Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Now Wolves chase Brian McDermott
Tuesday 21st February 2012, 9:31AM GMT.
Brian McDermott is the new headline contender for the Molineux job with Wolves today poised to approach Reading for permission to speak to their manager.
But reports that another rising Championship boss, Brighton’s Gus Poyet, is also on Wolves’ radar have been dismissed by the Premier League club.
Wolves have also denied speculation raging last night that they were already in talks with McDermott, the 50-year-old successor to Brendan Rodgers who has been carving an impressive reputation for himself since taking over at the Madejski Stadium in December 2009.
But an interview with the man who led Reading to the Championship play-off final last season and has the club well-placed to challenge again this time around is on the cards – with Wolves receiving indication McDermott would be cleared to discuss the post with them.
It’s the first time in the hunt for Mick McCarthy’s successor that the name of a manager in-post has emerge.
Chief executive Jez Moxey stuck to his guns on confidentiality today and refused to discuss individuals but he did say: “We have been talking to people in and out of current positions all the time. All our options, including both short-term and long-range possibilities, remain open.”
McDermott, 50, has not managed in the Premier League before and would clash with Molineux’s original ‘job spec’ which demanded an experienced man wise to the ways of winning Premier League points.
But Wolves have struggled to find a candidate to tick all their boxes and are now willing to extend their search to one of the game’s most promising young coaches.
Behind the scenes, the pace is also quickening with the looming fixture at Newcastle, and the start of a 13-game sequence in which Wolves must try to salvage their season focusing the mind of owner Steve Morgan and his board.
Steve Bruce, regarded as a safe candidate but handicapped by a negative reaction from supporters, still leads the line of men ready, available and willing – and will even take the job until the end of the season if necessary.
McDermott, a former chief scout at Reading, is only a year younger than Bruce but fits into the category of the new breed of home managers making ripples in the domestic game.
He would also get a ‘leg-up’ from Wolves ex-Reading pair Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt, two players he was instrumental in bringing to England.

