Wolves' Kevin Doyle praised for his loyalty

Wolves today paid tribute to striker Kevin Doyle for turning his back on the trail out of Molineux this summer.

Wolves today paid tribute to striker Kevin Doyle for turning his back on the trail out of Molineux this summer.

Chief executive Jez Moxey has confirmed that the opportunity for Doyle to follow the path taken by former team-mates Michael Kightly, Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis to the Premier League began to appear in the final days of the transfer window.

But Moxey said he and the club were thrilled when Doyle showed no interest in following up interest from Villa and Everton.

Doyle has stayed to take on a key role in the new era under Stale Solbakken, captaining the team at Cardiff and being confirmed as one of two vice-captains.

Moxey said: “The big positive for us with Kevin was that he never fell into that category of ‘I want away’.

“There was interest in him and one or two Premier League clubs called us about him and he was aware of it. It never materialised into a bid but there was interest.

“But at no point did he say ‘I want to leave’ and he deserves great credit for that.

“There were enquiries and they were from established Premier League clubs but Kevin said all along that he was strictly behind us and that sort of commitment is to be praised.”

Doyle himself revealed last week he was happy to honour the commitment of club to player when he signed his previous contract.

And his public acclaim from Moxey today goes hand-in-hand with the thanks of his nation following his last-gasp winner for Ireland against Kazakhstan in Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

Doyle struck as a “super sub”, his Wolves’ relegation having cost him a starting role for Ireland.

He said: “It’s a consequence of me getting relegated last year at Wolves. I can’t be expecting to be getting picked for Ireland when there’s two or three lads playing ahead of me in the Premier League every week.

“That’s my own problem, my own fault and I’ve to get back playing at the highest level as soon as possible.”

Loyal... Creditable... Now all he has to do is score a goal every now and then and he'll be the model striker.

Sydney_wolf

Go on and start whinging all of you doomsdayers about Doyle not scoring enough goals. He has been a fantastic servant for the club and me for one am really glad that he is not going anywhere.

I think once all of the new players get settled in, Watch out the championship.

They have all shown glimpses of hope individually and I really hope that they gel soon and that should get the whinges off their backs

Justin

Good lad! Not many like him about.

Leatherhead Wolf

Good to see. Doyle deserves credit for this show of loyalty - but then the man showed similar class when Reading went down and by honouring his commitment to join Wolves when other clubs offered more. I hope that a run of form follows and he fits in with the "new" Wolves. He is a class act and deserves reward.

knocker knowles

Total waste of space !!!!!!

JJ

Sheer stupidity from Everton's and Villa's part to consider going after a Wolves striker days after they just sold another striker and already having loads of money in the bank with no need to sell.

Did they really think Wolves were even going to answer the phone?

luke skywalker

What a super level headed guy. A rare breed in this day and age. Here's to Doyler getting back to his best soon! Will always get my 100% support.

BALHAM WOLF

Kevin Doyle is a class act and his loyality has been noted by all us Wolves fans. We now need to get behind the team and management as we all know how tough this league is to get out of.

Score, score as once you get one you'll get....

southbankdan

Few and far between these days in all fairness his form hasn't been great for a while but it is coming back now.

Could be a big player this year for us

PJB

For once I am glad to endorse the words of Moxey. Kevin Doyle came here as an accomplished striker with a good scoring record but has (hopefullly temporarily) been ruined by McCathy and Connor who ran him into the ground for three years often as a lone striker with totally inadeqaute support. Hope the current regime can get him back to where we all want him to be.

Cornish Wolf

An old fashioned bloke with an old fashioned attitude in an old fashioned club. Great!!

It shows up those grasping greedy tykes who seem to think of only more, more, more.

Lead by example Kevin the team is in dire need of that.

Up The Wolves

UBWolf

Great attitude with those final words of Mr Doyle in this article plus at a time when all seems pear shaped I think it is a ray of light...out of darkness...!

Notice the transfer rumours talk about offering a contract to young Mr. Ismail. I just wonder after all the hype whether he will make it. He is a talent and I have spoken to youth coaches about him but just hope he and one of two other younger players can step up into the adult game.

I do hope so as the club needs to bridge the gap between young talent developed through the academy and the first team.

KEEPINGTHEFAITH

Very thankfull to doyler for stoppıng unlıke the rest. players lıke doyle are very rare because of hıs loyalty the fact that hes puttıng hıs 1st 11 place ın ROI at stake for wolves faır play to hım because he does non stop runnıng all game and people need to gıve hım alot more credıt were ıt ıs due!

