Paul Ince: I want the Wolves job
Exclusive - by Tim Nash: Paul Ince today declared: “I’d take the Wolves job now,” after throwing his hat into the ring to succeed or work with Terry Connor.
Exclusive - by Tim Nash: Paul Ince today declared: “I’d take the Wolves job now,” after throwing his hat into the ring to succeed or work with Terry Connor.
The former Wolves captain is desperate to return to Molineux and relaunch his managerial career.
Ince spoke to chief executive Jez Moxey the day before Connor was appointed to the end of the season on February 24, claiming he was told the board wanted someone experienced.
But the 44-year-old former Macclesfield, MK Dons, Blackburn and Notts County boss believes he has all the qualities to take over a club he knows well.
“When I spoke to Jez about the situation, he said the job was about experience, but a day later they appointed Terry,” said Ince, who captained Wolves to the Premier League in 2003.
“With all due respect to ‘TC,’ I’ve got more managerial experience than him.
“I’ve saved teams from relegation, I’ve got teams promoted and I’ve managed in the Premier League.
“But the job at the moment is about motivating players and the fans and I feel I can do that.”
Ince is that keen to manage Wolves he is prepared to risk a relegation on his CV and start now.
“I feel should be at the club now,” he said.
“If someone said ‘take it for the last seven games’ I’d do it because it’s Wolves and they’re my club and they’re only going one way at the moment.
“Wolves is a massive club. I went there when they hadn’t been in the top division for 19 years and we won promotion at the first attempt and played there for four years so Wolves is a massive part of my life.”
Ince’s last job was at Notts County, where he was sacked a year ago after a club record nine defeats in a row.
But he saved Macclesfield from the drop against all the odds and won promotion with them and MK Dons and feels he could do a good job at Wolves.
“If I went there, they’d have nothing to lose,” he added.
“I’d tell the players the hard facts and say ‘everyone thinks you’re going down anyway’ and try to get something extra out of them.
Ince remains popular with Wolves fans and he topped an Express & Star poll in 2006 when he was interviewed for the job to succeed Glenn Hoddle before Mick McCarthy was appointed.

Colin.Dodd.
He's got experience, but nowhere near enough for the premiership, that's why he's been out for a year. Short of money probably.
With Moxeys' superb record, he'll more than likely take him on. :-((
Stato's Boring Brother
Probably one of the most balanced people in football - has a massive chip on each shoulder.
Normally I wouldn't want Wolves to toucjh him with a barge pole but desparate times call for desparate measures.

Much as we all feel (hope) TC is a dead man walking, this still seems inappropriate and I doubt it will have improved his chances of getting the job. We could make (just have made) a worse appointment, but surely we can find someone with more to offer than 'they're my club'.

Get in there my son!
First bit of passion for the club I've heard in a while - and someone who WANTS the job.

Why not???? Anything is better than what we have at the moment, at least with Ince you know what you'll get! Cold hard facts and a kick up the a**e for the players that so richly deserve it!
Problem is, he might want paying and so Moxey and Morgan would never appoint him anyway, no, we're stuck with TC until the end of the Summer and then God forbid next season as well!!!!!
Oh well - off to Stoke to waste even more money!

Get him in - whats the worst that can happen? We're not exactly pulling up any trees now are we! And he's quite clearly passionate about it and maybe that will pass on to the players AND fans - coz we sure as hell need some sort of boost before a long and tormented summer
we'll never die - we'll keep the gold flag flyin' high!

Its the perfect time for this man to come home.
Does he need the money, grief, Family upheaval or feel as though he wants a pint in the last chance saloon ???
NO. He wants it because he cares for Wolves the same as we all do.
Cometh the hour cometh the man.
I bet i we asked him he'd do it for free.
GET HIM IN AND GET HIM IN NOW.
Paul Ince is still hungry. Are we ?

I want the board to plan carefully and make the right choice.
Young, exciting, full of ideas and potential and NOT a yes man in Mnm's pocket.
Let's not do anything else stupid this season, after all we've had enough stupid this season to last another 19 years.
Plan.
You have the time to speak to various targets.
To agree on the right manager for Wolves.
To get things right for the next 6 years and to be able to recover from the FUBAR situation the club is now in.
Get it right.
No need to panic, that time is over.
Make the right decision.

