Roger Johnson offered a fresh start at Wolves
Boss Stale Solbakken today offered Roger Johnson an olive branch and the chance to prove himself at Wolves again.
Boss Stale Solbakken today offered Roger Johnson an olive branch and the chance to prove himself at Wolves again.
Johnson had been expected to leave after a disastrous campaign which saw him disciplined for turning up to train showing the effects of alcohol, dropped by Terry Connor and suffer a second successive relegation.
Wolves are prepared to sell the former Birmingham defender but there has been no interest in the player they paid £4m for last summer.
The Norwegian has identified a dominant centre-back as a priority as he prepares for an assault on the Championship.
But he is prepared to wipe the slate clean with Johnson however, and hand the 29-year-old a fresh chance – if he’s prepared to “fight” for the Wolves cause.
“I don’t know him any more than anyone else, so everyone has a chance to fight for a place and put things behind them,” said Solbakken.
“I’ve heard some stories but I don’t place too much value on them.
“We will see what happens. It’s up to him – if he wants to fight for Wolves and have his ‘revenge’, then that’s a possibility.”
Solbakken faces the prospect of assessing a 50-strong squad of professionals, around a third of whom reported back today for physical tests.
Training
And the new boss stressed he will be working with a much smaller number of players.
“I’m not here to keep everyone happy – on a normal training day, I want 22 or 23 players on the training ground,” he said. “The others will be training with the second team, although we will rotate a little bit.”
Solbakken revealed he won’t get to see Stephen Ward, Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt until after the trip to Ireland from July 16-21 following their participation in Euro 2012.
“The Irish guys are coming in after the training camp,” he said.
Homegrown players such as Danny Batth, who enjoyed promotion at Sheffield Wednesday, and Anthony Forde, face a breakthrough season after impressing last term.
Solbakken said: “I will not pick players based on age or what happened last season.
“Now it’s a case of trying to pick the right team.”

Perfectly reasonable attitude for Staale to adopt with regard to Johnson, but I can't help feeling it will end in tears.

think we all know the problems with RJ and the fans so lets not go into depth here...
if RJ was to stay he is a very capable cb at this level and is still the best (when trying) at the club.
if he stayed on and performed i can see him winning over the fans and being a fans favourite by this time next year.
problem is RJ himself, he has poor attitude as we know and if he doesnt change his TOP DOG attitude he's cooked for!

This is the news I have been waiting for all summer! Prove all the morons wrong Rog, I've got faith in ya.
No doubt there will now be a lot of moaning!
Everyone just get behind ya team an stop moaning for a season

johnson should never play for wolves again he is a disgrace to be called a footballer,a disgrace to be named a once captain of wolves,a disgrace to football in general, no second chances once a rotten apple always a rotten apple, and to all those 'do gooders' who are going to type 'give him a second chance' if you were itk you wouldnt say it, he is an overpaid useless footballer fact !
Finchley Wolves
in my humble opinion, i think this is great news. i would have done the same. . . .
we need a good defender, oh RJ is one, no brainer. its not personal - its business and if he can do the business then he should do the business.
why are we going to waste money we have spent on him. he is a premium player!
Sam Hathaway
Sounds like stale knows what he's doing. I think it's worth giving roger another chane if he sorts his attitude out. He's a good defender at championship level and he can win the fans back with some good performances. Nice to see stale also mentioning that he will not pick the team based on last season but picking the right team from now on. I know under mick there was a lot of questions asksed on whether he was picking his favourites so it will be freshing to see if he actually picks the best team and plays the right players in the right positions.
vindaloopi
johnson is completely useless and ive got a feeling that stale aint going to be here long specially if he gives ward another chance so glad i never had another season ticket
Goldenwolf
The positive thing is we have alot of Academy players around the squad now.
I have read that the club have already informed the following 1st team squad players that they can leave: Berra, Johnson, Vokes, Elokobi and Stephen Hunt. The club have apparently offered new deals to Addy and Kites.
I think an intelligent football man like Stalle will see that we have a Premier League midfield and Strike force but we have MAJOR issues at the back! I am keen to see whether Mouyokolo and Batth get a chance and if Zubar plays in the middle. Rumour has it that he has already identified a left back.
Buzzing for the new season! WE ARE WOLVES!

