Jody Craddock’s Wolves future in the balance
Jody Craddock’s Wolves career was today hanging in the balance after he missed out on the pre-season trip to Ireland.
Jody Craddock’s Wolves career was today hanging in the balance after he missed out on the pre-season trip to Ireland.
The evergreen defender, who turns 37 later this month, was told yesterday by manager Stale Solbakken that he is unlikely to figure next season.
But such is the respect and esteem in which he is held at the club, discussions are set to take place with chief executive Jez Moxey over the next few days as to whether Wolves’ longest-serving player can stay on for another campaign and qualify for a testimonial.
Craddock, whose one-year deal expired on June 30, is attempting to win a 10th year at the club and was hoping to be included in the squad for the six-day training camp in Ireland leaving on Monday. But it is understood he was called in by Solbakken after yesterday’s morning training session to be told the news.
The announcement suggests Craddock is on the home straight of a memorable Molineux spell that has seen him play 237 games for the club, scoring 17 goals, after Dave Jones snapped him up from Sunderland for £1.75m in July 2003.
Craddock suffered relegation from the Premier League in his first season at Molineux and took a while to be accepted by fans.
But he soon won them over and was joint captain with Karl Henry when Wolves won the Championship title in 2008-09 and voted Player of the Year the following season as the club stayed up.
Injuries restricted his Premier League action to one game last term – a 2-1 win against his previous club Sunderland in December – as he battled a long-term hamstring complaint.
In a club statement issued today, Solbakken said: “I’ve spoken to Jody and explained the situation after he asked how things were looking.
“We already have a number of central defenders battling for positions, and I’m also looking to bring in another.
“Jody won’t be joining us in Ireland. However, this doesn’t mean the door is completely closed and the club will continue discussions with him.”
Craddock said: “The manager has been straight with me and told me how it is.
“There’s an opportunity now to consider my position, which could still include remaining with Wolves if all parties agree.”
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “He’s been a consummate professional. The club will now sit down and talk to him in more detail about his future.”

I like Jody as a player and as a genuine bloke (very talented artist!) he seems a nice type. BUT he is 37.
SteveCWD
I don't think any manager should be offering players contracts out of a sense of sentimentality and so I find it hard to criticise Solbakken for this when it seems he's taken a very pragmatic view of the situation.
However (and I'm contradicting myself a bit here), it would be wonderful to think that the club can find a role for Jody, perhaps in a player-coach capacity. As Moxey says, he really is the "consummate professional" and his value as a role model to the young players coming through shouldn't be underestimated.
There's only one Jody Craddock...

Good luck jody, proper bloke, proper professional

At 37 he's still better than the circus double act we had in most of last year!! Great pro though, all the best for the future jody. C'mon mick the ring master take a job and come back for your clown's !!!!

Unlike many footballer's Jody has actually thought about what he will do after football and has developed quite a respectful art career. He also has the opportunity here to spend more time with his family though a difficult time. Sad not to see him playing much more but it has to happen some day.
Wolves most loyal and respectful player since Steve Bull and myself and many other fans are very grateful for how you've helped the club over the past few years.
I would also have a lot more respect for Moxey if he offers Jody another contract despite it being unlikely for him to play just so he can have a testimonial. He deserves it.
BlueWolf
They kept up with Murray for 10 years they can do the same for Jody, much more deserving of a testimonial match.
(I take nothing away from Murray - he was a great keeper and he was injured but having a testimonial after only playing 100 games was a bit of a joke)

Could the board and the manager offer jody a player/coach role?

