Wolves Under-21s’ four-match unbeaten run was ended by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium as they went down 2-1 last night.
Ryo Miyaichi gave the Gunners a 19th-minute lead before Wolves’ Swedish midfielder Tim Jakobsson equalised on half-time.
Substitute Austin Lipman sealed the points with 14 minutes left as Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards got a much-needed 90 minutes under his belt.
Wolves striker David Moli had the ball in the net in the seventh minute but it was ruled offside, before Jakobsson’s free-kick deflected just wide a minute later.
The home side began to find their feet after a slugging opening, and on 17 minutes Ainsley Maitland-Niles played a slide-rule pass through to Anthony Jeffrey but the winger rushed his shot and toe-poked the ball wide.
Arsenal took the lead when Wolves failed to clear Thomas Eisfeld’s inswinging corner and Miyaichi flicked the ball past keeper Jon Flatt.
Edwards had sight of goal in the 27th minute but his 25-yard drive flew over.
Arsenal went closer to doubling their lead in the 34th minute, when Maitland-Niles’ shot was blocked by Jamie Tank on the line after Hector Bellerin crossed.
Miyaichi’s cross then saw Eisfeld’s shot deflected, but the ball rolled agonisingly wide.
Wolves’ leveller came against the run of play when Kristian Kostrna’s cross found Jakobsson unmarked and the midfielder powered a header past keeper Damien Martinez.
After the break the game became stretched, and in the 50th minute, Edwards blasted over.
Then Arsenal’s Nico Yennaris headed wide from Eisfeld’s cross.
Arsenal grabbed the winner when Lipman fired a swerving shot past Flatt after Miyaichi picked him out in space, and the substitute took one touch before shooting.
