Ward hopes for happy return to Carrow Road
Stephen Ward today called on Wolves to show the fighting spirit he remembers from their not-too-distant history at Norwich to get their survival bandwagon rolling.
Stephen Ward today called on Wolves to show the fighting spirit he remembers from their not-too-distant history at Norwich to get their survival bandwagon rolling.
The Ireland international made his away debut in Wolves' hard-fought 1-0 win at Carrow Road in January, 2007 made memorable for the visitors being reduced to nine men and a fantastic goalkeeping display from Matt Murray.
"Matt Murray had an unbelievable game, and as ever was modest to say it wasn't his best performance!" recalled Ward.
"I think that was the first time I went to left-back for a few minutes.
"I'd come off the bench on the left side and ended up dropping to left-back at the end. The team spirit is the main constant at the club ever since I've been here and it hasn't changed.
"It was really tough to go down to nine men but we showed we had enough to win.
"It was early days then for people like myself, Michael Kightly and Andy Keogh – we were looking to make a name for ourselves having moved up from lower clubs.
"They were exciting times.
"We'll need that same sort of spirit now although in different circumstances.
"We're going there in search of a victory to boost our survival push.
"We've had some good results there in the past and hopefully can get another one tomorrow."
Ward revealed the players have set themselves targets to focus on their survival goal. "We've set ourselves targets of the games we need to win and the games which offer the best chance of taking points," he said."There would be no better place to start than by getting a result tomorrow.
"We'll be going there all guns blazing to try to get the three points."
Wolves fans provided superb backing despite the team crashing 5-0 to Manchester United on Sunday and the left-back says it proves players and fans are united in their hopes for survival.
