Steve Bull: Karl Henry should not have got involved in Wolves' Wayne Hennessey saga

Steve Bull today urged Wolves to put the Wayne Hennessey saga behind them and focus on promotion – as he branded Karl Henry "stupid" for getting involved.

moreKeeper Hennessey's refusal to play against Gillingham on Friday and subsequent apology have been aggravated by the tweet from ex-captain Henry attacking head coach Kenny Jackett's role in the controversy.

Henry, now at Championship promotion challengers QPR, accused Jackett of treating the 26-year-old keeper "like s***", although he subsequently deleted the comment.

But legend Bully is anxious the club move on and focus on picking up their promotion form.

"Wayne was guilty of stupidity and probably a little bit of immaturity," said Bull.

"Whether or not he is leaving, you have got to play for the club paying your wages. It's as simple as that.

"You can't spend your life as a footballer worrying about whether or not you will get injured. I've known lads get injuries stepping out of a car or getting out of bed."

"Wayne got that wrong but it's good that he has realised it and apologised. He's now got a chance, whether it's for a week, two weeks, a month or the rest of the season, to repair his reputation – because that has taken a battering among the fans.

"Karl has been just as stupid getting involved in Twitter. I know what that is – that's Karl sticking up for an old mate. You understand that but he should not have got involved.

"Like all Wolves fans, I just want a line drawn under all this and for the team to get on with the only thing that matters this season, promotion."

In a follow-up meeting with Jackett yesterday, Hennessey conceded he had made a serious "error of judgement" in declining to play at Gillingham amid speculation of an imminent move to Crystal Palace.

And despite Henry's tweet, there is no resentment by the goalkeeper towards the head coach in the way the controversy has been handled.

The Welsh international is now in the frame to play against Preston on Saturday but definitely out of the picture for the rest of the season is Roger Johnson.

The central defender yesterday clinched a return to the Premier League with a loan until the end of the campaign with West Ham United. Johnson is not Cup tied and eligible to play in the club's Carling Cup semi-finals against Manchester City.
