Sheffield United 0 Wolves 2 - match report and pictures

Much-changed Wolves returned to winning ways to end form team Sheffield United’s march at Bramall Lane.

Man of the match James Henry’s cross gave Wolves a 16th-minute lead and was the Blades’ first conceded in nine games before the recalled Dave Edwards clinched it eight minutes after the break.

Although Carl Ikeme made a superb save from Jose Baxter in the fourth minute, it ended up being as routine a win as they have had for a while, and a 20th clean sheet of the season.

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett sprang a major surprise by making four changes to the side beaten 2-1 at Crawley on Tuesday.

Out went captain Sam Ricketts, Jack Price, Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko to be replaced by Matt Doherty, Lee Evans, Edwards and Leon Clarke.

But Wolves were quickly forced on the back foot by the in-form Blades as early as the fourth minute when Ikeme made a superb save to deny Baxter, flinging himself to his left to keep out the forward’s angled shot from the edge of the six-yard box from a loose ball after a cross dropped invitingly.

Wolves settled down however but it was the home side who dominated possession, with the visitors’ cause not helped by an over-zealous referee who seemed to favour United.

Michael Jacobs had Wolves’ first attempt on nine minutes but his left-foot drive lacked power and keeper Mark Howard made a falling save.

Wolves took the lead following a passage of decent play, but just like Henry’s goal at Brentford, there was an element of good fortune about it.

The run of Edwards did all the damage as Howard left it expecting him to change the direction of Henry’s cross, which instead dropped into the far corner of the net for his ninth goal of the season.

United went on to have most of the possession but they failed to test Ikeme.

Instead it was Wolves who went closest to another goal, Henry’s superb curling pacy shot hitting the inside of the post from 25 yards with Howard at full stretch in the 32nd minute.

Eight minutes later, Henry was at it again with another shot but this time his angled effort wide.

Wolves still had to be alert defensively however and Richard Stearman, who had another excellent game, headed John Brayford’s shot off the line when Ikeme was beaten seconds before half-time.

The visitors gave themselves the perfect start to the second half by scoring again.

And this time there was no element of luck about it as they netted a stylish goal.

Jacobs started it with a lovely crossfield ball from the left to Henry on the right and his left-footed cross was dummied by Evans and swept home by Edwards on the volley from 12 yards out.

Wolves shored things up with the arrival of Price for Evans on the hour but the next change was enforced as the unlucky Doherty picked up an injury and was replaced by Ricketts on 74 minutes.

Before that, on 66, United brought on the rangy Chris Porter for Baxter to change the angle of their attack, with a more direct route.

But Wolves had little trouble containing the hosts, who seemed tired and short on ideas.

And Jackett’s side saw the game out without further fuss to chalk up their 20th clean sheet of the season.

Normal service resumed.

Important win and against a good side in form too. Confidence booster for the lads and KJ once again got his selection right.

Onwards and most definatly upwards.

Stokewolf64

Another great performance and clean sheet against a form side. Interesting changes (that were probably needed to give some of them a rest) from KJ that seemed to work.

Well done lads, keep it going..

At the time of posting, the Saddlers are winning, so fingers crossed.

Still top of the League tonight.. Happy days..

Great win - on track again. Well done the Wolves.

Jackett the Hat

Brave, brave decisions by King Kenny, the coolest man at Molineux -

While everyone else is chewing their fingernails, the head coach is meticulous , calm and decisive , drops four of our better players , gives them a rest but keeps the whole squad hungry and still comes away with the points.

It's gotta be an indication that he wants a strong finish to the season.

1wolves

In Kenny we trust.

Ritchie Wolves

The Hat, Yes he's cool and boy does he know his squad but brave? Na!! your only brave when you take chances and don't really know what your doing!!!!

Great manager in the making if we all back him........

Come on............

Farmer Ted

Our head coach yet again proves he knows best. Rested four leading players and still comes up trumps. Couldn't be there today to enjoy pooping the Sheffield United party but Colchester MK Dons here I come. Not too worried about Brentford it's Orient we need to target. C'mon Walsall (HT 1-0)

chris h

Farmer Ted, I should imagine today's win would have been very satisfying for Kenny Jackett. Excellent win against an inform side away and changes in personnel and tactics working a treat. 5 points clear and a game in hand, almost there.

nik.hare1

As I said after the Crawley defeat, the doom and gloom merchants were sharpening their knives. But Kenny jacket has and will get teams promoted from this league. What a superb response from the lads. To stop the blades. What was it, 9/10 wins out of the last 11? Untill the played wolves.