You might have more experience Incey but you still left Blackburn in the relegation places through your LACK OF TOP LEAGUE EXPERIENCE. When you've cut your teeth at some of the other teams in the championship or in premier league , only then will you be a serious contender for the wolves job just not at this point in your short management career to date. Should go for BRUCE OR CURBISHLEY JUST OFFER THEM THE MONEY THEY WANT IT CAN'T BE ANY WORSE THAN THIS SEASON. Come on MOXEY and Morgan sort this mess out ASAP . Wolves fan since 78

Do one thing right this season Wolves and make this happen!!!!! Would be a perfect appointment for now and the future.

great player but not a sucessful manager..
wolves need to be looking for a manger to take them back up next season ince isnt that manager.
after the madness of sacking mick this far into the season wolves need to regroup over the summer, dump some of the players that frankly showed no passion or quality and get a experienced ballsy manager who can build a championship team capable of reaching atleast the playoffs. my vote would be the manager they sacked a few weeks ago
Mackman
Interesting comments, we certainly need something and whilst I believe we are doomed this season, it would be good to start getting ready for next season. Sadly A very big mistake was made appointing TC ( not his fault).
Perhaps we should give Incey a chance and see how it goes, it can't be that much worse.
Also a thought on the current players, perhaps we should give the younger ones a run out too(at least a few), also to some of our so called big name players- before you start thinking about your next premier league club, just remember if you aren't good enough to keep us up, you should perhaps think about earning your stripes again in the championship - as a team you should stand and fall.
Finally, this season has been nothing short of a shambles, and the club, team and owners are to blame.

Please....no more.
Only serious candidates can apply. When was Paul Ince better than Mick McCarthy.
The idea of getting rid of super mick was to replace him with someone better ?????

No! No! No! Just looked at your managerial record Paul, Notts County nine defeats on the bounce, As a Wolves fan we have had two managers this season like that m8 but I'm sure Morgan & Moxey could be interested with a record like that as they havn't a clue football wise .You were a terific footballer for Man Utd, Wolves, &England m8, And loved the qoute I wiil do it for Wolves as they are my club,No they aint m8 your were a great footballer who is now finished but a crap manager who needs a job.

We needed Alan Curbishley but through Steve Morgan's pig headed lack of vision we didn't get him. With all due respect to Paul what Wolves need is someone with a good football brain AND top flight experience but unfortunately that is not going to happen. We will get someone on the cheap and end up with another lame duck like Mick the Muppet. Heart goes goes out to TC, good coach but it ends there, sorry mate.

If he gets the job I will consider giving my early bird ticket away , he's done nothing and would be worse then conner

Some success in League 2 but Paul did not shine when managing in the PL with Blackburn. This would be a hearts over minds appointment. However...
Do Wolves have the services of a sports psychologist? Sports psychologist Gary Leboff wrote an interesting article on Wolves ailments recently and suggested that many teams need a chnge of routine in March after a long season. He ended:
"Wolves take note: you're not down yet, I've helped save clubs in far worse situations, one of them only last season. Teams that turn their fortunes around don't trust to hope or faith, let alone Lady Luck.
The catalyst for success is action. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it: that much is perfectly true. But if looks broke, plays broke and appears destined for the Championship, the time for hesitation is over. Break the normal routines and do something different.
Bring in Paul and/or Gary Mr Morgan, what have you got to lose? (Well, about £24M if you do nothing.)

Happily have Ince on board for the last 7 games, what have we got to lose? not sure about long term. If Di Matteo doesn't get the job at Chelsea, he would be my first choice. He is a year wiser since his sacking from the lot down the road, but within that year he has also gained much more experience as no.2 and currently no.1 at Chelsea

Exclusive ?? - this was reported 4 hours earlier on Skysports.
Would have to be a name that was considered i guess, and nice that he is putting his name forward.
Not really kept track of his managerial career so not sure of the type of football he tries to play, but his links to us will at least mean he understands us to some degree, and understands the fans.
Also was part of the team that gained promotion before.