Ray Wilkins has declared an interest, if we are not going for Curbishley then he would be a good choice.
Strange if true as reported that Curbishley was Morgans choice, why did it go wrong?
Morgan’s way of running the club hasn’t gone particularly well so far.
Decision needed now, not Connor in charge for Newcastle.
wonder if the news will penetrate the dug out???
As for Fletcher doing it for Mick, he and the rest of the players should be doing it for the fans, who both they and McCarthy have let down spectacularly.
He needs to look at the results and table, and someone to tell him McCarthy is history.
Oh dear, this looks a cock up. Sacking a Manager pre-season is always a HUGE gamble. Not having a replacement already lined up is silly.
McDermott would be a huge gamble. What Premiership experience has he had? Should have given McCarthy the respect of having this season to get us out of the problem and sack him if we failed. This seems to be going pear-shaped. Will we end up with a Caretaker (Mr Motivator) til end of season or giving it to Terry Connor?
I can’t believe what’s going on. We are becoming a laughing stock, not just at WBA, but at Brighton & now Reading due to being linked with their managers. Why would they want to join a sinking ship and probably be back in the Championship next season (assuming we give them more than a 13 game contract)
I’ve had enough!!!!
We dont want bruce we want curbs.
Would prefer McDermott or Poyet over Bruce.
I hope they bring in a number 2 whoever comes in as Connor and the rumours as to why he has survived so long at the club and through so many managers needs to be dispelled.
What a mess! Mr Moxey is on a HUGE wage, yet is this the best he can do!! Scrabbling around anyone and anybody to replace Mick. Why weren’t potential managers not constantly monitored throughout the season, i know i would do it.
We had a good candidate, Curbishley, and he has pulled out. Why? because he had the courage to differ over footballing issues. How rediculous, using that rational they would refuse to employ Mourinho or Sir Alex. Let me tell you one of the art’s of management is listening to contrary opinions to arrive at an objective decision, anyone can surround themselves with yes man.
Now it would seem we are going for a manger with no premier league experience and not a particular strong record – the exact opposite of their original job description and the reason Curbishly pulled out. It would seem Steve Bruce has the courage to take the job on for 13 games, just do it and see what happens. If we get relegated we can spend our time choosing, if we stay up we have more options.Sorry Mr Morgan and Mr Moxey, this has been an awful display.
No novices they said, Rumour last night deal already done Steve Bruce starts on Thursday.
Out of the frying pan into the fire, should have been Hughton or Curbishley.
Oh and cannot wait to read some of your predictable comments about how these two managers are rubbish etc………. but yesterday same people were slagging off Bruce as he was nailed on for the job.
ITS ALL SPECULATION!!!
What a farce we have become. No plan A let alone plan B or C.
We seem to have no idea of the style of manager we want, frst we go for Curbs who plays football on the floor. Then Steve Bruce who’s teams are like Stoke only worse, Now McDermott who may as well coach aussie rules then Poyet who’s Brighton team are like Brazil 1970.
Pull your finger out Jez, we’d of been better sticking with Mac
Report abuse
I agree with 1 the players need to do the talking on the PITCH for the paying FANS !! not to the press.
We need a hungry manager not a failed one!
You must be joking Morgan how’s this bloke from reading going to keep us in the prem for gods sake give curbs what he wants
Report abuse
However you look at this now – Mick has gone so there is no turning back. We have to move on. We need to appoint a manager that feels he has the confidence & the ability to work with the players we now have in the squad. This means new tactics, team shape hopefully some academy players. I don’t think he will have problems with the likes of Fletcher, Doyle, Jarvis, Hennessey, O’Hara, Bassong – but the rest he will need to work on. Hopefully Hammil will impress and get a good run. Interesting times for Morgan – get it wrong now & “CAPOW” – by the way whoever does come in has to bring in their own backroom. If this is why Curbs didn’t get the managers job then Morgan & Moxey are gooses! New manager = new backroom staff. TC has been here since BC began ugh!!
The problem they have with Bruce will be money. If you want someone with proven Premier experience[which they said was important}and Curbishley has turned them down, then Bruce is the only credible candidate mentioned.Turner was unpopular when he was appointed, because Brian Little was popular. But the Board at that time still made the right decision.McDermott was about 50 before he became a manager. Some people like Mick McCarthy,Bill Shankly.,Brian Clough,Stan Cullis are born managers.Others are not, just good technical coaches like Sammy Chung,Colin Lee.If we go down the McDermott route it will again be down to money and a lack of ambition.
McDermott is ful of Premiership experience, as Moxey wanted!!!
What an underweliming link.
Morgan and Moxey have messed up big time by not getting rid of Mad Mick earlier!
Curbs was the only decent option but providing Premier League football on Championship mentality and budget clearly isn’t an option he wants to go down.
I’m sure Mad Mick only stayed so long as the board knew how hard it would be to get a replacement who were prepared to work under thier backward strategy.
Did we not sack him earlier because they knew we wouldn’t be able to attract O’Neil and Hughes on these unrealistic ideas?
We’re expected to pay Premiership prices on Championship quality and budget.
Moxey and Morgan you’re having a laugh.
You must change your thinking and get the ONLY decent option!
Embarrassing.
Mr Morgan might be good at building houses but he sure doesnt know how to run a football club.In view of the fact he disagreed with Curbishly on how the club should be run in the future,he has a moral duty to explain to the fans his vision for WWFC and more importantly how his views differed from Curbishly’s.Until he does the suspicion will always be that he is not prepared to buy quality premiership players or pay the wages to attract the right calibre of player needed to establish the club in the premiership. To be honest I dont think it matters who is appointed ,the club is in a right mess which we aint going to get out of. A truly depressing state of affairs.
Did this joker Morgan get brain freeze on his ski trip?
This is turning into a shambles. First of all we could possibly have someone in before the weekend, then after the weekend, then after the Newcastle game. Someone with prem experience, then we interview managers with no prem experience. If Morgan had decided on who he wanted there shouldn’t have been the possibility of them turning us down. Maybe certain managers ambitions are greater than that of our owner.
Whatever smooth act Moxey comes out with when interviewed with you can’t help but wonder what is going on behind the scenes at our club. It looks like at every point in the season wrong or no decisions have been made.
Failure to support investment in the team, failure to sack Mick before Christmas, failure to consider options if a change of manager was needed. It looks a mess and we look a laughing stock, and the players are in limbo and we only have 13 games to go.
Molineux pride? Well we all know what pride comes before.
Get a grip M&M before you ruin the club.
May I remind all Wolves supporters especially those who seem to think they know better than any person at Wolves that what is in the newspapers is speculation. Morgan and Moxey have guaranteed nothing will be in the public domain to protect the individual’s privacy.
Whoever, they choose we should give him 100% support, which is the minimum we need to try and get out of the relegation trap door.
I am saying stop making statements when you are unaware of the FACTS.
@2 – Bazwolf – Pear-shaped? Not half! This is becoming embarrassing.
Utter farce! Somebody should have been installed by now. Why do Wolves have to do everything the hard way ? It’s obvious who’s doing the negotiating, yes the fat controller who almost brought Stoke to their knees when he was there. Morgan please employ a Ceo that has a decent grasp of football.
I think McDermott would be mad to take the Wolves job. Things are looking bright at Reading now and only seeing Wolves results looks like a very difficult job to turn around. Two months ago I would understand Brian leaving but with the impending takeover and money to spend in the summer even if we don’t go up. However I think McDermott will be a hero by the summer for either team.
PS Don’t leave Brian!