Just like brentford and orient the good teams are finding out just how determined WWfc are this season. Roll on Tuesday and Colchester. U t w.

karlwolves

WERE TOP OF THE LEAGUE,WERE TOP OF THE LEAGUE, WERE WOLVERHAMPTON AND WERE TOP OF THE LEAGUE. WELL DONE LADS GREAT RESPONSE TO THE DOUBT OURS.

Karl: just a minor point, but it makes a big difference matey..

"We're top of the League" not "Were...." :o)

What a win, we are on a roll again hopefully, lets fill the mol for the remainder of the season and send the lads up in style.

Great result after the disapointment against Crawley mid week, hopefully the boys are back on track and can keep putting pressure on the chasing pack. Come on me babbies.

The Flying Winger

Credit to Jackett for mixing the team a bit, whatever the why's and wherefores it worked, with the games to get through should help the team.

Good result and allows us to push on again..

Lesta_Wolf

Well done WWFC, back to winning ways. Hope we can keep it going.

SEATTLE WOLF

Kenny Jackett is a master-class in THIS league! Keep it rolling, Wolves! Fantastic result, and the March towards a championship rolls on!

Bloseph

Looks like Stearman has found his level.

Shalom

What's that supposed to mean???!!!!!!

Farmer Ted

Totally unnecessary and VERY ignorant.

Statos Boring Brother

Perhaps it something to do with having an extended run in one position with the same defensive partner rather than the constant chopping and changing he's had in the last few years.

The Flying Winger

No need for that, he is and has always played well for the team and club.

I too

Stearman is becoming the new Jody Craddock.

A little more coaching from Jody please in readyness for the Championship and Premiership.

UTW

sue

I thought this was a great win so why have a go at Stearman,

Orlando Wolves

With a comment like that my friend, you most certainly have found your level!

Wingy

Stearman was one of the first to acknowledge the away fans so why such a stupid comment ?

nik.hare1

so when wwfc signed stearman from leicester, an england U21 defender, why did you not make that remark ,bloseph?

1. you just need a hate figure,(karl henry)

2. okay he was found out at premier level, but who was'nt?

3. our goals conceded tells you that, stearman has improved and he is trying to make amends for last seasons failings.

4. you could be a naughty baggie out to cause mischief.

utw.

Wednesbury wolves

Hate figure Karl kick the ball sideways or backwards Henry, one of the worst players to wear a gold and black shirt and one of the reasons along with the other 9 players we got relegated 2 years running, have left out ikeme.

Farmer Ted

Why rehash all that unnecessary cobblers?

That's gone, this is now.

However remember two things.

1)Karl Henry skippered the most successful Wolves side since the Seventies.

2) Many posters on these threads look forward to your opinions; you are very informed and sometimes we have our legs crossed in anticipation.

sue

He was also one of the players who helped us get into the premiership but doesn't that count in your world, hate figure maybe by some but not all!!!

Totally agree with you Farmer Ted but that's not unusual.

Tomwolf

A good solid performance by the lads. I said yesterday, lets see if we can do to Sheffield, what we did to Brentford, and end their excellent run. And we did just that, two well taken goals, and another clean sheet. It would have been easy to have collapsed, after the last two games. But fair play to the lads, they got themselves back on track today, against the inform team. It sounded like Henry was m.o.t.m. but Dave Edwards, also played very well. I thought it made sense to rest some players today,it's no point having a big squad like ours,if you dont utilise it. And it certainly worked in our favour. Also a big well done to our back four, especially Stearman who was also excellent, and Ikeme, who made a top save in first few minutes WELL PLAYED THE LADS: UTW: And what great away supporters nearly 3,000 of them, who out sang the Blades fans.

I am worried for top spot chillo, couldn't make it today as I've only just finished work, were they convincing today mate? As Tuesday night they lacked everything, looking forward to colchester now at the golden palace, then mk dons next Saturday, wot a day out that's gonna be, bet there won't be many steptoes around 2nite, like last Saturday!!!!!!!!

Chillo Wolf

I didn't go as last time i went to Bramall lane we lost 3-0 (and I'm painting the nursery for a new Wolves fan that arrives in August - just in time for new season in the Championship)

However, commentary suggests it was a good win, good performance although we were put under pressure at times but dealt with the it admirably.

Sounds like Henry was well worth MoTM

Bath Wolf

Well done to the lads today, a terrific score line after last week. Good to see KJ mixing it up a little too. UTW

Statos Boring Brother

Yes - that's better.