Wolves are on the up at the moment we dont need players like him screwing it up.

It's not just about Roger Johnson, it's about the players around him and how they feel about his possible place in the team.
Once psychological harm has been done, then it takes a lot to repair the damage. He has to win their confidence, not just the manager's.
So! Will his teammates trust him to do a good job? If he has one bad game, can he then be relied upon for future matches?
If he is chosen to play again, it will be one big gamble. He really needs to impress on a regular basis - because his teammates will be looking for solid, commanding and trustworthy perfomances.
Anything less than that not be acceptable.
IanTheLichfieldWolf
I think there's wisdom in this. We have a player who has proven in past seasons that he can be a class act at Championship level.
With a new manager in charge why not give him a chance to show Stale that he can regain that form. It's not like there are any takers for his services at the moment.
IF he can sort his attitude
IF he re-discovers his form
...and IF the players are prepared to give him a second chance - then we have one of the best central defenders in the Championship and an experienced partner for Danny Batth maybe?
If he doesn't take his opportunity then we've lost nothing more and he gets shipped out. Up to you now Roger....
JJ
I think its a wise choice to see how Johnson goes. If we can get him to be the player he was supposed to be then that's 1 less player we have to sign.
He needs to be on the ball straight away to have any chance of regaining the respect of the fans however. Don't forget the fans angrily turned on Keogh who never did anything wrong. This guy has had arguments with players on the pitch, turned up for training drunk, his wife has had a go at the manager on twitter and he ignore Wolves fans and applauded Wigan fans on the last game. Not to mention whatever else has gone on behind the scenes that we don't know about. He's got a long road ahead of him.
Long term wolf
Having seen Johnson have a go at his own goal keeper having failed to deal with a standard headed clearance - it went sidewards !, was central to the Birmingham city implosion two years a go and has been instrumental in the demise of Wolves from the prem. I am sorry Stale this man has to go for me - one of the worst signings in years.

Everyone deserves a second chance, I hope Roger takes it.

Message to Stale - we do not want him at our Club as whilst we understand the 'clean slate' approach you are taking we do not feel the same way about someone who showed our Club and our supporters nothing at all last season other than disdain and contempt. Farm him out or sell him please!

Watching all the horror video's will not properly prepare Solbakken, the real enormity of the task will be realised when the players resume for training!!!
Northern Wolf
Just being pragmatic - if no-one wants him and we can't afford anyone else whilst he is on £40k per week, might as well give it a go. Like to be in a position where we could afford to do a John de Wolf and sit him at home whilst his contract runs down, but I think someone agreed to pay him £2m a year for 4 years with no relegation clause. Now that was playing hardball, eh Jez?