Albrightondek

When Doyle is playing well he's a great asset to the team. But there were too many times last season when he went off the boil.

Also, he has in my opinion never formed a convincing partnership with Ebanks-Blake. Seemed to play better as a lone striker.

The Molineux Ghost

Players like Kev are very rare these days.

He lives in the world of football where money rules !!! I hope the fans appreciate your actions.

Finchy

No bids = Loyalty !!!

Dont be fooled by this, he stayed because no one wanted him. He is right off the boil! needs some serious work maybe if he scores more than five this season and some of them outside the 6 yard box and not penalties he may get his loyalty tested next season.... =/

Bradley Bill

Exactly what interest did Villa and Everton ever show in Doyle? Was this before or after Villa spent nearly £8 million on Benteke and Bowery and Everton signed Mirallas for up to £9 million?

I wish both Moxey and the E & S would stop pedalling this tripe! There was no interest and never was! Just a desperate CEO trying to justify his efforts to move Doyle on and reduce the wage bill!

chris hoggard

1 I am sure Kevin Doyle is a nice bloke, but he needs to get a lot nastier in front of goal.

2 The national newspapers seem to cover our club's current plight a lot differently to the local newspapers. The Independent on Sunday under the heading 'Connor's sacking an utter disgrace' ,made the following comments,'Nothing will change because of this misfortune.Directors will continue to act with the freedom of despots ,because their patronage is so sought after.' Think about it Messrs Swain and Nash.

Loyalty???? Who decides what loyalty is ????

Bully was my description of Loyalty.

Bully could have gone to malority of the clubs in the uk and even some of the top european clubs.

That is loyalty yet he never played in the top league!

Doyle as had 4yrs and all of them have been a struggle for him.

Doyle did v well for us in his 1st season last season was a complete no show.

He was constantly picked for his country and constantly dissappointed by his to regular poor performances just the same at club level.

Yes he played well the other night looked a threat and ran at the opposition defence twisting and turning etc.

I think this maybe down to STALE has he may have been told forget backing into defenders and chesting the ball to no one.

old gold

loyal maybe but did anybody come in for him

his goal scoring is very poor. maybe the club

can say why ismail wonder boy who reportedly

millenium man

This chap, is not motivated by greed and ego. Football needs new role models, not the current me, me, me brigade.

Kevin will hit form again, Im sure of it.

Stale, has the task of getting a dressing with no divisions; then building a playing eleven who play to 100% of their potential.

The game has changed for the worse- we are paying to watch a contact sport that is fast becoming like a netball match.

The clubs rear four have possible issue, with confidence because of silly referee decisions.

ok i can understand the cynicism ..but i think doyler deserves great credit for his attitude..he could have got a move if he d really pushed it..but he didnt..

He will be an asset to the team and he WILL get his form back..

Yes he s had a tough job being a lone striker a lot of the time..let s not underestimate what that s taken out of him..plus the down of another relegation AND he s no doubt had a bit of turmoil about staying or leaving..i think he s shown glimpses already that he s on his way back..well done moxey for his support and staale for making him vice cap....

Why are Albion fans commenting on wolves issues knocking moxey and Doyle stick to your own pages

old gold

no20,Bob Wolf, suggest you stick to monopoly or snakes and ladders, as you appear to know nothing about football.

Loyal Wulfrian

The knockers are out in force again some fans are very bitter, on the positive side it is nice for someone to be loyal, not like that snake Kightly.

Good Luck to Doyle I hope he comes good this year, I think that he was told to play the way he did, now if he can get in the box more, he WILL score goals.

vindaloopi

im glad doyle stayed with us but i would really like moxey to go taking ward stearman and berra with him

mardygit.

Good to see Doyler is staying,he is vital for us no one else can do the job he does.He will never be a prolific striker,he wasn't at Reading but he brings other people into play sets others up. I said on a previous topic that i hope we could keep Fletch till January because he would attract more interest, hence a bigger transfer fee, well he as started with a bang for Sunderland at Swansea. We should now ask for the whole fee because he as already paid for himself O'neill's laughing at us,Robbie Keane all over again.COME ON YOU WOLVES.