If Houghton is a definite no go, I agree with post one and go for Ray Wilkins, ideally with Ince as his assistant!

The Flying Whinger :
If you didn’t like McCarthy then thats fine, Ive no issue with people having that opinion. But, he let the fans down ? Do me a favour. He may not have suited you, he may not have progressed our club as far as you would have liked as quickly as you would have liked, but the simple measurement of where we were before / after he came along renders your cirticism incredibly harsh.

Jez is a busy little sausage and has been all week – it would appear that the stress is beginning to take its tole on the big fella, and his compadre, Steve.
“Morgs” is silently worried that sacking Mick was WRONG for the club and the split board decision has left many board members feeling isolated by his casting vote decision… Mr Plant wanted to keep Mick on board until the end of the season to “wait and see” – a sensible decision, backed up by several senior figures (very well respected in the club).
Initially it was thought that the lure of a £1.25million contract and a large bonus for keeping us in the PL would attract many potential managers, but it has had a negative effect. SB, although wanting the role, has demanded £15m (min guarantee) in the close season for transfers if we remain in the PL – whilst Morgs thought the figure should be closer to £8m. Curbs had similar thoughts (although I have not had this confirmed)
a dark horse in this race would be Souness… he has close ties with Morgan and is a regular at Carden Park (Morgs’ estate) – it is rumoured that they met recently for a “chat”.
Don’t be surprised to see Benitez’ name thrown into the mix over the weekend – I hear his office has requested directors box tickets for the Newcastle game.
keep smiling.

What the hell is going on? We need a proven Manager with experience of the Premiere and they are looking once again at someone who doesn`t have that experience. Why did Curbishley pull out?Come on Moxey come clean on this one for once and tell us.Bruce is not one who the fans would want, look at his record at Sunderland.Ince doesn`t have the ability to manage in the big league as yet as he proved at Blackburn.Erikson shouldn`t even be in the frame.Ambition seems to be lacking in the camp again. It may cost but I have said it before why not go for Hughton or Pardew? Big Sam might relish being quickly back in the Premiere,Benitez has a good record.Come on Morgan and show some Ambition and show the fans that you do care.Fletcher says they will stay in the Premiere for McCarthy. Please ,someone, tell him McCarthy is history and they should be staying up for the fans and the new manager whoever he is.

It proves that the board had no intention of getting rid of mick but the capitulation against the baggies pushed them into appeasing us fans !!
I can’t believe that 8 days on nothing has happened ! A clueless chairman in my opinion proven by his ridiculous stadium plans . Relegated 100% this season and If I were an up and coming manager I wouldn’t want to work for this bunch of clowns , laughing stocks !!!

McDermott WHY ???
Wilkins sounds good, Poyet a good outsider, maybe another think about Curbs !!!

