Boss Stale Solbakken today revealed his permanent Wolves captain will be announced before the Leeds game – but said his choice could be influenced by signings.
Karl Henry was set to lead out the team today as Wolves opened their season with a Capital One Cup first-round clash at home to Aldershot at Molineux this afternoon.
The 29-year-old midfielder has worn the armband whenever he’s been on the pitch under the new manager this summer.
But the Norwegian hinted his choice of skipper could be a new signing.
“The captain situation is this: Karl Henry will be captain today, but before the Leeds game we will have a captain of the team,” said the boss.
“However, that’s also to do with players coming and going. That’s why I want to postpone it.”
Former boss Mick McCarthy’s decision to appoint Roger Johnson, who he signed from Birmingham, as captain in place of Henry this time last year caused dressing room friction.
Asked if the captain would come from outside the club this time, Solbakken – who caused controversy by taking the armband off fans’ hero Lukas Podolski at Cologne last season, said: “Not necessarily, but it would be stupid to name a captain or vice captain when you don’t know what’s going on. I can’t write the script for September 3 (end of the transfer window.”
When asked that his selection of Henry to wear the armband wasn’t his final decision, Solbakken said: “I don’t think it’s a secret that Karl is a good alternative, but I’ve told everyone that before the Leeds game we hope to announce the main captain.”