UTW

Keeping Kevin Doyle at Wolves is undoubtely a plus for the club.He has shown himself to be honourable in the past, when he was quoted that he would never allow his contract to run out and deprive the club of a transfer fee and he invariably works hard for the team. Perhaps the new management may consider playing him in midfield, where I think he has played earlier in his career. This would take the pressure off him to score goals and maximise his seemingly boundless energy. Just a thought. Anyone agree?

Filthy Wolf

I'd have to leave this to most fans who see matches week in week out, but isn't Doyle better as an Attacking Midfielder? Never rated him up front.

Average of 1 in 5! I'd of Paid his metro fair to villa park absolute waste of space. More like he realised championship was his level and even in this league he looks lost!

SEZ LEZ 1949

Fair play to Doyler, credit where its due.

Me, and my 2 sons (season ticket holders)are all big fans of Doyle.

I agree him, and Blake dont seem to be a good partnership.

I would like to see Doyle playing just behind front two.

I also see there are still moaners, and people having a go about his lack of goals, the way MM played him i am not surprised, call themselves Wolves Fans???

C'mon me babbies, Wolves forever.

STAFFORD PETE

i wont be taking any brain surgeons jobs either, mainly because no one is offering me one ! bit like doyle.he must realise he and the rest of the old guard are just championship relegation fodder.

Solentwolves

It must be most unsettling to have your mates and management team leaving for pastures new - so I hope that Kevin will adjust to the new set-up and have a great season. I won't hold it against him if he moves on in due course - especially if he can find the form to fire us towards the top of the league before he goes.

URANUS WORK IT OUT ! AND GET A GRIP !

MOXEY OUT AND MORGAN WHERES THE REAL MONEY GONE ??

StripedPyjamaThrostle

"Why are Albion fans commenting on wolves issues knocking moxey and Doyle stick to your own pages"

With all due respect, the end of last season demonstrated your own fans' distaste for Moxey on these boards and in the stands - there's no need for Albion fans to post comments pretending to be Wolves fans on the matter.

The truth sayer

What a lovely good news story??!!!

Wow had to dig deep to find a good news story at the Mol these days.

But is this the best E+S/Wolves could find?

A player who played poorly last season albeit in a team bereft of ideas and quality has stated he has no intention of leaving, and now that the transfer window has closed???

Was he making such a bold statement when there was even the slightest chance of a move elsewhere? Errm no.

Plus, who would want him? A striker who doesnt score goals? If thats what a team is looking for then Emile Heskey is still available on a free.

Come on loyal fans see this for what it is, a desperate attempt to report some good news coming out of a club that is slowly sliding towards Championship mediocrity.

They may as well have said," Wolves are pants and have sold their best saleable assetts, the others we couldnt move on, so until we do or their form changes, we are stuck paying them, so please come in your thousands to fill the new stand nobody wanted or needed".

Face some facts:

The manager needs time due to his lack of experience of both English football and the Championship.

Wolves have too many players not good enough.

The new players need time.

The fans need to get real and realise Wolves are a real distance away from being an adequate Premier League team.

Finally, as much as Wolves fans hate it, the model Wolves should be following is the one Albion have taken.

Hurts i know, but the truth it is.

Sir Billy Quiet

Marvellous - same old people having a moan again!!

What would these people do with their sad lives if they did'nt have E&S stories to moan about?

realist

Straight away before any talk of interest Doyle cam out and said he was prepared to stay at Wolves. Whether people think he was good enough for a move or not, that's a better attitude than some others.

I like Doyle as a player and as a professional, if he can regain form, he will be a huge asset for us, but what has the world come to when we have to praise players for being prepared to continue playing for a club that they signed a contract with.

Personally I feel the FA and other governing bodies need to come forward and put in place some regulations that give power back to football clubs. Contracts mean nothing now, and if a player has a strop and asks to leave, he's probably going to go whether they have signed a 5 year contract or not.

1959 WOLF

He hardly ever scored when managed by McMuppet so we will see how many he scores with a new manager. Not holding my breath. The loyalty bit is nonsense. Agree with those who say nobody wanted him.

5 Knocker Knowles

I agree with you completely. A total waste of space. Just stop posting and do us all a favour.

In the Premiership we played Park The Bus. Doyle was played up front on his own a lot of the time and it's very difficult to score goals against Premiership defences single handedly. Also think the upcoming Euros affected his form during that truly awful second half of the season. When the team settles down I think you'll find his goals will come.

