Wolves eye Stefan Savic loan from Manchester City
Wolves are eyeing a move for Manchester City defender Stefan Savic – but look like having to move players on first.
Wolves are eyeing a move for Manchester City defender Stefan Savic – but look like having to move players on first.
Savic, a 21-year-old Montenegro international, is understood to be one of the centre-backs identified by new manager Stale Solbakken to strengthen Wolves’ defence.
The former Partizan Belgrade stopper may be available on a season-long loan if City can sign another central defender.
Described by City as “one of the brightest young talents in European football”, Savic made 20 appearances for the Premier League champions in all competitions last season and has seven caps, scoring twice.
Savic was Roberto Mancini’s second summer signing last year when he penned a four-year deal but was forced to be patient behind Vincent Kompany, former Wolves man Joleon Lescott and Pablo Zabaleta for much of the campaign.
But there are obstacles preventing Savic joining.
The pending signing of Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson and captures of Frank Nouble and Jamie Tank take the number of professionals at Wolves to around 50, most of which will report back for testing next week before pre-season training begins on July 9.
And it is understood that tally may well have to be trimmed before Solbakken can add further to his squad.
Steven Mouyokolo is back at Compton after his cruciate ligament injury and will be fit by September.
The French-born defender adds to a group of players competing for the centre-back places including Roger Johnson, Richard Stearman, Christophe Berra and Danny Batth, while Jody Craddock has a two-week trial to impress.
Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis should also be returning with no developments yet on the duo, who it is understood want to remain in the Premier League.

At 21 is the right age and the write up is very good but if he is so talented would her really want to play in the Championship for wolves
PeteNuts
If this is plausible, then move Heaven and Earth to accommodate him. Or at least sell Johnson at a hefty loss. Either is good.

Now were talking!!!!! Get rid of Stearman, Johnson, kolo and get Stefan Savic in ASAP would be brilliant on a season long loan

Would be an unbeleivable signing if we could pull it off, but very much doubt it.

LEFT BACK REQUIRED
As it seems unlikely now that any of the backroom staff are moving on, it's probably just as unlikely we'll be able to off load Berra, Stearman or Johnson, so not much chance of landing this guy, even if the story is true.
I would have thought at 40k a week, which is what I believe Wolves are paying Johnson, it would make more financial sense to cut our losses and tear up his contract so we could at least stop having to pay him. One years wages is almost another half of his transfer fee.
golden wolf
'Who it is understood what to remian in the Premier League' says who? When we were relegated Fletch was on Twitter that night saying 'we will be back' This isn't the Albion where there players go to the press etc.
JJ
Move players on are you joking. What other central defenders have we got. Johnson won't be playing in a Wolves shirt again regardless of weather another club wants him again or not. Craddock I doubt will have much to play this season. Moyokolo is still injured. We've only got Berra and Stearman and a few untried youth players after that. It doesn't matter that we have too many players elsewhere we still need at least another central defender regardless.
Cornish Wolf
With around 50 professionals at the club it is patently obvious that there is much fat to be trimmed.
Those players who it is reported wish to seek a new club and remain in the the Premiership should be encouraged to do so, post haste!
Similarly players too old or inept should be discarded either by transfer or if necessary by cancelation of their contracts. I am sure that in the long run this would prove cost effective.
The manager would then be free to sign those players he feels will form his and our new team.

In order to sign him we have to:
Sell some players.
Man City have o sign some players.
Pay his part/all his wages.
Fight of competition fro other clubs.
He's not coming really is he, its just Express & Star nonsense.

I saw this guy play a few times last season and he was quality! Very excited about the prospect of him joining but cant see him take the drop down :o(

It's a joke get rid of the failed youngsters and dead wood players first! I think it is ridiculous we signed nouble and tank there are hardly players yet, its a joke we have to sell all of a Sudden in order to bring in others.
Moxeys at it again, guranteed another boring season at this rate.

total speculation.