1) Ray Wilkins for manager? Yeah right. Can you explain to me how Fletcher has let us down? There are only 3 players to come out of this season with any credit and he is the main one!
Connor and Moxey out and we do not want Potato Head!
Of course we don’t know why Alan Curbishley pulled out of the managerial interview process but many people seem to believe it was because he could not live with Steve Morgan’s transfer fee and players’ wage restrictions.
If that is true, perhaps we should have advertised for “Wanted – manager with limited ambitions”.
The way this is all going, we will become the next Coventry City and where has all the money gone ? Come on Mr Morgan answers please.
Right Morgan…. Moxey!
Do you want the club to be revived?
Molineux is one of the best places to be when its excited and inspired!
I for one miss those days!
Employ Poyet & Wilkins!
Its that simple!!!
Employ another mediocre manager like this reading chappy (who was before his only job a chief scout) and again you will feel the wrath i fear!!
Shambolic. No disrespect to Brian McDermott but the ‘no time for a novice’ quote from Jez is evidence enough that he wasn’t on the radar to begin with. This is proving to be an utterly abject display from Mr Morgan who, as dealwolf (5) pointed out, will fail to appoint anyone with a realistic grasp of the game if they have to agree with his “vision”. Now Martin Swain is doing his best to win us over with his PR article on Steve Bruce. What a joke. Go back, sort out your musical differences and get Curbishley now, Mr Morgan. This is a mess of your own making – a knee-jerk reaction to appease the mob following a game that you chose to miss. Having Mick at the helm doesn’t look so bad now does it?

It would seem that time is wasted in the search of a new manager but perhaps time is needed to find a right candidate to manage Wolves.
Though taking too much of it would seems a travesty. Hopefully an appointment will be announced before the game with Newcastle.
Let there be more permanence in the appointment and the new gaffer a better position to take Wolves to the next level.
Lastly, I would thank MM for bringing Wolves to the PL and staying there for the 3rd season,an achievement not seen for nearly 30years. I wish him all the best in his next appointment.
Up the Wolves……

I never liked Mr Moxey and have seen no evidence to change my mind. He is turning us into a laughing stock. We need positive leadership on and off the field. A football brain as CEO and a vibrant no nonsense young manager, wth fresh ideas ,with a good backroom staff. P45s for Moxey, Connor and some of the failed playing staff are long overdue.
i cannot see why there are so many wolves fans against Steve Bruce???
if it is indeed true that Curbishly no longer wants to be considered then Bruce is by far and away the best man/candidate to take the job.
why would we want to hire a manager with no Prem experience to try and save us from the drop? it doesn’t make sense.
how much managerial experience have McDermott/Poyet/Keane/Clark had? not enough to take over the job at Wolves!!
Bruce has very good credentials, yeah he managed blouse but who cares?
it makes me laugh when people call the owner and CEO of our club, jokers or muppets etc, when there is no way in hell you could do a better job!!! it’ll be done in their time not your time.

First it was wrong to sack MM, he did not deserve it and history will prove just how much he did for our club, shame on knee jerk decisions made on a ski slope. Now it is done we will end up with nothing better with many of our best players looking for a move in the summer. I would bring Dave Jones back for now but he has more sense and again was badly treated. As for the others in the frame the only one who inspires me is Ray Wilkins.
Whatever happens, Wolves till I die.

I was watching Sunday Supplement on Sky TV and the Wolves managership was a topic for discussion. One of the press writers said the fans at the Wolves are one of the worst lot to please and are the nastiest in the English leagues when they turn on the clubs manager/hierarchy.
Even before the appointment of a new manager we have a split in the camp and the bile is already starting to be spat, this time its Moxey and Morgan.
I know I have had my hate moments but only after the McCarthy cock ups (the past 18 months) not prior to his appointment.
For goodness sake just lay off the hate and bile and wait for the new man and, whoever he is, give him the support he deserves but you seem to be making it a poison chalice.
Unbelievable! Mick McCarthy must be loving this!
It’s showing the typical Wolves weak management that could cause our demise – it wasn’t MM’s fault, after all.
“Vision?” Ha, ha. Moxey’s means desperation.
We’re doomed, I tells thee.
However, up the Wolves!
Sigh.

Crisis Club What Crisis? More of a joke club!
For a successful businessman, this must go down as a monumental cock-up! Look at the remaining games, can you see where we are going to pick up enough points! Damage limitation time, get in a manager who has the ability to get us back up at the first attempt and then keep us there, challenging for honors. Although unlikely, should we survive this season that would be great however the idea that 17th place is good enough might be ok for Mr Morgan but its certainly not for the die hard fans of this once great club. Personally I think it should have been O’Neil months ago but Curbishley would now be the long term answer. If thats not going to happen I would like to see Lee Clark given a crack at the big time.