I Hope Stale proves me wrong but I think it was a mistake to appoint him.
I think someone who knows English football would of been both a safer and more sensible bet.
The club needed a whole sale clear out. I would of immediately shown the door to at least 15 players on our books. Unfortunately, Stale is working blind and is having to look at every player individually. This means we are weeks if not months behind every other club.
In addition, both Forest and Leicester have big money backers and Blackburn and Bolton will also be formidable as will a few of the other teams, the likes of Leeds will be interesting for instance.
My own opinion is Wolves won't get promoted next year.
The biggest problem the club has is Moxey. I've said it before and will say it again. As long as he is here the clubs ambitions are limited to making a profit. That might be admirable but it also lacks ambition on the footballing side of things.
Moxey isn't a risk taker. He's proved that. That's why Mick was at the club so long when it was patently obvious he wasn't cutting the mustard at premiership level.
I've got my tickets for next year, but I feel it's going to be play off heartache for this club, yet again.
I honestly can't see the club moving forward under Moxey and Morgan. The ambition isn't there and nor is the money.
Morgan has proved he's not prepared to risk any of his money. Yes, he bought the club and invested his cash. But he invested in bricks and mortar, and that's a safe bet to get your money back when the time comes to move on.
Albrightondek
I'm sure there will be mixed views posted about the above news. But for me Staale is right to think about the future.
At best, Craddock should only be kept as an emergency defender in the event of injuries. He has been overall a good servant for Wolves, but sentimentality won't win promotion.
Pleased to see that Staale has again confirmed his priority to bring in another central defender.
Tomwolf
No3 Neverpost. I would just like to endorse your comment, and add one thing 'Loyalty' and thats whats Jody as shown over the last 9yrs, i fear after Steve Bull, Jody will be the last player to show it.
Ghost of Doog
Could he not be given a 1 year contract and then play with th youngsters with a view of becoming defensive coach, as Steve Bould has done at Arsenal?
Gerry Mannion
You have to give credit to Stale Solbakken in that he is shaking things up a bit. No sentiment shown for anything or anyone.
Perhaps this is exactly what Steve Morgan wanted when he pinpointed the guy for the job in the first place.
Hard headed, fair, hopefully no favourites and a coach with an unblinkered unbiased view of how to adapt play for differing circumstances.
This is all very good as long as it works out, but then that is what he is paid for and I am sure he is very well paid.
If it all comes good every penny he earns will be worth it.
From day one he has made it clear that no one player has the right to expect a free ride. That itself is a step in the right direction.
Good luck to him and I hope for all of us that it works out.
PeteNuts
So the door's not completely closed to him... but he's not coming on the pre-season tour? That sounds like, at the very least, being locked out in the rain for a whole weekend.

Defensive coach would be ideal

We have had a habit of stifling young talent at Wolves and now is the time to plan for the future. We need to put Danny Batth straight in and see how he does - he will either sink or swim (no pun int). I think he'll excel. Same goes for the likes of Matt Doherty, David Davis, Jamie Reckord, Jake Cassidy etc. It's a young man's game now - bring 'em through I say. UTW

There isn't a better CH at the club. That maybe has a lot to say about them more than a 37 yr old Jody, but i'd rather keep him and lose a few of the others. Jody perhaps lacks the pace for the Prem, but with the muck and nettles of the Championship, would any of the others put there head in where it hurts?
Ill leave the team building to the boss, but we have not had a better CH than Joleon and Jody for a long, long time. Desepratly needs addressing.
Thanks Jody. . .he used to be. . .but now he's allright!
chris hoggard
Hope he stays on,but I am sure he can still do a good job for someone at Championship level.I read somewhere that lots of clubs in the Championship are looking for a centre back, such as Derby. When you stop playing it is gone forever and I think Jody should consider playing somewhere else.He reads the game so well, just a question of avoiding hamstring problems.Anyway, what an excellent centre back he has been for us.Unlike so many other players on our books,Jody owes us nothing.
AwayWolf
Jody can still play ... in the league Cup, FA Cup, and perhaps as a sub in some league games when we have injuries or suspensions to other players.
So, while he may be into his late 30s, that does not mean he is finished as a player. When I was that old, and nowhere near as fit as Jody, I could manage a 20+ mile day-long hike over some very demanding terrain. Therefore, I've no doubt that Jody can still manage at least 45 minutes for us when needed.
Let's also accept that when we are commanding games against much weaker opposition, he'll hardly be having to run his socks off, will he?
J♣ck the Hat.
In these times loyalty is special, so come on wolves give him special dispensation like he has been special to the club.