From what I saw last season this player is not the answer to strengthen our defence. I'd support him if he came but this worries me a bit if it's the kind of defender Stale likes the look of. Forever Wolves
Stoubridge Wolf
Amazing how just twelve months ago Johnson and Dann were the best thing since sliced bread (even after relegating Blues).
Both were relegated again the following season - proof Wolves and Blackburn have been sucked in by the agent/media hype on two very average players!
I would like to see us get rid of as many of our defenders as possible and just start again!
Based on what I saw last season a clean sweep is required.
StripedPyjamaThrostle
With all due respect, there is more chance of me marrying the Pope and settling down to start a family in the bowels Middle Earth than there is of the story coming to fruition! Why would City let a player who played 20 games for them, who is one of Europe's finest young defenders, slug it out in the Championship for a year? If anything the stories of Savic moving out on loan are linking him to Serie A and the Bundesliga where he will be tested technically rather than physically (as is undoubtedly the case in the Championship.
Express & Star, I do wonder where you get these 'stories' from; there are often no quotes, no sources, just pure speculation. It's no more reliable than Drunk Frank's predictions of the Euromillions numbers down the Horse and Jockey! Certainly not having a pop at Wolves here, I just question whethe reporting should be a little more thorough on here sometimes...

Are you sure you don't have a director of football there? as it sounds like a Barry Fry type of squad.
Doyler!
A very positive move. This guy is quality.
I wonder if the likes of the inferior defenders we do have are wondering if they will be the ones being moved on! I do hope so.
They got us relegated by their useless footballing methods, now they may be relegated themselves. Be interesting to see who comes in for tehm and from what league!

50 pros???
25 will be 17/18/19 yr olds & no where near ready for the first team.
Then you have Fletcher, Craddock, Jarvis, Elokobi, OHara, Henry, Johnson & Hunt who could all leave the club for various reasons, some we will want to move on others we won't.
That leaves 17 which includes the likes of Batth, Forde, Davis & Doherty who, with the exception of Davis are unknown quantities for regular first team football.
So then we are down to 14.
I'd say we need Savic, even though he's still learning the game over here & looked poor at times last yr in the Prem.
Andy C
People need to remember that Savic looked poor next to players like Micah Richards, Lescott and Zabaletta.

50 professionals? I'd say 50 staff, some full-time, some part-time, and some not doing what they are paid for. Sort the wheat from the chaff, and then see how many real professionals we really have.
Savic for the Wolves? Let's hope so. Guess Man City may be reluctant to loan him to another Premiership club. If so, then our chances of securing his services are much improved.
As for Jody Craddock being given the chance to impress (your words, not mine), then I think this is somewhat insulting to the guy. He may be getting a little long in the tooth now, but he should be honoured with some sort of contract - considering the sterling service he has given to this club.
I would further add that giving Craddock a contract is one instance where loyalty would not be misplaced - unlike last season when the same honour was being shown to less deserving club members.
IanTheLichfieldWolf
It's quality we need and not quantity.
Sadly we have too much of the latter and not nearly enough of the former.
Good to see Stale identifying these type of players. Let's hope there's more up his sleeve and the club back him to bring them in.

I would say we have a current first team squad of 36 (only included players with League One experience upwards):
Goalkeepers 3 (Hennessey, De Vries, Ikeme)
Defenders 12 (Foley, Zubar, Doherty, Stearman, Berra, Johnson, Batth, Craddock, Mouyokolo, Elokobi, Ward, Reckford)
Midfielders 13 (Kightly, Hammill, Mendez-Laing, Edwards, Henry, Davis, O’Hara, Milijas, Jonsson, Guedioura, Hunt, Jarvis, Forde)
Forwards 8 (Doyle, Fletcher, Ebanks-Blake, Vokes, Sigurdarson, Griffiths, Nouble, Cassidy)

With Rio Ferdinand and John Terry getting past there best Wolves are thinking about making a daring bid for the two stoppers.
Negotiations have started with Man City about a season long loan for Tevez.
Stale is looking to bring in Harry Rednapp as his number 2.
Jez Moxey is considering his future at Wolves.
Steve Morgan is pumping £100M into the club with rebuilding the remaining stands a priority.
Perhaps the E&S can take me on to write these fantasy stories - where is the substance? the quotes from the club?
Pure speculation.......