So we are stuck with him and the rest of the sub standard bunch who got us battered and relegated last season.
I know the club has to put positive spin on things (again) but every fan knows that this lot aint good enough for auto prmotion and when Fletch an Javo leave we will be lucky to make top 6. Its very disapponting to hear the manager spouting out Moxey's clap trap already !!!!
Every club knows our players are over priced under achievers and we won't get the sort of money we need to overhaul the playing staff and any money that we do get will go into property development - its a sad but true state of our club.
Wolf At Gate
Well Said Stale !
I am beginning to like this guys outlook and style already, just hope we can keep Fletch & Jarvis !
RichWolf64
All sounds good. You need a left back desperately however and a decent midfielder as well as your centre half.
Three players and you've got a decent team. I would be amazed if you don't strenghten the left back position despite the E&S's love in with Ward.
PJB
Oh what joy for Ward, Henty & Co. if RJ returns!
The real realist
Just read Tim Nash's piece on Stale - I think it's fair to say our Tim is quite taken with Stale - I thought i was reading a Mills and Boon novel and was half expecting Stale to tear off his blue shirt and show a rippled chest...... do we really need to know about his tan shorts and tanned body ??
Come on - man up Tim !!!
Whacker51
I for one would definitely give him another chance... We all make mistakes he made a few but if he puts his hands up accepts he was wrong we all move on together... Face it this time last year WE ALL thought what a great signing... May be take the armband away ..think that was the problem in the first place....come on FWAW
John Bates
I dont care about stories or the fact he turned up for training once a little worse for wear,I would suggest many of us have, so dont lets sit in judgement.Give him a chance!!! He has spent most of his time paired with the worst pair of centre backs ever to wear the shirt.Give him a great partner Jody and see him fly, if we can get any money for berra or stearman we should grab it and run,Sol will see through them.
Solentwolves
I for one will go along with Stale's statements. I was not happy with RJ's behaviour at the time but, if we are going to buy into the Solbakken era, we have to respect his judgements. Anyway, he can't make snap decisions at this stage. One thing is for sure and that is if he chooses to select Roger, we also must wipe the slate clean and give him every chance to redeem himself. Abuse aimed at him will disrupt the rest of the team on the pitch and damage our chances. United we stand, divided we fall. (RJ please note). UTW
Creep in Wolves Clothing
So it looks like we're stuck with Johnson, but if he proves himself, we could be glad of him. Otherwise, Stale won't play him. I can't wait to see who Stale picks for the first match at Leeds. That could be a portent for the season. UTW.
Rancor_Bait
But does Johnson want prove himself at Wolves?
If he stays then TC has to go. Can't see those two working together successfully on the training pitch.
PeteNuts
Johnson probably got as far as "Roger Johnson offered a fresh..." and got really excited. "
Fresh what? Fresh G&T? Fresh Long Island Iced Tea? Fresh Harvey Wallbanger...? What? Fresh START? I've never heard of that particular cocktail. Oh well, I'll give it a go."
Booty
Clean slate for everyone this season I think, including Johnson (although if someone offered us £2m I'd snap their hand off!!)
Football fans are a fickle breed and I think if Johnson gets his head down and really tries his best to make amends for last season, I can see him winning the fans over, his performances need to see a massive improvement though
gold and black on my back
It was a rough season last year for all connected with wolves. I would forgive Johnson if he got his head down, worked hard and got rid of that chip on his shoulder. He needs to build a few bridges with his team mates and start performing on the pitch. He could be good for us if he sorts himself out
onerobbiedennison
i think well said it looks like the the manager will be picking people on merit and not the fact that they are his favourite
E11wolf
If Johnson can get his 'head together' and play like he can play then he would be a brilliant asset and Stale is being very sensible with him. I reckon had both he and Craddock played regularly to their abilities last season we might have got sufficient points to stay up.It was often mistakes at the back that cost us as opposed to great play by the opposition.
Stale is ticking all the boxes with me thus far. However have you seen the players blackburn are buying. They mean businness don't they as do Bolton.... It's going to be tough but very interesting too.

Good to see that by getting relegated to the we can now flog a bit more advertising space on the back of the shirts - and we all thought Jez didn't have a plan !!

Don't trust bodger, he has no respect for the club or the fans, he prove that by his appaling attitude last season. He is also too slow and thinks he is better than he is.
I would not trust him as far as I could throw him.

Players Blackburn are buying??? What a joke. Best, Gomes and Murphy 2 has-beens and one average player. He deserves a second chance. He is not the only player last season to under perform. Roger has potential but he needs the fans to be on his side so get a grip and lets leave last season behind and start a new fresh and stop the bile and vitriol. It was McCarthy's fault for making him captain and giving him the dressing room which upset the players. Roger was doing what he was told and the players never took to him through jealousy. If you are a player you go along with the manager. Stop being like the media and be more independant in your thinking. Looking forward to seeing you play next season Roger good luck mate. We are Wolves
IanTheLichfieldWolf
This makes a lot of sense. I know it goes against the grain after last season but a clean slate allows him the chance to show the new manager he is up for it. We know that Roger Johnson has proved in the past that he can be a class act at Championship level.
IF he can get his attitude right
IF he can rediscover his form and...
IF the other players in that dressing room are prepared to give him another chance, then we could have one of the best central defenders in the league and an experienced partner for young Danny Batth maybe?
If he doesn't take this opportunity given to him by Stale then we've lost nothing more and he gets shipped out.
Filthy Wolf
Mick stirred it up last season when he deposed Henry and made Johnson Captain. After that we might as well have just stopped playing and waited for obvious relegation. So give him a chance but I think the whole story is misleading when you read Stale's comments. He's simply saying everyone has a chance to prove themselves. Johnson just happens to be one of those with more to prove than others.
paul
Some of you lot are quite sad people, give the guy a break, he his not a bad player, have none of you made a mistake or Two, we need to worry more about Ward and Co, being in the team next year.

