Wolves must keep stars, says Karl Henry
Karl Henry today insisted Wolves can still convince their stars to stay – and repair the damaged team spirit in the process.
Karl Henry today insisted Wolves can still convince their stars to stay – and repair the damaged team spirit in the process.
Midfielder Henry believes the club could yet persuade players such as Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis to remain at Molineux by offering them improved contracts after the vast majority of players suffered wage cuts of up to 50 per cent following relegation.
Henry admitted the renowned commitment that once bound the players into a tight, battling unit completely unravelled in the chaos of the drop.
Dressing room squabbles and confrontations replaced unity as Wolves spiralled into a decline that saw Mick McCarthy sacked in February after the 5-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, then Terry Connor fail to win any of his 13 games in charge.
“It was evident that a lot of our success was built on team spirit and work ethic and it clearly wasn’t there last season,” said Henry.
“We’re not good enough to just turn up and win games with the quality of our football alone. But what got us through before was that we worked together and we were a unit.
“Once we lost that, we lost a large part of our positives as a team. We can definitely get it back, but everyone just needs to be on the same page. In order to do that, the club needs to look after players and keep the players they need to, because if we do, then we’ve got a great chance.
“It gives everyone in the squad a lift and sends out the signal that we want to get promoted as soon as possible. So I hope they do what they can to keep the players.
“If they start letting people go and the squad starts to disintegrate, then it’s going to be an even more difficult task.”
Henry believes the arrival of new boss Stale Solbakken signals a fresh start for all the players.
“With the new manager, I think it’s a clean slate for everyone,” he said.
“I don’t think anyone is burdened by the negativity from last season.
“People feel like it’s a fresh start, but my only concern is that we realise quickly that we’re a Championship club.
“The quicker we get out of that Premier League mode, the better.
“We just need to hit the ground running.”

That's it Stale.....we have found our Captain

And why wasn't the commitment there? You people are paid a king's ransom even after your pay has been cut so sorry only 100% commotment and loyalty is acceptable to those of us who fund your luxury lifestyle

Love him or hate him, what planet is King Henry on. (Paragraph 5), what quality football?????????????????????????????????? Did i miss something last year or what ???

'Stars' the same players that got us relegated from the prem?

Seem to remember that one of last seasons turning points was at home to the villa when we were dominating and somebody in a wolves shirt stupidly got sent off, who was that, we never recovered for the rest of the season, captain don't make me laugh.

You people are paid a king's ransom to perform even after your relegation pay cut so anything less than 100% commitment is totally unacceptable to those of us who help fund your luxury lifestyle, whatever your explanations and excuses.

Stalle is an intelligent guy and if he sees that RJ or any other individual is the cancer in the squad he will keep him away from the 1st team and try to remove him from the club ASAP.
No need to offer Jarvo or Fletch a pay rise, they haven't hinted that they want to leave and if the squad put right the wrongs they will be back on Premier League money within a year. Cut backs to the squad can be made by Hunt, Berra, Vokes, Eggert, Roger Johnson (on thin ice)and sending players on loan who are on the fringes.

Play Huddersfield away in the Npower championship with a ground half full on a cold wet Tuesday night with a 50% wage cut.
Or play the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal in the premier league with a full house with double the wages?
Hmmmmmmmmmm

Now it's sarting to come out. Did the 'troubles' begin before or after Mick left and was the main cause about Mr Johnson?
Mick was always bleeting about what a wonderful group of lads we had and at the time I thought that maybe he was going overboard on such comments.
If the club is serious about returning quick it should pay the 'stars' premership money and that's that. I don't think the others woul mind as they'll be collecting a lot more win bonuses with Jarvo and Fletch than without them.

y dont some of u so called wolvs fans let the manager do his job instead of u know alls maybe just maybe we the wolves might get somewhere let them who know what they are doing do it without moaning before season starts

Henry talks a lot of sense. The more top players that leave, the more that will want to follow them out of the door.
We have a massive squad which Stale wants to add to so surely we should look to lose many of the fringe players and focus on keeping the ones with the quality to get us straight back up (i.e. O'Hara, Kightly, Jarvis, Fletch).
On another note, I was disappointed to hear this morning that we look to have lost out on Demidov. But never mind, plenty more fish and all that!
Solbakken Barmy Army
Just imagine if we did keep all our players what our starting 11 would look like!
GK - Hennessey/ De Vries
LB - Ward/ Elokobi
RB - Zubar/Foley/Doherty/ Stearman
CB - Berra /Johnson /Mouyokolo /Batth /Demidov?
LM - Jarvis/ Forde/ Ismail?
RM - Kightly/ Hunt/ Hamill
CM - Henry/ Davis/ Milijas/ Edwards/ Guedioura /O'Hara
CF - Fletcher/ Doyle/ Ebanks-Blake/ Sigurdsson
Our obvious weakness would be LB, which in the Championship should be ok, but if we do get promoted is definitely a position we need to get someone in for.
vindaloopi
yes henry keep two players fletcher and jarvis, but the rest of them including you can all go cos you lot are not good enough thats why we went down and i for one will not renew my season ticket or wach wolves until your gone.