No. 11 There is know way you have seen him play, just what games were they then? I can assure you that Savac is absolute rubbish!!!
I watched him against Liverpool and Wolves in the league cup and I can assure you that Floyde Street is a better player, if he were any good other prem clubs would be interested.

Question
Why is Mouyokolo is keen to prove his worth to Wolves now???
Shouldn't he have doing that 2 years ago, or could it be that no one will touch him with a barge pole, coz he's barely kicked a ball for 3 years???
Do these 'footballers' all think we are as stupid as they are???

Anyone thought of giving players a fair crack of the whip and a fresh start under the new manager you never know it might come good if solbakken is any good as a manager after all the players we are up against this season are of less quality than last and with a good work ethic we might just have a good season

The ability of some posters to judge a players whole career through watching him a couple of times is astounding!
Whether he is a target for Wolves (I doubt it) or not should not diminish that fact that he is rated good enough to be in the squad of the Premiership Champions - I would suggest Wolves in the Championship would be way below the level he is capable of performing at.......even with Berra alongside him!
Greg
27. out of your 36 players i would get rid of at least 11 of them
Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Johnson, Ward, Mouyokolo, Jonsson, Edwards, O Hara, Millijas, Griffiths and Nouble

36 A very fair point I think. A couple of seasons ago every touch of the ball wasn't a pass back to the goalkeeper as it was last season. They can only have been told to do that by the coaching staff. I am fairly sure the players didn't collectively decide to do it themselves, or become poor footballers overnight. It had to be some sort of directive from above. The number of times we lost possession just by doing that at every opportunity only to lose possession and be under attack again with players out of position. The midfield was looking to the heavens for the ball for most of the games. New manager new ideas may be the way forward.
Also is it just me or did the style we play change when we stopped using the multi ball system? I was reminded of it whist watching the Euros. I seem to remember it was stopped because in one game we had two balls on the pitch for a couple of seconds, that seems to have been the normal watching the current games on TV.
Big Bad Wolf
Have to agree with Tom etc here, I'm not sure what you lot who think he's 'class' were watching last season but it wasn't Savic, very much in the mould of David Luis at Chelsea, absolutely no positional sense but a bit of pace. I thought he looked useless and would be severely caught out against the hit and rush football in the championship.

"That leaves 17 which includes the likes of Batth, Forde, Davis & Doherty who, with the exception of Davis are unknown quantities for regular first team football."
Batth featured very regularly for Sheffield Wednesday last season, Doherty featred regularly for Hibs last season so they aren't unknown quantities for regular 1st team football.
#10 has it right on Savic!

I do hope Wolves FC get Mr.Savic aboard, the club needs subtle changes in personnel to progress and develop. Instant success is not easy especially keeping in the black whilst developing. I have every faith in Steve Morgan, yes he has critics, but he means well; it could be much worse.
AshleyWolf
people are saying that he had a terrible season at city, yeah maybe he did, that's the premier league, half of our fans still don't realise we are not in the premier league no more, we are in the championship, not many people would get past savic in our division, its like the top league in serbia where savic started his playing career (partizan) i also belive milijas is a prime example, he will be quility in the championship next season and it will bring his confidence up so if we do get promoted back to the EPL on the first time of asking milijas will hopefully sign a new contract and be full of confidence in the top league!!! UTW!

I am fairly certain players like Fletcher, Jarvis and O'Hara will be off and that will get us a minimum £20m. Others that might go are Zubar, Milijas, Doyle and Johnson. We need some new faces in but ideally need to get rid of the likes of Berra, Stearman, Elokobi, Edwards, Hunt and Vokes. Based on the pitiful performances of last season and what we might have left, I would suggest that a line up like this could do no worse?
De Vries Doherty Craddock Batth Ward Kightly Davis/Henry Guedioura Hammill Sigurdarsson Ebanks-Blake

Yep fair point
But they play for Wolves & us as fans know v little about them in our team, or do you want to disagree with that as well ???
Both of the teams you mention are at a lower level than we will be next season never mind last season.