@21 Paul
Are you familiar with the concept that respect has to be earned rather than expected, and that it is learned by reciprocating the expected respect, rather than treating those from whom you expect it with contempt?
To put it another way - we'll give the guy a break when he cuts us one and starts honouring the old gold and black a bit.
Chris
We will have to see with RJ, he has a lot to prove. I think this fresh start at Wolves will be perfect. We will see a completely different team this year. Something we have not seen in 6 years?
Sir Lupi
For me this is good news.
I know many of you have been less than impressed by Johnson but for me I relly sympothise with the guy.
Why? Well has it ever dawned on the anti Johnson brigade that he WAS fighting our cause last season?
The way see it is Johnson was the only guy to tell Mick and his favourites in the dressing room, how truely poor they are. He ruffled the feathers of Ward, Henry, Berra,Foley, and in particular, Hennessy and they didnt like the truth.
Coming to training the worst for wear is inexcusable, but I feel he was only saying (probably in the wrong way) to the team what we could all see on the pitch.
Micks loyalty to his players was unfair, they were awful at the back, yet he ws to stubborn to change his tactics, or drop/replace his favourites. And the board were to stupid to get rid of MM after the disgraceful display against Blackburn end of last season.
Standing next to Ward & Berra and Hennessy 'the mute' behind him chucking the ball in the net is enough for any decent centre half to turn to drink! the likes of Edwards or Foley, simply not strong or good enough to play in a Premiership midfield infront of him, exposing the back four constantly, I would of gone crazy.
If Johnson stays, and I hope he does, I am willing to bet a wager he will be our player of he season by far, but onl once Solbakken gets rid of Micks talentless old guard.
Keep the faith.
Solentwolves
@ paul - you could be right! I'll have to give it some thought.

Just because a player has a bad season and granted, makes some stupid mistakes doesn't make him a bad player, if he forgets last season, and starts a fresh there's no reason why we cant have a top defender on our hands! That's if he wants to Ofcourse!

Oh great start Stale! Lets keep the most despised man in the squad, wonderful. After too many years we got rid of one manager who didn't give a damn about the supporters so I hope to God we haven't got another one. I had some hopes for Stale but this is not a good start, Johnson should be gone, take 50p for him. The fact that no one has shown any interest speaks volumes so why should we have to keep him. Jesus, here we go again.
loffinstock
Lets see if he can find form like the 1-5 defeat clearance that he ballooned up in the air then stood there with his gob open while them down the road stuck it in. Or the display at their place when Long tore him a new one and was lucky to stay on the pitch.
Sssshhhhh
RJ didn't have a good season but yep let's see if a change of manager might persuade him to stay and work hard. The problem at wolves last couple of seasons where that we bought into too much of Micks "put a shift in" mentality and his unwilling to drop the click. RJ wanted to stamp his authority but my eyes tells me that certain players I.e ward, stearman, Henry, Edwards, Hennessy didn't like it.
PJB
#59. Spot on Sir Lupi.
Johnson has been cast as the pantomime villain by the antics of Captain Karl and his gang of 4 latterly actively supported by the so called Manager Connor.
Yes of course his training ground indiscretion was inexcusable (shopped by his "mates") but his major crimes were to accept the captaincy replacing the ineffectual Henry and then to actually expose their incompetence by acting as a proper Captain (notably the Hennessy incident).
Until the McCarthey culture of self intersted favourites (Ward, Henry, Stearman, Edwards, CONNOR and any other fellow travellers) is removed f
ThaiWolf
Sorry Stale, you've made an error of judgement regarding Johnson.
Players don't trust him, fans don't like him and I say he was always over-rated.
He's NOT a team leader he's not even a section leader (defense).
He's had his chance and blew it.
He MAY perform better if there was a strong defensive character playing alongside of him. But there isn't and won't be. Not unless Danny Batth can step up and take defensive charge. A lot to ask of the young man.
nightflyer69
If you were in team just relegated and all had your pay cut in half except one player who had underperformed by a mile, would you be happy playing with him?? He has to go or take a pay cut like the rest or else there will be a load of resentment amongst the players, its only human nature.