No, no and no! to appointment this man would be disastrous! remove O'hara, remove johnson the poison amongst a good bunch and galvanise whats left, its probably too late but we must build for next season. Get him in to work with Connor for the last few games, maybe ,just maybe,he may have the right impact although I doubt it.Hire him until the end of the season and see what happens. It is quite obvious that Morgan and Moxey don`t give a damn about the club so maybe they too will be off soon, one can only hope.Today the team must go flat out to beat Stoke who are trying to get at us anyway by announcing they will make a £6m.bid for Jarvis,a move he wants to forget about as he cant take a step backwards in his career.Good luck today lads.

Here we go. We are in such a mess even the tea woman must think she's in with a chance!
The top brass must quickly put a stop to this sort of nonsense or the media/tv pundits will be picking our new manager.
I do hope JM is doing some background work on this incredibly important issue, and we are lining up a quality replacement, someone with a decent track record, someone who believes and promotes skilled football, and not someone chosen for all the wrong reasons.
The football world is littered with great players who could not manage, and few of the great managers are, or were, great players. But they are, and were, all damned shrewd and able to think on their feet. Our last manager, and this one, had all the badges one could wish for, but not the nous to buy the right players, pick the right team, utilise or encourage necessary skills or choose the right tactics.
On the tv last night MM was into 4-3-3, 4-4-2 etc etc, within seconds, a sure sign he wanted to suggest he knows all about tactics - wrong - it said exactly the opposite! It was school boy stuff.
C'mon Messrs Morgan and Moxey, speak out and put a stop to silly talk; don't allow a media celebrity parade to build up from which you feel obliged to choose a manager.
If it gets any worse I'll expect seeing the job advertised in the Job Centre and apply for it myself. With my tom cat as my assistant - he's one hell of a mouser - the sky's the limit.;)
Warrington Wolf
Here's one that nobody seems to have mentioned, ex Wolves and worked with TC, has taken a bunch of part timers seven points clear in his first season with a club who have the lowest gates in the league, young and keen, ok he's not got premier league experience but some of the other managers in this league hadn't before the start of this season - Colin Cameron
APtheDingle
i say yeah i think he'd be a good choice! he has cut his teeth with a couple of lower league teams and anll in all he did a very good job down there. He had a bit of a Baptism of fire when he took over blackburn in the Prem but he knows what to expect from it now.
we need a manager with fire in his belly a natural leader that will command respect from the players. Ince is definately that and then some.
with us more than likely to go down he'd be perfect to lead us in an assault of the championship and if by some miracle he did see us survive (if he takes over now that is) then thats a bonus and more credit to him.
Mick was/is passionate about this club but he has gone and wont be coming back! Ince has the same if not more passion for the club so he must be the ideal choice.

Its Gus Poyet for me!
Guvner
Does not matter who manages the club we still have the same problem MORGAN & MOXEY
Doyler!
I admit he is the only one with passion and is willing to serve us for only seven games if needs be! Okay he hasn't got a wealth of experience but there aint noone else!
Moxey saying that the manager works for wolves not the other way around tells me he is afraid of someone with more experience, knowledge, and positive tactics than he could ever imagine. His thoughts if we had a person in who has excellent pedigree would be the balance book! That will cost us! sod the success it will cost us and it will lead to a runaway engine, i will not be able to control, i will be out of my depth!
That is his train of thought. He needs to be hounded out! Get rid! He is not wanted. This club will not prosper while he is here!
Morgan needs to think deeply about a new manager. And I thnk he will in the close season. Players will go, without a doubt and I wish them well and thank them.
To stimulate the fans a massive change is required but will it happen. Lets wait and see.
You reap what you sew!
Old Golds Worth More
Talk about talking yourself up for a job! He will say all the right things if it gets him employed. But take a look at his management record and its not very good (granted its better than TC's). It seems to me that his main claim to the throne (for want of a better description), is the fact that he is an ex Wolves player. If he were to be given a job here, then employ him as an assistant manager to someone better qualified (if they'd have him of course) as I'm sure he would be a very good at motivating the team. From a personnel view point I'd rather see Ray Wilkins here in some capacity or other.
Noisy
60 - when Pat Murphy put this to him on 5live and he said "he's not a novice, he's 49" I didn't think Jez could make himself look more stupid, but I expect he'll prove me wrong.
However the people who come on here making up celebrity partnerships are as daft, "let's have and Wilkins". They don't seem to have been slowed up at all by getting rid of McCarthy to find the best we could do was TC. They still imagine Mourinho and Gaurdiola are sat at home waiting for the call.
Albrightondek
I don't dislike Ince, but his credentials as being a serious candidate for the job are hardly awe inspiring. Being sacked at both Blackburn and Notts County does not look good on a CV.
The fact that he played for Wolves and was very popular among the fans at the time, should not be the reason to award him the managers job.
I would like to think that the board have already drawn up a list of targets to take over in June. We do not what to see the same fiasco that happened a couple months ago repeated.
There will be many people posting their own preferences in the coming weeks. I would agree that we require an experienced manager and not a novice. The names of Bruce and Curbishley will no doubt be banded about, as will Clark and Poyet.
But what about Neil Lennon. With Rangers on the brink he could I suppose continue to win the SPL season after season. But would that satisfy an ambitious young manager? If he really wants to make it to the top, he needs to do it in the EPL, and the starting point could be at Wolves.
Churchy78
If Di Mattaeo loses out on Chelsea job, I would go for him.

