Stearman’s ever-present League One record this season is over after new signing Scott Golbourne kept his place at left-back for Saturday’s 3-2 win over Swindon.
The 25-year-old is set to continue on the bench tonight when Walsall return to Molineux for the league derby re-arranged from earlier this month because of international commitments.
“I don’t think there’s much between them, and, in terms of Richard, he’s very unlucky to be out of the team,” admitted Jackett. “But there will be times when he’ll come back in as well and he’ll be difficult to shift when he does.
“If we’re going to do what we’ve set out to do this season (win promotion) we’ll need that level of good players throughout our back-line.
“If I’m looking at back-four appearances so far, Golbourne played well on Saturday and has made a good start for us, but it’s been four of those five so far out of Golbourne, Ricketts, Stearman, Danny Batth and Matt Doherty.
“You can then put Foley and Ethan Ebanks-Landell into that, so there’s seven players in all.
“Take the other six and they’re all of quite a senior nature now with Doherty and Batth having played a few games.
“You’re looking for that type of strength to compete, make sure you don’t get injuries and that type of competition.
“Richard comes into that; it’s been four from five so far, with players such as Foley making number six and Ebanks-Landell, who’s a good player, number seven.
“And for every unit, you need that type of competition and cover.
Any good club requires that.”
Jackett, meanwhile, is happy for Ricketts, who has shown no ill-effects from the knee injury he picked up on international duty, to continue playing centre-back.
“He can play any of the back-four positions; I just felt that we had an opportunity to take Golbourne because of his contractual position, and somewhere along the line, we needed a left-footed option from left-back,” added Jackett.
And the head coach all but confirmed an unchanged starting line-up, adding: “It will be the same group with a minimal amount of changes, if any.
“Whether I tinker with a substitute, I don’t know at this stage but there’s no need to change a lot and I’m not necessarily looking to either.”