Those those wanting Wilkins over McDermott-gat a grip. What managerial experiance has Wilkins got as number 1-zilch. He would be an excellent coach or assistant but not as top man. McDermott has proved himself as a good manager albeit in the Championship. There is a limited field out there. The obvious choice with Prem experience is Bruce but most Wolves fans are so anti that Morgan is scared off appointing him. Curbs would have been my choice but he has said no so good riddance.
Look at what Rodgers and Lambert are doing. Maybe we should take a punt at McDermott.

Honestly am totally confused what moxey is saying, first he said he will have manager by beginning of the week, then Morgan was happy with curbishley record and then some how he decided not give the job to him. Now they are chasing a manager from lower league, when moxey said they need a manager with experiance how to get wolves religation. I think what moxey want is muppet bot a manager so they could tell him what to buy and they know that who ever comes in will not save wolves.. I would never trust moxey at all!

I think we should have stayed with Mick McCarthy.I know he bought useless players and had no system to play to and couldnt change a game when it was going wrong but he always made me laugh in his post match interviews. What a funny guy he was, calling me and my mum `numpties` for questioning his tactics and then offering us to come into the dressing room and fight him. My mum nearly took him up on that one, shes a big lady! We both really miss his humour and daft northern accent (does anyone know if he put that on as part of his act, you know like Keith Lemon does for some of his characters, or is he actually from the North?)
Come back please Mick!!

i hear the reason we didnt have Curbishley and Bruce for that matter is down to wages, McCarthy wa son £500k per year so yet again Moxey and Morgan are looking for a cheaper option.
They said last summer we want premiership experience in players, then wouldnt pay for that, and now we are looking to get a manager on the cheap, no premiership experience? a gamble?
Didnt they say the job was for someone with experience of getting us out of this position??????
Do not believe a word from these muppets anymore, chmpionship here we come this is now for sure!!!!!

Ah..in the end it always comes down to small time thinking with our Wolves board doesn’t it?
They wanted a man with proven Premiership experience but now they have realised that that sort of guy has strong opinions, wants assurances about finances going forward and is unwilling to risk his reputation on a 13 game season.
Ah, but hang on… a young hungry up-coming manager won’t make so many demands, won’t cost so much and they can mould him in the ‘Wolves DNA’ – which basically means do things on the cheap.

Do some research peeps. McDermott is a very impressive candidate. No one Knows why Curbs fell away, its all speculation.Bruce would be a mistake IMHO. Really hope McDermott gets the job, exciting times ahead!

Wilkins has said he would talk to Wolves about it…
His experience could be vital… look to bring him in, pair him with a young guy and drive the club forward. Lee Clarke?
Maybe Moxey could forego part of his MASSIVE Bonus to get the most suitable candidate…
I dont think McDermott is the right man for the job,
I dont think that Bruce is any better than McCarthy,
Curbishley probably got a nose bleed coming north of Watford so had to turn it down.
Im glad Warnock went to Leeds- however looking at it he may have been suitable with his passion and drive…
Glenn Roeder and Glenn Hoddle… No Way…
Dave Jones… AS MICK WOULD OF SAID HEROIC FAILURE!
Poyet- Id go for him and Wilkins… That could be a match made in heaven!!!
But they need to take there time and get it right… Bit disappointed Clipboards still around but lets wait and see what happens… they obviously need to dig a bit deeper in their pockets to get the right man

What a farce. With no Mick McCarthy available to blame, who can you look to blame now.
Not only are the Albion making us look poor on the pitch, it appears that our boardroom and executive team are in as big a mess: at least the players accepted some of the blame, yet Moxey and Morgan move on regardless.
Perhaps our club motto should be “from crises to crises”. New stand looks good though and perhaps before they put the new seats in, they might want to consider saving money and leaving the top tier free as it will be empty next year.
Let’s face it, we couldn’t attract big name players and with Moxey and Morgan at the helm, I can’t see any manager with any sense wanting to join us. If McDermott makes the trip from Berkshire, he will soon discover that it is not as pleasant third from bottom as it is third from top and certainly Madjewski is a lot nicer boss than Morgan.
If we are going down the approaching other clubs route then get on the phone to Blues, offer them a pile of cash (bound to take it) and offer their manager the job ASAP and talk him round.
Sure it could be done if the right men were handling the recruitment process?
Also would love to be a fly on the wall to understand the different vision between SM and AC. Where was the difference and why?
We have been left in such a mess by Mad Mick in terms of points on the board and poor inbalanced squad on long term contracts that the new appointment has to be for teh long term. Realistically we are second favourite sto go donw the focus has to be on how the new guy can clear out 70% of the squad, who he will replace it with and how he will bring us back up and establish ourselves as a mid table premiership team. He can see how not to do it by looking at the way the 3 M’s have managed the current situation on Championship mentality. If the 2 remaining M’s are unprepared to learn from the mistakes from the 3 M’s then we have no hope. It appears they want another Yes man who will put up with signing limited players and hoping to hand onto Premiership survival year on year so as Morgan can build on our land and line his pockets!

