Wolves fans aim for Molineux crowd of 30,000

Wolves fans today launched a new campaign aimed at filling Molineux with a 30,000 crowd for the Rotherham game on Good Friday – Molineux's highest for over 33 years.

The same organisers of the successful '#10K2MK' drive social media which helped attract a record-breaking 8,943 fans to the Milton Keynes Dons game last Saturday want to encourage supporters to cram Molineux to the rafters for what could be the game that clinches promotion on April 18.

"As a continuation of the #10K2MK campaign, we are now looking at getting #30k2WV1," said organiser and Stan Cullis Stand season ticket holder Richard Ralph, 43, from Coven.

WV1 is taken from Molineux's postcode, WV1 4QR.

"The game suggested by several people is the Good Friday game against Rotherham.

"We would like to emphasise that we'd like to fill Molineux for every game until the end of the season, but we appreciate not everyone will be able to do this, so we have targeted Good Friday.

"Good Friday is not a traditional football day in Wolverhampton, so we may need to rely on a lot of younger supporters, although I suspect fewer businesses stay open on that day these days."

Wolves top League One and need a maximum of 10 points from their last six games to secure automatic promotion after last night's 0-0 draw at Stevenage.

Ironically, fourth-placed Rotherham could be Wolves' biggest challengers as they can amass the most points outside the top two places because they have a game in hand, at Sheffield United next Tuesday.

Molineux's capacity is currently 31,700, but that would come down to around 31,000 as the uncovered seats in the south west corner – unused since relegation from the Premier League in May 2012 - would stay closed.

But officials today confirmed they could accommodate a 30,000-plus crowd for the match against Rotherham.

Molineux's last 30,000-plus gate was for the FA Cup quarter-final replay against Middlesbrough in March 1981, when 40,524 attended.

The last such league gate was 34,693 against Villa a month earlier.

The highest since then was 29,396 against Manchester United in January 2004, and the best this season is 28,598 against Leyton Orient on December 29.

When Molineux's rebuild was completed in 1993, the capacity was set at 28,500 but the uncovered seating in the south west corner added around 900 on.