45 Ashley - you are so right. After 3 years of listening to Berra and co. being described as Championship players - most of them being in the squad that won the Championship, they are now apparently not good enough for the Championship. Very confusing.
I cannot imagine Savic coming, but some people will believe anything on here - even that we have 50 professionals when we just left a league where the maximum squad is 25. I know we have a few loan returnees and kids who are now senior players but 27 has it about right. 36 players is too many, but some of these are very much fringe players.
KeepJohnson!
Savic had a shocker of a season. Maybe far from the finished article but playing in the Wolves defence might kill off all the potential he may have. Granted one for the future but not for the Wolves if we only want a bare bones squad. We have to come out of the starting blocks fast for a chance of promotion and I feel it'd take him 20 games just to get upto speed. Love how all the fans think they know whats gone on behind the scenes re Johnson and O'Hara etc. Keep Johnson and give him a chance because to be honest if I found out Stearman was starting before me I think I'd hit the bottle and sulk!

Milijas got shafted by MM and I think it is hardly fair to get rid of him, Wolves management cost him big time with losing out on international duty and the rest because of the numpties for not giving him a fair run.

That figure of 50 professionals already at the club, speaks volumes about overall management of resources in the past. Just imagine, 50 of whom barely half a dozen could properly hold their own in the Prem, from where we have just landed.
Ståle will have learned plenty from the recordings he took back, and he'll learn even more when he gets here on Monday, and sees that little army of players awaiting, all eating into the money needed for good players.
I wish him luck, and hope the surgery is quick and deep, and we cut our losses where necessary. What's the use holding out for, say, £0.5m when most will be getting that by way of a year's pay, doing nothing?

wanderer in eire
If one was to go by his performances last season he is below standard.
If one takes a punt prior to last season he could become a great player for us especially in the championship.
I would go with taking him for "CITY" to buy him he must be showing a degree of a quality.Their could be many reasons for his dissappointing displays like moving country with strangers at such a tender age at a club who have some of the best players in the world.Atleast with "WOLVES" he will find it "EASY" to outshine Berra johnson and co!
dinglewoody
If we have 50 professionals at the club we need to start cutting the numbers back - starting with all of the players who were touting TC to become the permanent manager of the club (at the end of last season) - as they clearly are far too comfortable playing dire football and should not be at our football club (messrs Edwards, Ward etc)

I swear if the E&S wrote that Moxey was considering closing the Molineux down and playing our home games on the Moon next season half of you would post about it. I am totally at a loss as to what is happening at Molineuux. E&S figure of 50 professionals seems to be overstated as listed squad for last Home game according to match programme numbered 33 and returning loanees not listed include Batth, Myokoulo and Leigh Griffiths, whilst Bassong nad Frimpong can be discounted. So, a total of around 33 professionals.
BUT, it's clear that there is potential to trim the numbers and against this background our new manager has made what appears to be a huge potential signing in Sigurdason whilst behind his back others (CONNOR / WEAVER?) are operating in the bargain basement, an area where we are already well served and need to shed numbers not acquire more.
I would like to ask.
Who the hell is running the show?
And why are the rump apparently being allowed to undermine the new manager by making unilateral decisions without any apparent control.
As has been said before by many of us let Stale make up his own mind, but I feel he might be well advised to take a long hard look at Connor, Weaver, Ward, Edwards, Henry, Stearman and any others who wish to perpetuate the McCarthy culture at WWFC.

Savic doesn't need to drop a league, dream on E&S he is a premier league player. Much more likely to go to a mid table top flight team or go abroad for a year.
The transfer policy looks a joke. Nothing coherent, grubbing around in the bargain basement, and best half dozen leaving. Nothing wrong with cheap but it's all looking desperate. No chance of play offs IMO.
Albion make you look a joke. What a shambles your club is.