Another case of the blindingly obvious. Isn't it about time one of the playing staff from last season, accepted responsibility for the relegation mess? Wasn't it them who gave their whole-hearted support to TC before he went on to drag us down to the pit of relegation!
GreenWolf
"It was evident that a lot of our success was built on team spirit and work ethic and it clearly wasn’t there last season"
How right you are Karl - this article should be printed out and attached to the faces of a number of idle overpaid footballers who collectively contributed to our relegation last season.
And out of interest, if Wolves offer Fletch and Jarvis new contracts, is Henry's agent not going to be knocking on Stale's door??
Some laughable statements from a player that I have had very little time for since he asked how much he was going to get paid to present the end of season trophies at my Nephew's soccer school. Clearly he's after a pay rise - well if that's the case he'd better get working for it and help get us back into the Premiership.
Can't Wolves just put a lid on the same old obtuse press releases over the summer so we can forget about last season and its associated negativity and look towards the positives of a fresh start??
UTW and here's to Elland Road on 18 August (only four weeks on Saturday!!)

Same old, same old Karl henry, talking a good game! What about his little clique that threw there toys out of the pram because johson was made captain.Thats when the dressing room, pulling together STOPPED.People still calling for him to be captain, but your captain stays on the pitch, and doesnt do some thing reckless to get themselves sent off(Villa). There is far better midfielders at the club, than Karl the crab and his sideways or backwards football. Now the teacher, mad mick has gone all the pets will have to earn there place in the team, in stale we trust.

Team spirit is all about winning, keep losing and it gos out the window.Karl Henry for captain i say, biggest mistake MM made was giving it to Johnson.
Bunghoolioo Wolf
Karl's alright give him a break. We always looked far better defensively when he was in the team. He's a local lad and is clearly passionate about the Wolves and I for one think he's a decent and honest bloke. A limited footballer maybe, but not without his worth. The knockers need to calm down and adopt a more patient and pragmatic approach to next season. If we aren't top of the league and ten points clear by November...stay the course my brothers.
Vindaloopi you genuinely make me chuckle...you have given a million reasons on these posts over the last 4 months about why you won't renew your ticket until X has left, Moxey is gone, money is invested blah blah. How about you tell us under what very specific criteria you WILL renew and maybe we could all rally round to help. Which players are required to leave to make you come? Who needs to be manager? Who should be captain? Should we rebuild a stand? Should it be Carlsberg instead of Carling??? Please inform us!
UTW Forever.

This squad got us relegated. The price of that is lower wages. This looks to me like "joint action2 to have a payrise. Stalle should see this for what it is and get new players in who are happy with the pay rates.

Harsh words.
Love to see any of the drags get up there and get Wolves promoted straight away. You give all them lads stick and its a lot harder than you think to play those games.
Get behind them, each and every one of those players!
New Manager, new training scheme, new tactics. Wipe the slate clean and any negative comments and just get behind them. Wolves will be straight up with the right support.

no 4 henry didnt say our football was quality..he talked about the quality of the team s football..a Completely different point..he was in fact conceding that the team lacks quality ...

13. I think a new left back is needed for this season or at least give Hunt a chance to play there like he did for Reading (If he is not sold)although Wardy is good going forward he is dire defensively.
Your post shows that we have a really squad with some decent depth but players Berra, Vokes, Eggert and a few fringe players we should sell to keep the wage bill ready for aditions in January.

Too late to come out with the problems Karl you had your chance to prove your talent and stay in the Premiership; it’s like throwing good money after bad for us.
This time around let Moxey provide the money for a team that we think can compete at that level then we will come and watch it.
At no point did I think we had the talent to say up without investment, if Jarvo and Flech think they deserve Prem Status let them go and play with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.
Perhaps you all think you are better than you really are, prove it by putting right what you did wrong then we buy the season tickets.

Dressing room unrest is not all about Roger Johnson. Apparently there were problems with Hammill, Elokobi, Hunt, SEB etc? Karl Henry is no angel. He let us down badly at Wigan away - the season before last - and Villa at home. It is time to draw a line under it and move on. Stale, I suspect, will nip this in the bud!

best news to come from the captain for a long time yes we must keep the stars for a quick return to top flight ,ge your money on wolves at 8/1

Well said Karl and finally an admission from WW that their was dressing room disunity. NOW LET US SPEAK ABOUT THIS. Let us have it all out in the open and not do a brush under the carpet job. Be straight , open and honest about the debacle of last year and then we will have a degree of unity. One error Karl....."star players".............sorry mate, we have none! Last season, you were all rubbish and you all (bar Hennessey) let yourselves and the club down badly. Most fans will not cry if you all leave because you disgraced the shirt. Now let us see you all respond.

