Outgoing Wolves boss Terry Connor today admitted his disappointment at not keeping the job long term – but insisted he wants to stay at Molineux.

Connor is preparing for his last game in charge at Wigan as new manager Stale Solbakken prepares to be unveiled on Monday.

The 49-year-old, who was interviewed for the job last Monday, will revert to his previous role as assistant manager to help Solbakken settle into his first managerial role in England.

Connor, who has served under Colin Lee, Dave Jones, Glenn Hoddle and Mick McCarthy, had previously said he wanted to continue as manager but had picked up just four points from 36.

Asked if he was disappointed not to keep the top job, a clearly emotional Connor said: "I'm a little bit disappointed, but I understand and accept as a manager you need to win games.

"So I knew I wouldn't get it – four draws from 12 games isn't good enough.

"It's all about the club and taking it forward and it was the right decision.

"I'm contracted by the club and I will do my best for the club and if this is the best way then I'm happy to do it.

"I do want to stay and I want the best for Wolves. I've worked under Colin Lee, Dave Jones Glenn Hoddle and Mick McCarthy, so I know I can do the role."

The current Wolves boss said he will give Solbakken every support he needs.

"I will welcome him like we do everyone coming into the football club," said Connor.

"He will have every support from myself and every member of staff – everyone will warm to him and give him every chance to do the job.

"I've never met Stale but I've seen his record and where he's worked and it's very impressive."

Connor said he wasn't surprised at the arrival of Solbakken, adding: "It wasn't a surprise for me – I'd been fully informed when I spoke to Steve Morgan and Jez Moxey on Monday and gave them my full views on the season and how we could move it forwards.

"I've been kept in the loop and they have my full support."
