Wolves' Carl Ikeme proud of title win

Battered Carl Ikeme today insisted Wolves' latest title win feels better than 2009.

The outstanding Molineux keeper is nursing a swollen nose courtesy of an accidental boot from Danny Batth in yesterday's 3-1 win at Leyton Orient that helped clinch the League One crown sealed by Brentford's 2-2 draw at MK Dons. And he says he feels more part of this promotion.

Back in 2008-09, Ikeme played 14 games as Mick McCarthy's side swept to the Championship title. But the 27-year-old has played a much bigger role this time, helping to keep a club record 24 clean sheets.

"This one is better for me because I've been more heavily involved this time," said Ikeme. "I didn't play as much last time so I didn't feel as bigger part of it then. But I also think the fans are possibly enjoying it more – especially now, because they've got a team they can relate to. I think they sang every player's name at Leyton Orient so it shows how tight the club and the fans are. Hopefully we can move forward and take this into next season."

Ikeme has his eye on Charlton's League One points record of 101 achieved in 2011-12. Wolves are currently on 99 with two games left. "We keep thinking of having a party but there always seems to be another goal to achieve," added the keeper.

"I think 101 points is the record so every time we think of celebrating, there's something else to go for.

"Our focus is on the next game – I know it sounds boring but maybe 10 or 12 days after the end of the season, we'll have plenty of time to party then.

"We've got two games left and the fans are going to come out and support us and it's up to us to put on a show and put the effort.

Ikeme pulled off five superb saves to deny Leyton Orient in yesterday's flattering 3-1 win at the Matchroom Stadium on a day when Wolves clinched the League One title after Brentford could only draw 2-2 at MK Dons.