Karl talks a lot of common sense when he says that we must retain our quality players to mount a realistic chance of reurning to the prem. What doesnt fill me with confidence is money grabbing Moxey who doesnt care about the football just the bank balance.
bloxwichwolves
I seriously do not think Johnson is the only cause of the troubles, I have a friend who knows zubars bank manager and apparently zubar said he causes arguments and will take a dig at all the players for no reason but ohara came out on twitter and defended him. even if Johnson went I cannot see it being solved but it's a start

Totally agree with previous comments about the new Wolves website.
The cynical double spacing of text and use of multiple sub-pages to increase ad impressions and hence revenue leaves me cold and I won't be back any time soon.
Karl, you lost me when you started talking about improved contracts. You should all have a larger element of performance related pay. That way we would have either seen performances that kept us in the PL last season or retained an extra few million in the bank.
Keep the good work up, Ståle.

Same old, same old Karl henry talking a good game.Wasnt it him and his clique that threw their toys out of the pram when Johnson was made cptain.Wasnt it down to him and his clique there was a devide in the dressing room.CAPTAIN ??? He has had his chance, and your captain stays on the pitch when you need his, not get sent off because of a reckless and stupid challenge, Villa. There is far better midfielders at the club than Karl the crab Henry, always going sideways or backwards.
The Flying Winger
Why are we even still talking about last season, those players who let us down should be moved on.
The ones that McCarthy gave no chance to should get their opportunity in the team.
Get some new signings in, ship out the others and let's get on with it.
I hope we are not getting back into these articles from players, as we had last season.
Henry was as culpable as the others and needs to be moved on.
I also see Edwards is starting to comment again, another of the favourites who is not good enough and injury prone.
chris hoggard
We have failed, because we seem unable to compete in the transfer market when other clubs are also interested.Looks like we have missed out Demidov, just like we missed out on Dann,Gardner,Moses and young McCarthy in years gone by.Better players are generally wanted by other clubs and we tend to miss out.We then end up with second or third choice targets and they come cheaper but lack quality .It has been going on for years. That is the main reason we have failed to establish ourselves in the Prem.Previous managers have identified good players, but with a few exceptions, such as Fletcher, we have failed when it comes to closing out deals.
ThaiWolf
A young & hungry team which was united. That was how we started out 2011. Then things went wrong, but the dressing room was still united. Then we lost 1-5 to Tescos and the dressing room unity disintigrated. And rightly so. The team knew this loss was the proverbial straw. Not just a defeat but humiliation. I'm the only Wolves supporter in my family of 10 and even the Baggies season ticket holders were too embarrassed to take the piss. Losing by 1, 2 or 3 goals leaves you open to verbal abuse and ridicule, quite rightly, but 1-5?? too much.
Karl Henry tried too hard to make up for the deficiencies in the rest of the team. So he plays the ball sideways, so what! His task was to disrupt opposition play when they had the ball, to win the ball back then pass to a team mate with vision to create attacking play, Milias was (is) good at that. Henry doesn't have a creative, attacking football brain, but he's a bloody good captain! He's like the old stick of Blackpool rock. Chop of his head and you will see WOLVES written right down to his ankles. Give him support for what he's good at. Don't condem him for trying too hard.

Everyone saying "this is the squad that relegated us, sack the lot" and "not renewing season tickets till this squad is gone" seem to forget this squad promoted us in the first place!

PLayers like Jarvis & Fletcher need to play in the Premier.Kevin Doyle would be an asset for a premiership team. Before Wolves can move forward they need to get rid of the deadwood. It seems to become more apparent that this is not going to happen.Wolves are just going to find out the hard way.
Farmer Ted
What does KH mean by offer them new contracts? Pay them more for helping to take us down? Ignore relegation clauses? Remember Wolfhound(27 Moxey now has to balance the books on Championship income whatever you choose to say about him. What do the rest of the players , both existing and new , say about the imbalance. ...and some on here talk about dressing room harmony !
Finally would you work for 50% less?
If they decide to go Jarvis, Fletcher and co. isn't the end of the world

Well done to every 1 who thinks no 1 should have an oppinion, what boring time we would have.
well im gunna have my say. carl henry is not good enough for the prem but on his showing in the championship was good enough.
No the players shouldnt get a pay rise its what they sighned on for and new all about the wage cut. if they want it back work for it or go if your wanted. they would be off like a bat out of hell if a prem team came calling, but they aint so tuff.
I for 1 is fed up with watching players not trying but being paid a fortune. but because this is my team and its my blood i will be there.

Looks to me the unrest in the dressing room started when a quality defender was bought in and it upset the family lets hope Stale can see this and gets another good centre back to play along side him come on Roger prove all the critics wrong.

if swansea and norwich can keep and pass the ball why can't we have a team that do the same instead of chasing it for 90 minutes.

The lack of team spirit second half of the season is the reason we got relegated, we were dire!!!
But all that is done now, we must learn from it & move on, as do some of the posters on here, guys we can't change anything, so we may as well forget & move on, I'm looking forward to the new season to see what difference Solbakken brings, hopefully a new centre half & left back!!!!

Farmer Ted, I posted on here the other week that they should incentivise players such as Jarvis and Fletcher to keep them.Offer a bonus conditional on getting promotion. You say Moxey has to balance the books, but they have made profits for last two years posted. The best way of balancing the books is to get promotion and best way to get promotion is to keep our best players. The danger is we will go on a downward spiral if we sell and don't adequately replace Jarvis and Fletcher.