It will be interesting to see how the conflicting views within the club compromise on this one. Maybe give Jody another 12 month contract and
a) work/play with the academy lads and be used in an emergency for the first team, (although I seem to remember Jody saying he didn't want to be involved in coaching or management).
b)Loan him to a local Club like Walsall or Kidderminster.
c)Give him a NINE year testimonial (or is that against some Blatter Platini by-law ?)
Stale has studied the situation and at 37 years of age has decided Jody is not part of the new campaign.
Whatever, good luck Jody.
One more thing. Everybody go back and read 12 Richwol64 one more time.
Just unbelievable.
Yes Mr 5% is back on line. Sure it's his opinion and he's entitled to give it, but, does this Brain of Britain EVER say anything positive about our Club.

Surely there must be a role for him to play? good player, pro, and clearly a top man. Shining example to all the kids. If we can't find a productive role for this guy there is something wrong. No problem with the football decision as long as clowns like stearman don't play. A 37yo Craddock a better option than that.
Billywiseman

Jody as given his all for our club im sure he could do a job say in league one.

On second thoughts he could do a job for the boggies like replacing ollsen who wants away as he can see they are going DOWN.

Not entirely unexpected given the situation but if ever a player deserved a sentimental contract for a season to get his testimonial as a player/coach then Jody is it. He is the sort of player that we should keep on as a development assistant at the academy, maybe passing on the right way to be a professional footballer to the up and coming kids. Jody would be one of very few recent Wolves players I would travel the 12,000 miles to see his testimonial.
Leon
If Stearman was left behind it would make more sense.. Even at 37 I would rather give craddock a chance than the blumbering stearman..
britwolfuk
These days he could be classed as one of a type - loyal and not an ounce of an administrative burden. He's really only let down by his pace, as his tactical ability is pretty sound. Whilst I wouldn't advocate 'wasting' a squad place (are we actually limited to numbers in the Championship?)in the bigger scheme of things, surely we could pay him for another year, let him qualify for his (deserved) testimonial and more importantly give him another 12 months security and relative peace of mind while his son continues to undergo his treatment in Birmingham Children's Hospital (or wherever the lad is being treated locally).
I suppose I'm coming down on the sentimental side but sometimes exceptions are warranted.
jody is the man
get jody on the coaching staff, simples !
The real realist
All those saying he is a risk or too old and should be moved on are probably the same sheep bleating that Jarvis and Fetcher owe us some loyalty.
The guy is one season off his testimonial - who do you think will be the next player to do 10 years here (other than Ward of course).
Loyalty works both ways - something us wolves fans fail to remember on a reguar basis with the constant critisisn of players, managers and board year after year.
Pa wolves
Whatever happens, he's been a credit to the club, a rare modest and truly professional footballer in this day and age of over inflated egos. It's been a pleasure to watch him play for us.

I dont have a lot of time for moxley and morgan but I do like the way they repay loyalty.
They will sort something out for Jody as they have for TC who they could have sacked at the end of last season.
stale must bring in another central defender, and try to get Johnson's head right. Craddock imv is a better defender than the rest we got.
He played one game last season and our defensive problems in that game started when he had to come off with an injury.
john O'Brennan
Jody is the most committed Wolves player since Bully, I agree that we need a cull and new defenders and Jody probably will not play anyway but surely he should be offered a coaching/ambassadorial role so we keep his influence at the club and give him what he deserves, a testimonial.

You are assuming that he sees it as a risk. I don't think he does.

Jody should be given a final years contract, he deserves at least that after his loyalty and hard work for the club, he will then get his well deserved testimonial and hopefully after his contract expires will be given the option to take up a non player role at the club, a true pro and gentleman.
Old Golds Worth More
We could do with a new defensive coach, and as someone who has "been there, done that and got the Tee-shirt" we could do a lot worse then give Jody a stab at the job, plus keep him on the books as a player just in case. If it doesn't work out after a year, then he will still have qualified for a well deserved testimonial.

It's very sad that for a so called Wolves supporter, you have to change the subject and be negative regarding an excellent article concening the dilema that the club faces with how to deal with Jody.
All the other comments are realistic and supportive of a loyal and trusted player.
You are entitled to your oppinion, but Wolves's problems last season were, IMO caused as much through the 3 Ms as with the 3Bs (Boring Boo Boys) They contributed massively to the deterioration of morale last year and are now doing their best to undermine morale this year.
Time for the 3Bs to change clubs?