Vindaloopi. You've taken great pleasure in telling us all that you were deserting the Wolves this season, so why bother coming on here with your nonsense? Have you borrowed Knocker Knowles' brain for the day ?

SOUTHWICK WOLF

Some people are simply never satisfied. The likes of Bob Wolf crack me up. Do you wake up each day in eager anticipation of whatever vitriol you can spout, Bob? Is this your nature generally, or is it only reserved for your favourite footy team or this site?

Perhaps you would care to spend a little time writing about what would make you happy with Wolves as a club. Maybe writing more than only six words.

Lord Brewood

As the saying goes 'form is temporary but class is permanent'. Make no mistake Kevin Doyle is a very good player & yes I agree he needs to score more goals but that is down the coaching and style of play and how we harness his ability to the team around him.

The merits of whether he is loyal or not is a moot point what matters is how we bring the best out of him.

I am confident that Stale can see the potential in Dolyer and if he applies his skills as a coach & manager effectively he will improve the quality of service to Doyle and we will see the real Doyler scoring goals and leading the line. This will be key to the progression of the Team this season.

Big respect to Doyle's choiche to remain with Wolves. Hope he could be completely fit quickly, 'cause the great part of our top flight come back will pass from his condition(and Karl Henry's one)!

How gutting to read some of the vitriolic crap posted here. Pathetic whingeing. Of course you whingers have experience of running a business and could do it better that Jezebel Moxey. You probably have more footballing experience than McCarthy had so could post your versions of how to do things having played for the Dog & Duck and look what happened when he went. The article didn't say bids came in it said he didn't ask to move away. If you can't say anything constructive then don't other cos real supporters don't want to hear your unsupported crap. I took the challenge and I reckon that in the fabulous slide from Div 1 to Div 4 we went from 1/12/84 until 26/10/85 playing 41 games with 4 wins. This started with a magnificent spell of 19 games during which we scored 5 goals and gained 5 points. However although technically we may be closing in on a record I think things have been somewhat worse. Particularly because (as Albion fans will be queuing up to mention) we had average gates of around 6000, 2 functioning stands (one falling down and one 50 yards from the pitch), owners who make Morgan look like Sheik Mansour (although Steve may be just better at milking the cash cow). I know you were stating an opinion about how the hierarchy have messed up,which is not really arguable, but lets keep the situation in perspective.

We'll never know whether this so called loyalty was actually a lack of bids. Only time will tell. Sounds like another JM bit of spin.

He's a proven goalscorer for club and country, Wherever he has been But you have to have a manager and play a system to his strengths ,Something that has hardly been done at his time at Molineux

Doyle should be given credit for trying to stay put and get wolves out of the mess that he has been partly responsible for.

Having said that no firm offers were made for him by the sound of it. Would have been interesting if Villa or Everton had, he may not want to leave but may have been pushed out by moxley.

Doyles career in the premiership with both reading and wolves is the same. He has one great first season then his form fades and his team gets relegated.

Nice to see your posts old pal.

We are going to need players like Doyle as we have several players unknown to this division.

This is a tough old league and some of our Championship experienced players need to wake up and get used to being back in a dog-fight.

WhereWolf?

No62 Well said.

How many commentators have spoken to Doyle about his feelings and can really claim to know what he thinks?

In the absence of such privileged first-hand knowledge why are so many 'fans' so cynical?

True, his form hasn't attracted any bids but he could still have asked to leave (he knows its affected his international chances) and had he asked to go, it might have triggered a bid or two. We'll never know.

What we do know is soon after relegation he said he wanted to honour his contract, and he's been true to his word. Of course Moxey's going to exploit this - any good news at this time needs to be exploited - but hopefully if he knows he has the backing of his employers, and of the fans Doyle will rediscover the form that made him so attractive to Wolves in the first place. Probably its to much to ask of some 'fans' to give him the benefit of the doubt and support him because he plays for our club.

angrywolf

Chillo Wolf 76...Grow up for goodness sake....

Kevin Doyle's loyalty to Wolves is just a load of old tosh...No club wanted him is closer to the truth, and a quality player- you are having a laugh.

We bought him and paid over the odds- Since being with Wolves he has disappointed and has failed to measure up. Not a prolific goal scorer by any means, ordinary and over rated.

To my mind he is no better or worse than Andy Keogh, and not in the shadow of Fletcher, a quality striker
