking central midfield role that out-of-contract Dave Edwards impressed in during the last third of the season.

Box-to-box player Newton fits the bill with his running statistics at Newcastle said to be matched only by Yohan Cabaye.

And despite plenty of rival interest, he is said to be keen on a switch to Wolves, although Jackett has other targets too.

A source close to Newton said: “There’s lots of Championship interest in Conor, as well as teams looking to go up to the Championship, and the interest is coming in quite quickly.

“Wolves’ interest is pretty serious – they’ve been to watch him quite a few times and have been tracking him for a while.

“But Wolves have been in for him before on loan before he went back to St Mirren and I think he’d be keen on joining them.”

Newton said: “I’ve decided to move on from Newcastle when my contract expires.

“I’ve played 60 games for St Mirren and I’ve got to continue playing now on a regular basis.

“I’m thankful to Newcastle for letting me leave on a free and I’m grateful to Alan Pardew and all the coaching staff at Newcastle.

“But I just feel I need to leave so I can continue my own career.”

-Should Wolves "Miss Out" after an attacking mid-fielder, one begins to wonder if they have noticed that Barnsley have "releaased" such a player we had on loan until he broke his leg. FRIMPONG. Either they cannot afford him now they have dropped down a division or he is not now as good as before.

Arsenal let him go.

Burnley let him go.

Burnley barely played him, he got a couple of red cards and they were not happy with his attitude.

Has a lot to say for himself, but doesn't seem to stick around anywhere long.

The new Leon Clarke?

I dared to critisize Leon Clarke a couple of days ago.............wait for the abuse pal!

'Nuff said.

That's the quickest U Turn I think I've ever witnessed Paulo !!

Seriously? Frimpong?!

He was released by Barnsley because he's injury-prone and his attitude stinks. He had a couple of good games for us and for some reason our idiotic fans have this love affair with him.

Also, he's a defensive midfielder! Would not touch him with a barge pole and I'm pretty sure Kenny feels the same way.

Ace? What adjectives will you require for a Premier League journeyman?

old golds worth more

Deuce maybe? But I agree, Newcastle are hardly likely to let an Ace go on a free transfer, especially one that young.

I am fully aware that E&S reporters have to produce their daily quotas, in order to fill pages for their readership, BUT----this is NOT Wolves coming in for a player. It is pure E&S speculative conjecture. Where does K.J. actually even refer to Conor Newton? The only comments made are by "a source close to Newton", just about the oldest news rag trick in the book.--------- Come on E&S, give us something really newsworthy. Or better still, leave the back page blank with the little comment, "nothing really important to report".----------Perhaps you could even use the space to discuss/debate more relevant football issues. Anything rather than this fatuous drivel!!

Pembrokeshire Wolf

I think we all know that, unlike the previous few years, we have a management structure in place that will handle these situations more decisively. I'm sure that, if this guy is good enough, Kenny will know what to do. After what he's achieved, it's very much a case of "In Kenny we trust".

Sounds good!!

However can we please refrain from stats such as he runs as much as Yohan Cabaye!!! Yeah and Yohan Cabaye has an end product and is playing in a World Cup!!! Wasn't supposed to be dampener.

I reckon it will be an exciting transfer window at the molineux though :) We will sign and sell and I hope we build on this season.

Do we want people who will succeed in the Championship but not the Premier League? If he was not successful in Newcastle because of his age and inexperience, that is one thing but if he does not have the talent, maybe they should be looking for players with more potential overseas.

Jack the Hat

Go get, but no rush as I can't see too many clubs going in for him. Looks as though he has had a haircut to get his hat over his cranium.

Haha could say the same for you getting a manager mucker! Good luck :-)

Still showing a great interest in the big Black Country team!!

If the hat fits the cranium Jack!

'Nuff said.

old golds worth more

Maybe he should try your hat, if anything it would be to big for him!

Is that a compliment?

old golds worth more

You replying on behalf of JTH now are you? The remark was addressed to him, and no it was not meant to be a compliment. Besides he should be too busy commenting on who the Baggies next manager is going to be, to make remarks about us.

Jack the Hat

old golds wort,

Now don't go falling out with each other like children do.

Ignore him richard, like a bad smell he'll go away soon enough.

In fact, ALL Wolves fans ignore Jack the **at!

'Nuff said.

Newcastle fans want in the team, they rate him.

They are angry with Pardew for letting a local talent go, who insists on buying foreigners instead.

Talented, hard worker, young and hungry, and free transfer.......sign him up.

Sir Billy Quiet

Boring, boring E&S - its going be a long summer if this is the standard of reporting...............

Other representatives from other Championship clubs tells me his representative is trying to make a fortune the .......

If they were playing Hearts hopefully they saw what a good player Hearts Ryan Stevenson is, he used to play for my local team Ayr United, if you want to see a cracking goal try You tube "Ryan Stevenson Ayr v Alloa" beats Ryan Giggs goal against West Ham ends up.

Fed up of Jack' s stupid comments. The other day there was outcry on the treatment of the Astle family being removed from the Albion ground for handing out flyers, not one comment from Mr mouth piece him self Jack the Hat. First inclination of a comment about wolves and he's on it like a tramp on chips! Mate your a disgrace, if you had the bottle you' d post your real name, like I have but I reckon your a coward, like most of the keyboard warriors from down the road, your a disgrace to a fan base .

Jack the Hat

richerd lemon,

Rattled your cage I see, too many like you , can't stand the truth. Never mind, a keep weather eye open for the F.F.P.D.

From what I saw on some YouTube videos he looks like he can play a bit.

I am realizing the pair of minds, Thelwell and Jackett, are making some shrewd decisions, and hoping that this could be another of them.

well if we don't get him then we could take a look at another Barnsley player is name is Jacob Mellis he can play as a normal midfielder or further forward as an attacking midfielder, strikers well we might see Leon Clarke go and Callum Wilson would be a better option then Harry Maguire is a great choice for a centre half and maybe westcarr that was at walsall but has been released.