Wolves are top heavy with players - about 15 at a guess. If Griffiths and Craddock are part of that number, so be it. I'm sure the hierarchy have enough collective nous to find a way to reward a loyal servant who, as some have pointed out, is a role model for any youngster.
Ståle Solbakker is the one having to muck out the bull shed, so if things don't suit everyone, maybe they should have shouted out when the shed was getting into such a mess!
Coming in on budget is good, but only if the budget is appropriate. The evidence suggests to me the budget has been more than adequate, but not wisely used. Little wonder Steve Morgan bristles when he's told to invest more in players, but after all, he should have been asking for evidence of Value For Money as well as budgetary compliance. I'd bet Ståle will be required to provide just that, and rightly so!

I feared this might happen and as much as i have the greatest of respect for Jody as a player (he has certainly proven every Wolves fan wrong over the years) and as a bloke - but the reality is that he is 37 and most likely not up to speed... However, I don't think as a club we should be wasting the experience we have in Jody - and i believe we could do far worse than to bring him in as a full-time defensive coach!! We sure as hell need it after last season.
It's no coincidence over the years that whenever we have been leaking goals and have bought Jody back into the side we suddenly stop conceding so many stupid goals.

richwolf64, i agree with most of your post, but in my opinion appointing stale was the right thing to do because wwfc have failed with british managers season after season apart from the odd season. yes morgan has taken a risk but untill the season gets under way, no one will know if that risk has paid off.

At 37, incredibly he is still our best central defender - which really says something about the state of our back line.
Great servant, lovely guy and a pretty good player too. So deserving of a testimonial - can it not be done after 9 years if the club decide to?
I would have liked to see him get a role in coaching at the club but I gather that's not the way he wants to go. Can't blame him with the talent he has as an artist!
I can understand the decision and hopefully Stale will bring someone in who can shore things up and make it all irrelevant - maybe to play alongside Danny Batth.

Isn't football crazy, get rid of Jody, keep that thing from birmingham.
However I think the manager is right, he must plan for the future.

Would like to see Jody given another year if only as back up but you have to respect the managers decision as he seems like someone who won't let sentiment cloud his judgement.
So long as it applies to everyone then that's fair enough. Maybe he can cover for RJ for Monday morning training as he does'nt get home till about four in the morning.
Anyway i will save any plaudits towards Jody until it becomes official that this is the end of his time at the club.

Personally I believe we should keep Jody Craddock and get rid of Richwolf64.
Craddock - a good, positive role model for everyone else at the club.
Richwolf64 - a whining, negative boo boy who is always ready to say "I told you so" (as he does on post 46 above). The point is he will always be right because if he continually says the worst will happen and it happens he will crow loudly about how smart he is. If the worst doesn't happen then he won't say a word.
Yes, I'd prefer to keep Jody.

46)You have not been proved right, as McCarthy was not here at the death. TC achieved only 4 points in a third of a season and there is no doubt in my mind that Mad Mick would have done far better than that.
I totally disagree with you on where Wolves will finish and praising up the other clubs. It is a very hard call at present - not knowing whether we will sell Fletcher and Jarvis and what new faces will be coming in? Irrespective, Stale has a good pedigree and I can see top 6 as an absolute minimum!

Look there is no rOom for sentiment in football. He is 37! 37! We need to have faith with the youth or get in some new blood. If we kept him on he could be turned out inside out by young striker and his last season at wolves could be a nightmare. There has been a constant stream of negative posts from you for a number of seasons. Seasons when Mick McCarthy finally got us promoted and seasons when he DID keep us in the Premiership to become the most successful manager since Bill McGarry.
Considering the average 'lifespan' of a manager is less than 3 seasons (unless your Chelsea when its considerably less), even a buffoon like you was eventually going to be right !!
Here we are on the brink of a new season, with a new manager who has yet to reveal his plans and already you've started on him. Like others have said on this thread, give it a rest and at least wait until there's something to praise or criticise.
Finally even your reference to my sobrique shows your complete lack of understanding when it comes to Wolves.

