The assistant manager's long stay at Molineux came to an abrupt end yesterday afternoon following a brief meeting after training at Compton. And sources confirmed Solbakken made the decision over differences in footballing philosophy with Connor.

The decision is understood to be nothing to do with results, after one win from the first four games of the season left Wolves 19th in the Championship.

But 49-year-old Connor had appeared to become an increasingly marginalised figure since the Norwegian arrived, sitting impassively in the dugout during games this season.

Solbakken was holding a press conference this afternoon when he was expected to outline his reasons.

It is not known if he has anyone lined up to replace Connor, but it is understood current first-team coach Johan Lange may step up to become assistant manager.

Lange is Solbakken's only backroom appointment, having joined from FC Copenhagen at the end of June.

Connor was a popular figure with most Wolves players, who expressed their disappointment at his departure.

Captain Karl Henry said: "'TC' made a great contribution to Wolves and to me.

"His main quality as a coach was he made individual players better and played a big part in our successes of recent seasons.

"The manager has fresh ideas and has decided to go down a different route.

"But 'TC' will be missed and will be remembered for his achievements. "

Other Wolves players expressed their gratitude to Connor on Twitter.

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey tweeted: "Sad day 2day with Terry Conner (sic) leaving a top coach and a top bloke. Thanks for everything and all the best in the future."

Defender Ronald Zubar added: "good luck Mr Connor thank you for your contribution to the club."

Jody Craddock said: "Such a shame Tc has left the club, 13 loyal years, a fantastic knowledge of the game. Hopefully see him back in the coaching game soon."

Winger Matt Jarvis, who recently left Wolves for West Ham in a £10m deal, tweeted: "TC left wolves.... A fantastic coach n helped me a lot progressing my career! I'm sure he will get a great job soon!"
