Smith’s experience would have been priceless

It is hard to find a manager who ticks all of the boxes and whoever gets the Wolves job you get the impression it would not please absolutely everyone, writes Steve Bull.

That’s life and although some of the names being linked might not set the pulses of the supporters racing, it doesn’t mean that they are not good managers in their own right.

For example, Walter Smith was probably not the first name Wolves fans would have thought of when they were drawing up a shortlist of names, but he is still someone who could have done a job for us at least until the end of the season.

There is some logic in the Wolves board going for someone who has a good track record and is an experienced manager and perhaps someone like Walter, or an older manager, fits that template better than whoever else is available.

A lot of fans would prefer the club going for a younger manager with brighter prospects but when you are trying to avoid relegation from the Premier League you can’t put a price on experience.

And that is something that the likes of Walter and someone like Steve Bruce would bring to the club. They have a calming influence on the dressing room and that can transmit to the performance of the players on the pitch. Having been there and done it at the top level is a priceless commodity in football.

I have to admit, finding the right replacement seems to have been far harder than I thought it would be. For the life of me, I can’t understand why there isn’t a queue of people outside Molineux begging to take the job!

We’ve got a brilliant ground, superb fans and plans to develop the training ground into one of the best in the country.

Looking at some of the other candidates, I can’t believe they haven’t bitten off the hand of Steve Morgan.

For example, I thought Alan Curbishley would jump at the chance of coming to Wolves, especially after so long out of the game.

Maybe he is being picky, but he hasn’t got a job and surely he would be better off trying to save Wolves going down and trying to add to his reputation rather than sitting in the television studios for the rest of the season?

Whether the job is available on a short-term or long-term basis, at least it’s a job – and an excellent one at that. Put it this way, I’d be shocked and surprised if Alan gets any better offers.

For if the job is available until the end of the season, it’s like someone taking a part-time job with the aim of trying to progress to a full-time opportunity, and that’s the way they should treat it.

If someone comes in and keeps us up, they will be lauded like kings, so it’s a great chance for someone to enhance their reputation and either carry on at Wolves or walk away with their heads held high and find a job somewhere else.

I think some of the names mentioned who haven’t taken it are going to kick themselves in the future for passing up the opportunity. It’s the same with players – we seem to struggle to attract them and it baffles me.

But there are a lot of clubs worse off than Wolves. What supporters should also remember is that the club will do their utmost to make the right appointment.
