Steve Davis plotting to spoil Wolves' promotion party

Crewe boss Steve Davis today set about delaying Wolves' promotion party after declaring: "I don't want them going up on our patch".

Victory at Gresty Road on Saturday will see Kenny Jackett's side promoted, should Rotherham fail to beat Bradford tomorrow night.

just a point short of mathematically guaranteeing Championship football, although a win will all but seal it because of their vastly superior goal difference.

But Birmingham-born Davis – a boyhood Wolves fan linked with the Molineux hotseat last summer – wants to throw a spanner in the works to increase their hopes of survival.

Crewe are currently fourth from bottom and just goal difference away from the safety line but have played a game more than next-placed Carlisle.

And Davis said: "I'm sure Wolves will be promoted and they'll probably win the title. They have good players and as a childhood Wolves fan I hope they do, but I'm only interested in them being promoted on May 3.

"But I don't want them making massive strides towards that on Saturday. The game is very important for us and my priority is getting the right result for Crewe.

"I'll take pleasure in seeing Wolves back in the Championship but will be all out to beat them."

Crewe won 2-0 at Preston in October and drew 3-3 against Rotherham on the opening day but have lost their other games against the top teams.

Davis added: "I'm sure Wolves will be favourites and we'll be seen as the underdogs. The bookmakers will write us off, the Wolves fans will be expecting to see their team win."

and I'm sure there will be Crewe fans who think we don't stand a chance.

"Within the club we think we can win.

"Wolves are the biggest club in our league and have proved to be the best in the division but that doesn't mean we can't beat them.

"This club has risen to the occasion before and had some great results in the past.

"I look at this group of players and feel we can do it again."

Davis insists all the pressure is on Wolves.

"The pressure is on Wolves because of the position they're in," he added.

"They'll bring a lot of supporters and they're expected to win.

"We know Wolves will not sit back and look to hit us on the break.

"They play an expansive game and that will suit us."
