Sam Vokes aims to catch Wolves boss’s eye

Sam Vokes today became the second Molineux fringe striker to demand a crack at impressing new boss Stale Solbakken before deciding on his future.

Sam Vokes today became the second Molineux fringe striker to demand a crack at impressing new boss Stale Solbakken before deciding on his future.

Vokes, whose four-year stay at Wolves has seen him farmed out on no fewer than six loan spells, played for both Brighton and Burnley in the Championship last season.

Burnley’s sale of Jay Rodriguez has intensified speculation around Turf Moor that manager Eddie Howe will attempt to sign the 22-year-old Welsh international permanently while Brighton, where he finished the campaign, is also a possibility

But the Wolves man has adopted the thinking of Leigh Griffiths, another of the club’s young forwards who played on loan at Hibernian last season, in indicating that it is Solbakken’s eye he wants to catch when pre-season training begins next month.

Vokes said: “I enjoyed my time down at Brighton. I loved the area but we’ll see what happens at Wolves. I have another year left on my contract and a new manager has been appointed.

“When I finished with Brighton he came in for a week and spoke to the lads. I’ll be there for pre-season and I am open-minded at the moment.”

Strikers are at the forefront of speculation around Molineux at the moment with the club’s interest in Lillestrom striker Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson high on the agenda.

Wolves are making progress in that deal which is complicated by Lillestrom not yet halfway through the Norwegian season and keen to hang on to the 21-year-old Icelandic striker for at least the summer period.

The hunt for Sigurdarson is woven into the future of Steven Fletcher Wolves expect a fierce fight to keep him.

They will demand a high price with Sunderland the first to show their hand. They have not yet contacted Molineux but are reported to have broached the prospect with his agent who is aware of the £12m-plus starting price Wolves will ask.

LMAO dont be so silly Vokes! your absolutely rubbish and you need to be sold! GOODBYE

angrywolf

I would be doing everything to keep Fletcher at Wolves next season, with incentives etc, too good for him to refuse.....with him in front, there is every chance Wolves could regain Premiership status next season.

I would be offering Kevin Doyle around to those interested in a striker, he would not be a great loss to Wolves, I would also get rid of Ebanks-blake.

There would then be scope for a player like Volkes to under study Fletcher

Leon

For me if stale keeps Leigh Griffiths, he will show me he is as clueless as McCarthy, the guy is a little flea that causes more trouble than he is worth. Griffiths was the sort of pathetic signing that cost us our place in the premiership, I know he did not play, but for me he summed up the sort of signings McCarthy made in his last year or two.. Virtually all was useless and no help to the cause.

Dutch Wolf

Lol - I would keep under the radar if I was you because if you do catch his eye you will be sold based on the what I have seen!

UTW !

Ade

Thats a bit harsh .... Has never had a proper run out and I think could turn out to be a good player at 22 years of age. You sell him now it will come back and bite you on the bum.

SOUTHWICK WOLF

Hey Tom, hang on dux, give the guy a chance to impress, why not? No shortage of Wolves players who have made the grade after being dumped by McCarthy. My feeling is that quite a few Wolves players who didn't get a fair crack of the whip under McCarthy could well blossom under a manager who:

1. Plays them in their right positions.

2. Picks players in form, not through favouritism &

3. Knows what he's doing.

I believe our new manager has all those qualities.

Were you one of those posters Tom, who suggested Gus Poyet for Wolves manager, I wonder. There's a man who has an eye for a promising player.

sd

i would play ward up front he is class has been for years ask sir billy quite !

Balham Wolf

Basically a lot of the players we have will be worth keeping for the championship campaign. Jarvis and Fletcher will go, possibly Doyle, Henry even Keightly.

Vokes would be worth looking at in the Fizzy Pop!

Bonk Wolf

To hear people on here all the while you would think that we have no decent players. Every player that is mentioned in a report is derided as being useless.

Are these boggy fans !!! If not, get off the players backs and give them a chance - you may be surprised how they perform with a bit of positive backing for a change.

dan

to slow and and just not good enough. There is hardly a rush from other clubs he has been at to sign him up.

Macey mardygit

Vokes is alright, and he's still learning the higher end of the game. Why would Poyet want to sign him if he was rubbish.I'll tell you why,he's young big strong,Poyet knows he can turn him into a good striker. If he's out on loan at Brighton this season we will have touble from him, mark my words.COME ON THE WOLVES.

PeteNuts

Six goals in 27 games during three loan spells in the second tier over the last year and a half. As Roy Walker of Catchphrase fame might almost say, "It's good, but it's not great."

Judge Jeffries

Vokes has never been given a fair or consistent run.

Give the guy a chance.

Ronjon

I feel that Jarvis and Fletcher have proved their ability and worthiness over the last few seasons so why sell. If they want to leave then find out why. If it's over payment then meet the demand since we can afford it. I would also suggest that the two top men leave the choice of new players to the manager and not impose a 'choose 1 out of the following bunch' condition as it would appear to have been imposed on the previous manager.

spanishray

Vokes, you have to go,Griffiths ,we still don`t know what that idiot McCarthy was thinking about when he signed you.Keep Fletcher,Kightly,Jarvis, and we might have a chance of promotion at the first time of asking.

Old Golds Worth More

I wonder if Vokes (same goes for Griffiths) fancies playing for Lillestrom? After all they will (hopefully) be looking for a striker soon! On the other hand if we keep playing with two wingers, then a big target man will come in handy, especially if Fletcher leaves.

Taxi For Moxey

Angrywolf you are a numpty if you think we should sell SEB!