Give him a chance.
We know the previous issues but lets face it who here hasnt had probs.
He made a mistake and i think Stale is taking the right approach.
He is the best CB we have at this level so give him a chance. The mistake was giving him the captincy not signing him. The rest of the squad didnt like it and thats why we ended up where we were.
All the guys saying "we" dont want him at our club. Im guessing you are probably sitting in the South Bank and class your selves as "better" fans than the rest of us. Yet you pay the cheapest tickets in the ground and turn against the team quicker than everyone else. Just get behind all of them, leave the club, who know alot more about football than all of us, to do they're jobs.

Again I seee the bull about Johnson and how all these fans think they know whats gone on. Probably the same fans who abused Jamie Ohara when he had his child in his arms. Idiots the same rumours about what happened to Lesscott when we got promoted, all bull. Like i have said in the past if Stearman got picked ahead of me I would hit the bottle. It wasn't RJ's fault he got 40k a week nor his when he was picked as captain. Then he's expected to clap fans who call him names. I remember when the man was the only one to come and shake my nephews hand and give him his training shirt. Until people who know for sure what has gone on then judging him on idle gossip is pathetic. UTW.

IF stale is giving Roger a second chance, then i think us Wolves fans SHOULD.Lets look at the facts, Mad mick up set the Henry click by making him captain, then despite helping making Berra a better player, he was blamed for a couple of defeats then dropped. Then terry the clown took over and constantly played BABI (steerman) in front of him. Would drive any man to drink, but not an excuse. Then his actions at wigan, yes it was a disgrace, but ask yourselves this, your own fans are booing you, how would you react. I think he is a class defender, but what he has to work with , ward and steerman most people would struggle. Give the man a chance and lets see?

Well Blackburn have signed Best, Murphy and Gomez. Very, very impressive. Bolton have added Andrews and keeping their best players. We have somehow managed to pull off the signing coup that is Frank Nouble, difficult to type that without laughing.
Going to be a long hard season. Can we make the play offs? Hope so but I fear we will be more like 16th or 17th and the stale one gone by May.
We have no drive, no ambition and it's painful to watch other clubs make astute signings while we snap up the totally inept Nouble.

Ignoring the terrible arrogance, we only saw 3-4 half decent performances, from what we thought was a top drawer player.
We know the championship is full of graft and effort, this will end in tears. 13, spot on.
Loan him out Stale. Danny Bath is the answer, twice the player. Right attitude.

Firstly let me make it clear I don't like Johnson, at all, overrated as a player & comes across as a big time Charlie & not a good character.
But publicly the manager has to do this, especially if he hasn't even spoken to him yet, privately I'd imagine Johnson will have to do twice as much as everyone else there & prove that he wants to be, something I don't think he will be able to do, due to the extremely large chip he carrys around with him on his shoulder.
But if the manager didn't handle it this way,he would open to criticism for not doing so, let not forget Johnson has been an extremely expensive failure, on a similar scale to Greece in the Euro.
I don't think we'll be seeing too much more of Johnson, he'll be off to one our Championship rivals & will try to sneak some sort of trivial retribution by hoping his new club can nick a point or 2 off us!!!!
I think that sums him up.

Mr. Johnson has an awful lot to prove. He has to get rid of his higher than mightier attitude, cause his attitude towards the club, team mates and fans last season was appalling. In my opinion he is the reason why we are in the Championship. But hey ho maybe Stale can get his attitude right. I will wait and see. Definately no captain arm band.

Many of us have been/are Managers at work and occasionally have been asked to accomodate Mr/Ms X who isn't working well in another department.
Often it works, new direction, new manager etc, so I'm all for giving him a try this season.
I do respect the feelings of those fans who see him (when picked!) live rather than on Arabic Television in our local taverna.

