Wolves players warned over Twitter abuse
Wolves boss Stale Solbakken today laid down the law to his players in a crackdown over Twitter abuse.
Wolves boss Stale Solbakken today laid down the law to his players in a crackdown over Twitter abuse.
The Norwegian used his first in-depth meeting with the squad at their pre-season training camp in Ireland to warn them of the perils of abusing team-mates and opposition on the social networking site in a chat outlining what he expects from the players.
Several Wolves players – Jamie O’Hara, Steven Fletcher, Richard Stearman, Matt Jarvis, George Elokobi, Dave Edwards, Danny Batth and David Davis among them – are regular tweeters. Leigh Griffiths was left at home after tweeting the words “#cantbebothered” on the first day of pre-season training.
Solbakken followed predecessor Mick McCarthy, who invited a media law firm to Compton to warn players of the misuse of Twitter in the months after Greg Halford tweeted that transfer target Steve Sidwell was sitting in the Molineux directors’ box at the Chelsea game in January 2011.
Sidwell had been about to sign for Wolves from Villa and had undergone part of his medical, only to receive a call from then Fulham boss Mark Hughes and sign for them instead.
Now players have been warned again and Stearman emerged from the briefing to tweet: “Gaffers meeting then “twitter, dnt abuse teammates or opponents” jus got banta in intime haha @mrjamieohara @stevenfletch10 #luvyareallylads.”
Stearman had earlier exchanged light-hearted insults with Fletcher and O’Hara, on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Wolves today played down their chances of an early conclusion to the signing of Vadim Demidov.
The Real Sociedad defender held talks with chief executive Jez Moxey and his agent after flying in to England yesterday, and the clubs agreed a fee of around £1m.
But since then, other interest has hardened in the Norway international, with German club Eintracht Frankfurt now understood to be back in the race for his signature, plus other teams.
“It’s still ongoing at the moment,” Moxey told the Express & Star. “Hopefully we’ll have something to say in the next 24 to 48 hours, but it’s not as clear-cut as some people would like it to be. There’s interest in him from other clubs and we’re looking at other targets as well.”

No need to wait 24 to 48 hours for an announcement about Demidov, other reports claiming he's already signed for Frankfurt - but who knows...
At least Stale is keen to bring in a new centre back.

Greg Halford is an absolute tool. Horribly out of his depth in the Premiership, slow, poor in the air for a tall guy, can't tackle and his only attribute is a decent throw. League 1 for that arrogant fella next season and one of Micks worst purchases!
Looks like Vokes is next out and hopefully soon Griffiths, Berra, Hunt and Eggert will follow. If we can find a proper left back then Elokobi or Ward should be in the firing line.
Hoping that Demidov comes to us because of the SS factor!

Sounds like this Solbakken chap has his head screwed on and is clearly setting out the guidelines.

about time, part of the problem under "matey one of the lads mick" was the lack of authority, looks like stale is laying down the law early. Sums up the mentally of stearman really doesnt it?? have a meeting about tweeting so what does he do? tweets what a tool the sooner he and his frankly shocking defending is gone the better, lets hope we get this other guy sounds like just what we need, i have been vocal on here about roger the dodger but if he can get his head out of his ar*e and knuckle down i think he will do well for us next season.

TWITTER is and continue to be the downfall of many a player!
Brummie roader Ryan
What a load of nonsense.
Twitter is the only way fans get to interact wit the players nowadays.
And as for players "insulting" eachother, it's called "BANTER"
Solbakken Barmy Army
You can't deny that twitter can lead to very difficult and embarrassing situations as with the Ashley Cole and Ferdinand issues recently.
But with everything, power in the hands of those incapable of understanding it leads to corruption or rather twits using twitter leads to twitteruption?
I personally don't see the problem with the players having a bit of banter as I find it quite humorous and a way of getting to know the lads from a different perspective from looking in from the outside.
Tim
Brummie, in some cases it is banter, in others, it exceeds that. Some players can be prosecuted if their "banter" gets out of hand.

2...remind me, who bought Halford? Ahhh...yes

Sound and necessary message from Stale. Focus 100% on the football. If you want a perfect example of what a lot of old tosh is foisted on the world by Twitter, look no further than the pathetic drivellings of one Joey Barton.
Stale the Viking
About bloody time we now have a manager who knows his own mind says how it will be. If the players don't like it show them the door simple.Banter is one thing alerting other clubs of potential signings is another and the player who twittsthis should be fined.
Stale will get Molineux rocking again.

In other words someone blew the story to the Guess and Star too early and it alerted other clubs that Demidov is available for £1m.... plus the meeting with Moxey probably helped put him off. Well done whoever it was.

Why do people act like twits? coz they want to feel important!

6) Banter? Not so, when Ferdinand refers to Cole as a Choc Ice!
We have lost the centre half, so we better get scouting sharpish!

Leigh Griffiths what an idiot. '#cantbebothered', who does he think he is, Ronaldo? Sooner he's gone the better, will never make it at Wolves either. Get shut of Stearman, Elokobi, Edwards, Jonsson, Vokes, Griffiths & Winnall and then bring in a centre-back & left-back. Midfield containing Henry, O'Hara, Guedioura, Milijas & Davis should be fine for the Championship, as well as the strike force of Doyle, Fletcher, Sigurdarson, SEB & Nouble. UTW
We got solbakken the club
Never mind twitty or whatever they call it ,we could do with some of them media law blokes lookin on here. Some of the names they call me on the west bombich sites upset my nan that much she never went to bingo and I had to do my own beans on toast again. I was thinking of a bit of compo from the culprits but that would probably mean them havin yet another loan.
Agree with onerobbiedenison on this one and hope more proffesionalism enters the squad cos I don't think the gaffa will be entertaining messers. It won't matter who talks to the press, if you can't do it on the pitch your numbers up. What we might get though is players that have been poor playing to their full capacity due to the extra bit of pressure and not being a 'favorite' anymore. The fear of uncertainty has kept Man United the team to beat from the very first day Taggart walked in and in a very competitive league it could be that little extra that makes all the difference . Time will tell ,but I for one can't wait.

Extremely surprised that Twitter is an issue at all with footballers. Most of them dont have enough brain cells to be able to read and write in the first place!

@#13 im sure after a time off work most people can't be bothered to go back, leigh has clearly stated he wants to stay at wolves and likes the club but theres no place for him in the squad!
The real realist
Errr... didn't Mick say something similar about twitter last year ??
Unless it's in the plyers contract that they can't use it they are legally entitled to use social network sites as long as they don't break the law.
11- maybe people use twitter the same way they use web forums - to tell people stuff you mug !!
The real realist
14 - PLEASE stop with the "Au revoir our kid…" at the end of every post.
When you post as often as you do it's a pointless statement an although I know you think its great and you want it to be "your thing", when you are not addressing an indvidual or signing off the site for the day it just makes you look and sound a bit thick.
Shewolf
I agree with the poster about the fact that twitter is one of the few ways to interact with players these days.
Greg 'I am the best footballer ever' Halford, lost it for me when he tweeted that Wolves fans were bellends.
I think he has found his level!

These guys are highly paid and titled "professional footballers".
Can't they show some constraints and act like professional highly paid men. Not twittering kids.

good sensible manager...the name TWITTer says it all. utw,

I had forgotten what a waste of space Greg Halford is, I bet he's proud of his actions though. I wonder which big club he's at now !!!
Just Wondered!
Stale. I think you have your wires crossed somewhere. The only twits in this area are the ones that are down the road in Sandwell.