I was a bit more confident about this match as Sheffield were never going to stick 10 men back in defence and try to score on the break as we've had to play against in the last tow matches. Looks like KJ has spotted a bit of tiredness or niggling injuries with his changes and, hopefully, Doherty's knock won't be too bad.

I'll also claim some credit as I was stuck in deepest Devon with no internet and resisted the temptation to check it up on teletex (I'm sure it was partly my fault for the Crawley games as I broke my own rule and checked the score before the finish which has always been bad luck since teletex was invested in the 1970/80's).

UTW

Bruce, Trinidad

Phew great to get back to winning ways with Brentford breathing down our necks. Thanks to Walsall for holding Orient.

Black Country Wanderer

Great win today, must give KJ credit for swapping things around,a lot of players booked shows how much we wanted it today

Play offs now confirmed as lowest we can finish is 6th ,but we need to show the same effort against the lower sides in this league to finish off the job,9 to go, win 5 and we go up, win 6 and probably champions, but still hard games to come and will need everyone at their best for every game.

Down to 2 from 3 now, with Preston dropping more points, cant see them or Rotherham catching us, even though we have to play Rotherham yet, and Orient, which should seal promotion when we beat them,we seem to go up a gear when it really matters, so ive no doubt we will beat Orient,as we did Brentford

The French connection will benefit from a break, and hopefully come back refreshed and with a point to prove to everyone, in the final run in,they are obviously talented players ,but do get complacent and start showboating, we are not in the position to do that yet, perhaps in the last few games we can afford the fancy stuff, i certainly hope so,but for now we need to match every team that we play for effort, our quality will then see us through, much maligned Edwards can do that for a few games np, always a threat and always gives 100%, if not always in full control of his thought process lol

Daylight has been created,we now need to stretch our legs and get through the 80s asap, once thats done ill breath a lot easier

Slawit Wolf

Make no mistake, Ikeme's save in the fourth minute was unbelievable. The Blades guy wasn't that far out and hit it hard. How Carl got to it I just don't know. Looking forward to seeing it again on Wolves Player. If that had gone in, who knows what would have happen in the match. But it didn't and Wolves came away with an excellent win. Good to see Dave Edwards have a really good game in his preferred position. UTW.

TrueStaffordshireknot

Just back from match. A strong, combative and reassuring imposing performance by the lads today, as they completely out-played a team bang in form, with no help from a referee who did us absolutely no favours throughout. With so many meritless bookings, I think he wanted to get an invite to the team’s Christmas party. Whole team played well today – hard to single anyone out as that would be unfair, but I thought McDonald, in particular, was absolutely terrific. Up against his former club - and remorselessly booed every time he touched the ball - he proceeded to show the Blades’ fans exactly what they were missing – he didn't put a foot wrong all game, was always pressing and probing and making himself available, and generally strolled through the entire 90 mins, delivering a master class in control. What a fantastic acquisition he has proved to be - along with the rest of KJ’s nuggets.

Only weak spot I could identify was at no 9 where Clarke (although clearly possessing great close control) seemed strangely out of sorts for a man with a hatful of goals already this season. If anything, he seems a bit lightweight. His attempted chip over the goalie at 2-0 when he was put clean through was extravagantly wasteful, and could have been costly had Sheff Utd not been totally strangled out of the game thereafter by our all-round superiority.

Ikeme was his normal masterful self – and his save in the second minute at point blank range was absolutely fantastic.

And so we move on - a welcome return to form after the Crawley aberration. Orient and Preston now dropping away, but Rotherham seem unstoppable at the moment – we need to put them in their place. A great reception from the travelling fans, today, and nice to see it so warmly reciprocated by the whole team at full time. Well done, everybody! Onwards and upwards.

Wolves Mick

Last time we drew and then lost - we followed up with 9 straight wins !! 1 Down 8 to go :-) Up The Wolves

Doyler!

Well done lads! Great win and well earned three points. Well played to Stears, Henry and Edwards in particular. We're heading in the right direction and hopefully we'll have no more blips like at Crawley, but that's football.

Roll on Tuesday night.

UTW.

Stokewolf64

Doyler: it was great to hear the radio commentators saying how well Dave Edwards was playing, really pleased for him. Just hope he stays injury free to the end of the season.

