Kevin McDonald was today happy to have the last laugh and beat the Sheffield United boo-boys.

Playmaker McDonald was booed throughout Saturday's 2-0 win on his first return to Bramall Lane on Saturday after leaving the Blades for Molineux in a bargain £250,000 move in August.

The 25-year-old Scottish midfielder helped Wolves back to winning ways after two matches without a victory to cement their position at the top of League One.

Kenny Jackett's side moved five points clear of third-placed Leyton Orient with a game in hand and nine matches left.

And McDonald said: "It was nice to go back and to get a win made it much better.

"The early goal settled us down. It was hard for myself – I was getting a bit of abuse, but that was expected.

"The fans have their opinions. When I was there I couldn't say a bad word about them, they were great with me.

"It was unfortunate it ended that way, but that's football.

"I had two fantastic years there and I couldn't say a bad word about the club."

McDonald believes a return to winning ways at the home of a team which had gone 11 games unbeaten is a significant step in the promotion race.

"We knew we had to get back to winning ways," he said.

"But Sheffield United are on a great run and they've got some good players, so it was a great feeling to get three points after a couple of bad results.

"All the boys were buzzing in the dressing room, as you'd imagine.

"It was hard at times defending, but we felt in control and it was a good three points overall."

Head coach Kenny Jackett responded to the previous draw and defeat by making four changes to his team as captain Sam Ricketts, Jack Price, Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko made way for Matt Doherty, Lee Evans, Dave Edwards and Leon Clarke.

And McDonald felt the changes were justified.

"It was a different formation the manager went for and it paid off – fair play," he said.

"The manager made the change and it worked.

"'Evo' played just in front of me and I played a deeper role on my own.

"It was different because (Jack) Price is a different type of player, but it's good whoever I play with."

Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme made a superb save to deny Jose Baxter in the fourth minute and McDonald believes that was a defining moment in the game.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, but to get the three points the way we did is a nice feeling," he said.

"United still had chances and if the boy (Jose Baxter) scored early on it would have been a whole different game.

"But in the second half we showed a great team spirit to grind out the result ."
