If there is such a thing as the perfect farewell, Matt Jarvis managed it.

The popular winger hurried out of Molineux to make his West Ham debut at the weekend having earned praise from Wolves fans for the way he handled his transfer.

It was always an odds-on bet that the winger, with an England cap and a host of admirers to his credit, would cash in his Wolves career this summer to take a Premier League offer.

But the supporters he left behind appreciated the dignified exit which was completed without transfer requests or boat-rocking behind the scenes.

And it left the player eager to send a final message to supporters.

"It has been five great years for me and I will always remain really happy about my time at Wolves," says Jarvis.

"Winning the Championship title was obviously a major highlight and then we went on to have three good years in the Premier League as well.

"The fans have given me incredible support throughout that time and it has always been a real pleasure to play for them. I would also like to thank all the staff and the other players who have helped me so much to develop as a player and enjoy the success I have had.

"It was a massive honour for me to become the first Wolves player to represent England since Bully, and for that I am grateful for everyone at the club who played their part.

"I am leaving with some really fond memories of my time at Wolves and be looking on hoping the lads can have a successful season."

The loss of Jarvis removes from the team a genuine match-winner who would have been even more potent at Championship level.

But he hopes supporters understand the new turn in his career path which has taken him to West Ham.

"I gave everything I had in every game that I played," he said. "But at this stage of my career I wanted to stay in the Premier League.

"It also felt like time for a fresh challenge and I hope that the fans can understand that.

"I was the chairman's first signing for Wolves and he has been in touch with me thanking me for my efforts which was nice.

"Jez and the manager have also been good to me and I would like to thank them.

"I am ready now for a new chapter but I certainly won't forget the great times I have had at Wolves and wish everyone connected with the club all the best for the future."