UTW

Solentwolves

So we did indeed 'rain on the Blades's parade' and put a dent in their anniversary celebrations. And to think that beforehand, I said that although I hoped for a win, I'd settle for a draw. I apologise for that. I'm pleased to see Edwards and Stearman are playing their parts - for me they are a link with my STH days, survivors from the past. UTW.

shockwave1965

Great win!! I would have been pleased with a draw given their recent run. I was a bit dubious of the team selection with no Dicko & Sako but it paid dividends and all credit to Kenny Jackett. Shame Clarke missed that sitter but its three points and another clean sheet.

Onwards & upwards

shockwave1965

Why did we play it that ridiculous kit????? Unless we are all colour blind where is the clash with red and white stripes and gold??

We used to play in gold shorts if they clashed and years ago (1970s) it didn't matter!

Don't know why we can't play in the white with something like a gold or black stripe along the shoulders and sleeves and shorts etc.

Stearmans overhead kick

Moaning about the strip? , Strips don't matter, It's the blokes inside em that matters. Who cares about the colour of the second strip? I don't, Would you have been happy to play in gold and black today and lost?

shockwave1965

Re, Stearman's overhead kick.

That's a stupid remark mate! So you are saying we should change our kit from what has been our traditional colours for years??

What I'm saying is why change the kit when there ain't a clash.

Get a life pal!

Stearmans overhead kick

I have a life mate, I'm not the one moaning about a strip on the back of a very good away win, Look up Michael Palins Ripping yarns on you tube about shorts,And you will see you are the one that needs a life.

shockwave1965

I was making a perfectly viable comment about playing in a ridiculous kit. You need to get a life pal for making a stupid comment.

And yes I do have a life but I don't watch crap!

derbyshirewolf

It was a much, much sharper, less jaded team performance. The work rate was exceptional. It was very brave decision making by K.J. to include four different players into the starting line up, but their freshness added an extra zip to Wolves play. McDonald, much to the frustration of home supporters, showed them just what they had lost, and Edwards proved to me his value, and deserves to be part of things next season. My personal unsung hero is Golbourne, who, for one of small stature, is so solid in defence, so creative in his link up play, and rarely wastes a pass. He is so good that he rarely has to be mentioned, unlike his M.M. anointed predecessor, who was never a left back anyway. Roll on Tuesday.

TrueStaffordshireknot

Quite agree about Golboune - he rarely gets a mention solely because he is so exceptionally tidy and skilful, and his level of performance so consistently high, that his contribution goes virtually unnoticed. Aside from his terrier-like defending, he is a terrific outlet down the left side and is always looking to do something positive with the ball. Another of JK's great signings.

Stokewolf64

Derbyshire: couldn't agree more mate..

Golbourne has been an outstanding acquisition, with MacDonald marginally shading him..

I really hope that Edwards (and Stearman) are given new/ extended contracts next season, they both deserve them.

Sheffield United celebrating 125 years and the away end still had the original toilets !

chris h

Wingy. The fundamentals havn't changed in 125 years have they so why change a good thing.

Putza Shiftin

I was in the ground early and with all the big build up for the 125 year anniversary, I thought it would be a big challenge to come away with three points. Blades had roughly the same number of chances but when they looked like scoring, Karl Ikeme was at his best! We were probably the only club in the division capable of raining on their parade today and we had to work got it but never looked like anything but a Wolves win! Fantastic support again too!

Noseman

After Ikeme's save in the first few minutes we never looked in any danger apart from the officials. A shocking one-side performance by the referee.

mardygit

That was a superb win today, against a very good Blades side in their own back yard, it does not get any better than that in this league. We must win the league now, at the start of the season I never expected us to take six points off the Blades. Lets finish this magnificent season with an unbeaten run to the finish, you lads KJ and the whole coaching staff are the pride of Wolverhampton, long may it continue. COME ON WOLVES.

Top performance lads, blew away a side with their tails up just as we did to Brentford. No idea what went amiss midweek but KJ in control with the right answers as always.

20 clean sheets for the big fella and another towering performance today. Pity he can't take BF's seat on the plane in the summer. A very poor 4 cs's this season doesn't exactly fill you with confidence if, god forbid, we need a Hart transplant in Brazil.

This was a big win after the dip of the last 2 games. it shows there is character in the team and that we do have a hungry squad. Jackett has been a master this season, doing automatic pretty much everything right. He is just the Manager WW need. Let's kick on again for automatic promotion. Jackett has now distanced us from the FAILURE squad of players who got us relegated twice. Now complete the job by getting rid of Johnson , O'Hara, Doyle and the others who can't even get on the subs bench. It is so nice that Moxey and Morgan have kept silent ........ keep up the good job boys.