Glad to see that Stale is prepared to start afresh with RJ the pantomime villain.
1. Surely a better bet than Stearman or Berra (out of contract this year anyway) in central defence. Try him with Batth, Zubar, Myokoulo
or even Big George.
2. Represents a substantial financial outlay which we will only recoup if we can "repatriate" him.
3. His "crimes" last season were largely caused by the fact that he was clearly unpopular with Mick's clique none of whom are good enough and were probably told so by a proper captain (unlike Captain Karl). This was highlighted by the Hennessy incident where RJ correccly castigated Hennessy for his lack of aerial dominance.
4. Due to his unpopularity with the in crowd he was then shopped by his "mates" and ostracised by the clique's idiotic champion Connor. Is it any wonder he has little love for the Club.
Yes, he has been guilty of indiscretions and on occasion stupidity. But my suggestion is to concentrate on keeping our better players:-
Fletcher and Jarvis if at all possible.
Doyle.
Zubar.
Johnson.
SEB if he can recover his fitness and form.
Miljas
Kites (new contract please).
Fresh starts for Hamill, Guardioura, Myokouulou and maybe even Craddock.
Ikeme, De Vries as GK's.
Integrate the best of the youngsters.
Sell Hunt & O'hara as they don't seem to fit.
Cash in on "Dracula" Hennessy when over his injury.
AND CLEAR OUT THE CLIQUE WHO SEEM TO THINK THAT THEY OWN THE CLUB (no names required).

I think you'll find Johnson's gripe is with MOXEY not the team management....

It's pre-season so Stale wants to look at everybody. All the players are still being paid so they all need a chance to prove their worth to the new gaffer. Stale aint saft. He will know who's good and who's wood.

Johnson must feel this is his last chance to perform at a reasonable level as a footballer.
Solbakken is fair, but also a strict SOB! He will give the man a chance to show true heart and dedication.
If Johnson doesn't perform or shows any type of team-wrecking attitude, he will be out of the wardrobe the next day.
As a 30-year-old, can he still perform? Yes. But can he reform his attitude?
That's the question Solbakken will need a conclusive answer to.
Solbakken knows that a spreading virus of bad attitude and intrigue can wreck any teams performance.
Johnson is obviously on strict probation.
Let's hope he still wants to play football. If he does he could be a real asset!

Half of you lot who call yourself wolves fans are nasty and vindictive
One minute it's let's get behind the team the next it's slagging a player off. It's never going to be upto the fans who plays in the team as we all know so get a life
Decent footballers have come to us and have been stifled from playing and made to run round like headless chickens, let's see what a decent manager can do with them

think about this....lee hughes, john terry, the guy who ran down the kids in his car..now these are the players who should never be gven a second chance....johnson had a bad season and turned up hungover at training once and got caught out. if think this bad then you should read paul gascoins autobiography...i know hes been a tosser this season but i dont think he deserves to never play for the club again....1 more chance e thinks
Danepak
get rid, the only answer, if hes as good as people say then we havent seen it, hes been bad for the team, the fans and the club. Fair enough the new guy needs to give him a chance but i would be very surprised if old rog is still at wolves.
To say that our decent player have been stifled is true, but johnson isnt one of them trust me, ask any brummie fan and when they have stopped laughing, they will tell you glad to see the back of him !! Over rated big time charlie, do one !

so when the pundits on MOTD pointed that the goals in that game were caused by johnson bad positioning and lack of pace, its waynes fault for not saving them, rubbish. A good captain motivates his team, not slags them off or blames them for his mistakes. Hes lucky wayne didnt belt him. he'd been doing it all season and enough was enough. Thing that gets me is why we bought in the first place, his team went down, clearly they couldnt defend !!! This mick clique is a load of rubbish, fact of the matter is Birminghams players dont speak highly of him, nor the blues fans, mick still thought he was the messiah but he was just a naughty boy !!
Weme a big club we am aye we, we deserve to be in the premier doe we
Aside from watching it in tv, stale knows little of english football and less about the championship. This decision underlines my belief that hes probably reluctant to make too many changes. This is all going to end in tears, and made worse by the club building up stale to be some sort of footballing messiah. Why oh why oh why cant we just go about our business in a low key manner? Instead we do the usuall trumpeting, boasting and bragging pre season. Embarrassing.