Sorry Paul but it's not considered good form to try and conduct a media campaign to get yourself into a job. By all means give Jez a discreet phone call and let it be known you are interested but at the moment Wolves FC are such a laughing stock in the football world we could do without high profile media interference. If you are really passionate about Wolves then you would have realised this and not thrust yourself so blatantly into the headlines. Wolves supporters are suffering at the moment and are desperate for just one glimmer of hope. Unfortunately all we get is this kind of negative non story which further devalues us as a club. You were a magnificent player Paul and even at the twilight of your career you brought a dignity and passion to the Wolves shirt that few of the current crop can manage. Unfortunately it's your playing skills we require at the moment not your managerial skills. Thanks for the memories. At the end of the season some hard and ruthless decisions will have to be made. It's unlikely that we can do anything further till then. The time for gambles has long since passed.
Farmer Ted
Moxey and Morgan missed their chance to amend the mismanagement they have brought upon us in the last few weeks by ASKING the caretaker if he wanted any help. They should have TOLD him that he was getting help. Then they could have brought in anyone who was willing, be it Paul Ince or Paul Daniels.
Anything they do now, before the end of the season will totally undermine what the caretaker is trying to do and it would seriously emabarrass this club even further....if that's possible.
Planning for the summer and next season behind closed doors is a different matter.
Paul Ince ? He hasn't exactly got an untarnished managerial record, has he ? My concern with him is he somehow seems ill at ease being interviewed. Looking and sounding uncomfortable wouldn't be good in a dressing room full of footballers who often think they are better than they are. Not sure what his coaching abilities are, but, they weren't too clever at Blackburn and Notts County.
Meanwhile the speculation will continue, that's the nature of the business, but, worry not Wolves fans we will soon be yesterday's papers as the Premiership title race, FA Cup final and various promotion battles take their rightful places on the back pages.

I'm not sure about this one. Certainly we could have done with someone like Ince on the pitch this season - no doubting his credentials as a captain. Whoever we get, we need to get it right first time and choose someone who can drive us straight back to the EPL . I'm not convinced Paul is the man but I did admire what he did for us as a player. If he were to come, he would possibly be persuaded to inherit the existing backroom staff - which would save SM/JM paying further compensation. That could be a factor they might be attracted towards. Personally, I think everything has to change.

Fans better get used to it we are not going to get a high profile manager who will be allocated a big transfer kitty the reality is Morgan and Moxey will continue to do it on the cheap and that means a cheap manager and not getting rid of any backroom staff as that would mean paying compensation.Paul Ince would probaly except those limitations so he may be the best bet in taking us forward.

PI certainly wasn't in the running after MM's departure and I don't think he's the long term solution (but he could prove me wrong). In hindsight (what a wonderful thing it is!) he should have been given the job to the end of the season and if he still wants it now - to the end of the season - let him have it - it couldn't be going worse. However, it ain't gonna happen - there's only so much egg any man can retain on his face at once!