Albrightondek

A lively match which at times resembled a cup tie; meaty challenges, match-winning saves, a goal line clearance, bookings and of course goals. Great atmosphere, particularly in the Wolves end. Several players could deserve to be awarded the man of the match. Edwards, Jacobs, Henry and Stearman were for me, the stand out players, but more importantly it was the fact that all of the team contributed to the win.

The defence were again the basis of this victory. They restricted Utd to only a few real chances. Ikeme made two match winning saves, and Stearman was perfectly positioned to head a goal bond effort off the line.

Maybe the first goal had an element of luck about it. Most people in the Wolves end thought Edwards had scored it. The Blades goalkeeper should have done better even if he was distracted by Edwards. But our second goal was a superb effort. Jacobs pinpoint pass across the field to Henry who controlled it instantly and then crossed it into the middle for Edwards to make no mistake with a clean strike. A goal to savour.

This win puts us back on track for promotion and the title. Orient are faultering, so as I see it, Brentford are the only team that can now stop us winning the title.

Looking forward to Tuesday night against Colchester, and then it's a Jolly Boys outing to Milton Keynes.

Ye Olde South Bank

Yesterday, I think we learned something about the team's character, resolve and self-belief. A visit to Bramall Lane isn't the easiest task at the best of times, let alone when they've been in such scintillating form. To bounce back in such emphatic style after two disappointing results speaks volumes for their character. Very, very well done, boys. Proud of you all.

The question was asked last week concerning if KJ had a Plan B. Well, we got a resounding answer to that with some bold selections that paid off admirably. Not only can this squad play some highly attractive, cutting football, but they can dig in, too.

Twenty clean sheets? The bedrock for sustained success. Our defensive unit are doing a fine job, but perhaps Richard Stearman, more than most, deserves a special pat on the back. He's taken some flak over the years but has bounced back with some very assured displays. Fair play to the lad, I say.

This ones for you McD, Henry outstanding again, great team effort. Onward and upward

Lobo para siempre

I'd like to add my congratulations to all concerned on a great show. Good to see the much-maligned (in these posts) Edwards have a really good game. I think he is a class player.

I agree with the negative comments about the away strip - a sort of all-over blue rinse. Still, no doubt the shirt sponsors want their pound of flesh from the fans. But I look forward to the day when our kit resembles something like old gold and black. It was good enough home and away in the fifties. (Showing my age now!)

Rhys.wwfc

Change in comments from this time last year is spectacular, how a change of manager and a run at the top of league one can have such a positive effect on fans, even JIWAL has had good things to say! Keep it up in the champs my fellow family.

that bald Russian or whatever guy got rid of Ronald Zubar who held his own for a while in the premiership , dimwit saunders loaned stearman to Ipswich last season , still think we might have stayed up if ebanks had not broken his leg so would like to see him again at m'neux , if Philips can still help Leicester at age of 40 , ebanks could still help us find the net , believe that ebanks was messed around by mmcthy and he never was given a fair chance in the premier league , interesting to see qpr have dropped doyle and henry after they both did not help their promotion bid , but mmcthy is playing the dreadful Stephen hunt who is messing up his play off bid , Leicester wolf

ivor.smith.58

I thought we were dead when I saw the team selection. I'll have more faith in future in KJ - well done - a hard fought match and back to winning ways. Here's hoping we can continue on Tuesday and start to consolidate an automatic promotion place.

S.O.S.

Even though we may be in different leagues, defeats for WBA, Brum and the hammering that Villa had today it proves that Wolves are still the BEST team in the West Midlands. See you next season WBA and Brum. That's an easy 12 points on our way to the Premiership.

leicester wolf

on the karl henry debate what is unarguable is that while lampard banged in over 200 goals at the top level for Chelsea , karl banged in 1 (or was it 2 counting a cup reply v crystal palace) over at least 5 seasons , truly appalling for a midfield player , even gerrard playing in a defensive role for l'pool this season has a respectable 10 goals to his name ; former midfielders alex rae and paul ince scored a few a piece but they were not prolific goal scorers either and neither was Paul Cook before them and so if young Michael Jacobs could develope into a goal scoring midfielder , that would be great ; henry captained the side that went up but it was the goals of SEB that actualy got us up .

When Dean Saunders took over , he announced oddly that our squad was too big , loaned out stearman and others , had some injures and then frantically tried to get in loanees from other clubs such as casper gorkes from reading - hopeless !