RichWolf64 - Once again you prove how much of an idiot you are. You say you were right in claiming we would go down but you are clearly lying. The first two seasons we survived you claimed we would be relegated and were proven wrong both times. Then in the third season when people called you out on your previous predictions you went ahead and claimed that we would in fact survive in our third season but by the skin of our teeth, so you were wrong once again. I think its pretty obvious we could all make a few pounds off of you by placing a few bets based on the complete opposite of your predictions.
To clarify my position, I have no problem with people making predictions on where they think a team will finish, whether I agree with said predictions or not, but I genuinely believe you are a complete moron, and a pathetic excuse for a fan when you try and come out and gloat about being the football equivalent of Nostradamus, when in fact, all 3 of our premier league seasons you were proven as inept at predicting league positions as you are at supporting this club.

if jody isnt good enough then berra and stearman must be out the door soon as well as u will struggle 2 find 2 worse defenders

Johnwolf, I totally agree with your comments re Mick McCarthy, but yes there are a lot of vindictive and needless comments above aimed at Rich Wolf 64 and from people whose comments on here I usually respect. It would be suffice to say we all hope he is wrong.Equally there is a rationality in some of his comments. No matter how you dress it up we struggle to attract quality footballers whilst Jez Moxey does the negotiating. That is a reality and has resulted in the club we all love struggle to re establish itself amongst the top tier of English football.I agree we need to start afresh, but with our eyes wide open,no more blind faith stuff, please.

I think that it would be mean not to give Jody a testimonial.I never really rated him though i agree with No.4.Sedgeley Wolves.I like the suggestion to give him another year and then loan him out.I'm sure that he would be useful to one of the lower diviision teams.

Maybe jody does not want to go
on tour with his son seriously ill?

Jody is our best defender so wrong decision for me.

Some decent points made above.
Craddock has been a superb pro & a good player for us over the last 9 or so years.
But all good things come to an end, Jody was fit to play just one game last season, in which he had to come off with an injury, that says it all.
But in this game if you stand still, you go backwards, as we should all be aware from last season.
We need to take off the rose tinted spectacles & Jody should retire & persue his career in art.
Not sure if he's a legend but he's been a decent player for us & will always be fondly remembered.
Back the managers judgement
Keep the faith

I wonder if Staale has been made aware of the two Norwegian twin defenders Tom & Kim Skogsrud who have refused to transfer their contracts at Rangers.
One is a left back and the other is central defender. If they are any good, we could kill two birds with one stone - and there wuold be no tranfer fee involved.

This is a crazy decision. Looking at the Premier League Player Performance Index for last season, not only was Jody our best defender per minute he was on the pitch he was the best player in the entire squad!! Only Jarvis came anywhere near him in terms of performance and if you're good enough you're young enough!

TOP BLOKE WOLVES SHOULD OFFER HIM A PLACE ON COACHING TEAM AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SON

Yes Jody Craddock is 37 but there are still premership and chapionship footballers who are older then him and still play.

I was merely expressing my opinion that I didn't think Wolves would get promoted this coming season. I didn't attack anyone, didn't hurl any abuse at any, was merely expressing an opinion.
If you read post 12 I think you'll see I didn't attack any poster on here.
Tha amusing thing is, I get called a bigot for expressing them! The irony of it.
And then, I get home to read that Stale is saying pretty much the same thing, that it's going to be very tough to get out of this division this year!!
ashmore wolves
keep jody as back up get rid off the rest of the defence!
john doe
time to get rid

Are you for real????
He didn't complete 90 minutes all season.
He played once.
Which assuming he was on only £10k per week (excuse the phrase, only, but that is nothing in the prem)cost us more than half a million pounds to play in one game.
You do the maths!!!!

How many times I have read & listened to fans, including Wolves fans, expressing their disgust at players not being loyal to their clubs. Here we have a player who has been loyal to his club for nine years. Don't you think the club should show some loyalty to him so that he can have the benefit of a testimonial? C'mon Wolves fans, he has given you nine good years, you can at least give him one! Where is your loyalty to your players?

My last post was in response to no 99.