While I accept he didn't pull up any trees in the prem (neither did Doyle in the last 2 seasons) he is mustard at chump level. 25 goals in 44 appearances when we won the chump last time round but you want to sell!! Get a grip!!

PeteNuts

@17 TFM

We're banning the word "numpty" from these boards. We decided yesterday - it's a relic of Les Années McCarthy.

courier

If Sam Vokes were given a chance with two wingers and Fletcher we would have a great chance of returning to the Premiership

Crouch End Wolf

Number 1 you are talking out of your hat. Vokes is a Welsh international and has actually scored goals at that level. He has never been given a run with Wolves, and looked good in the Championship when much younger than he is now. I hope the new manager has an open mind, unlike some.

squeak parkin

Vokes - is too slow at 22 - he wont make it - simple .

SEB - yes was great in the chapionship last time { 3 years ago } can he do it now ?

Griffiths - ? has a poor disciplinary record - Stale needs to judge and see if his potential is worth the risk

BBS - may prove a wonder striker but cannot replace Fletch should he go

keep the main quality squad members and we will go straight back up . They set the bench mark - sell anyone and the policy MUST be to bring it better replacements .

WOLVES AY WE !!

Farmer Ted

21. Squeaky

If we sell Fletcher and Jarvis are you seriously suggesting we will sign better players to replace them. We are a Championship side !

It just does not make any sense. which 'better' players are going to step down to play for Wolves ?

Youngsters who have the potential to be better I'll accept.

karlwolves

Blakey has never, never had a decent run in the prem. Under mad mick, he was usualy used as a sub, and if he did score, Hull at home for example , was straight back on the bench.Playing games breeds confidence, and there is a whole list of players that mad mick then terry the clown, never gave a chance. Blakey, hammil, guiadeara, volkes and more.Volkes is only 22, you might say his goal scorring record isnt great, but if you are constanly playing for different clubs, it takes time to settle in and get used to your team mates.I know Stale will be nowhere as bad as mad mick, players will be given a chance and WILL play where they are meant to be playing.

Albrightondek

I'm sure that all the players on Wolves books will be given an opportunity to show Solbakken what they can do, or can't as the case may be.

However, our new manager has already signalled his intent to bring in fresh blood. That means there will be some players moving on, whether they want to or not.

In my view we have three quality strikers in Fletcher, Doyle and Ebanks-Blake. We will certainly need a forth due to injuries, suspensions, etc.

If we suppose for one moment all three remain at the club, then Sigurdarson could be the forth. In which case Vokes and Griffiths will more than likely be sold. Neither of them seem to be anything special.

If Fletcher were to be sold, then we may need to keep either Vokes or Griffiths, but not both.

Old Gold Portion of Chips

Vokes should be given chance.Still think he has potential .Under McCarthy ,the centre forwards had to defend first and then chase poor balls from the midfield.Certainly no relacement for Fletcher.

car hughes

if he was any good , id have thought any of the 5 of the last 6 clubs he as been with would have been in for him by now ... and they havent ..so that tells you all you need to know and i doubt the last club will be in either unless we give him away

Sir Billy Quiet

PeteNuts - HELP! - I can't think of any other word for sd other than the now banned one......

I wonder if Vindaloopi and sd are one and the same person?

Sam Vokes is 22 years old - his a traditional centre forward who will never be a world beater but does offers something different.

He will go on and have a decent career knocking around the Championship clubs - maybe he will do a job for us next season.

Leigh Griffiths? no idea about him.

Jimbo Hardnuts

Move Elokobi up front and pair him with Vokes. This could be a killer combination.

Courier

No 21

The Doog appeared slow so please dont think that everyone's style of play is slow. They only appear to be slow due to the way they move. Its an illusion.

JIWAL

The name of the game is getting out of the Chump at first attempt. So sell Fletcher for 10 mill or whatever and get Heskey in from Villa on a free. He would murder defences in this League

In any case I would suggest our pedestrian midfield is the main problem. It neither helps the defence or provides any ammo for the strikers.

O' Hara , Henry and Edwards need replacing with Davis, Frimpong and Hammill

jon the wolf davies

leon thats rubbish griffthis didnt cost us our place in the premiership, our poor perfomances cost us our place in the prem and so did mick mcCarthy not one player thats just rubbish and we need vokes for a team player he may not be a first team player but you use he for back up.

jon the wolf davies

why in the hell would you swap heskey for fletcher thats is the worst idea i have ever heard. heskey is slow, clumsy and only has about two years left in him, fletcher is a proven goalscorer, skillful and young.

mick russon

Living in Scotland(technically)I have had the chance to see a good bit of Griffiths, and his experience in the SPL will just about make him good enough in our Championship; but he does show promise so lets give him a chance. You never know, I remember a time when Wolves were on their uppers and we nicked some from the boggeys, and the forward daint half do good for us. I'm not saying Griffiths is that good, but after last seasons performances I only saw Fletcher do better.

kiwiwolfff

Never given a fair chance like others under mad mick.

Solentwolves

Sam can do a job -but probably from the bench rather than as a starter. That seems to have been his role at most of the clubs who have taken him on loan. Of course he should have the ambition to go on to greater things - good on him for that - but I can't see it happening beyond Championship level.

wombourne

If we're going to play attacking football in this division then we need players like Vokes in the squad.

We don't players who 'can hold the ball up' and then give it back to the midfield who then give it back to the defence.

Talking of which...it's the bloody defence that needs sorting out, they're the reason we were relegated.