I hope curbs comes out tells everyone exactly how there opinions differed and what morgans vision for the club is! By far the best manager we have been linked with for a while and we have let him slip through our fingers.

The most interesting piece of information that can be gleaned from this article is that the club have now shifted it’s position regarding appointing only a manager who is immediately available with premiership experience.
That certainly opens up the field somewhat.
The sticking point seems to be the conditions that the club wish to impose on candidates for the job. These may be so onnerous that even the most ambitious and capable managers will walk away, leaving only the most desperate for a job willing to take on the role on the basis of they have nothing to lose.
Uniquely, the owner seems to have backed himself into a corner, dug a hole, and is still digging.
I sadly thought that dismissing MM after the rout would have given the 2M’s plenty of time to get a manager in with enough time to have at least a week on the training ground. This was based on a presumption that they would have had ample opportunity to ponder the what if. Clearly, the defeat by Albion came as a giant surprise, at least to 2 out of 27000.
I haven’t commented on who I think should be the next manager, it is irrelevant plus I have no idea what SM wants, but I’m beginning to think neither does he.
My fear is that lack of ambition and willingness to invest in the transfer market will dictate who we get. We have a Championship side, apart from a couple of players, what’s the betting we end up with a Championship manager, who will be grateful of being given a chance. Of course, this will mean he will not be knocking on the owners door for cash. What’s the betting that TC will survive.

Spot on No 26 ..and plenty of others on one of the more informed and intelligent discussion threads.
The hierachy continue to make badly timed decisions at every juncture of each season.
Ultimately, Moxey is on 20k a week and this is the best he can come up with.
Having said that the Job is not for a Novice and that the Manager must have Wolves DNA, we appear to have basically acquired an A-Z list from The LMA and done a ring round
More seriously, if you remove Sir Jacks bankrolling of our Club through Moxeys tenure, and his truly remarkable final gesture of writing off our £40 million debt and giving the Club to Morgan for £10… then Moxey has achieved next to nil for this Club.
Without that £40 million write off, there would be no Morgan, and Wolves would be a struggling Championship side a la Derby / Coventry.
Moxey failed miserably at Stoke. His masterstroke was to mastermind turning them into a mini Iceland Team. It took Years after his departure to steer a new more successful course.
It was Moxey that brought Hoddle to our Club and left us £40mil in debt with no parachute payment.
Here we are again, ..odds on for relegation, a rudderless search for a new Mananger, with more DNA profiles than your average week on a Jeremy Kyle show.
If one piece of good emerges from this sorry process, it will be that Moxey is finally axed from his £4k a day jolly at OUR expense

What is wrong with giving the job to someone different? I think it’s probably the best option for Wolves to get manager who I would hope will bring in some different thinking, the Reading manager has been doing a good job in a difficult league, Poyet is another up coming boss, yes Steve Morgan didn’t have clear man in mind but Curbs has now turned us down, many Wolves don’t want Bruce, many want Wilkins? Why would he take the job? Does want to go back into management? Then yes the conditions are not perfect but these coaches and managers have any belief in thier own ability then they should prove there creditionals by taking the job on.
Also what do fans expect us to attract? Mourinho or Benitez? Come on. No doubt Mick did great when he took over however now we need a manager who is going to be a more talented coach in which I believe it’s been a serious doubt in my mind that standard of training has been basic at Wolves. Improve that then I think we should and are capable of turning things around.
I would be happy with Poyet it’s about time they went for someone who will I hope will have a vision of a progressive and positive type of football and at very least if I see that on the Molineux pitch and we still go down well it’s better than going down like team of mates having kick about on the local park, ironically such a group of friends could play better than this lot who get paid to kick a ball around a football pitch.

I love this great club, just like all Wolves fans. When I speak about my club I do so with fondness and a warmth which can bring a tear to my eye.
We all work hard and look forward to with anticipation each week we watch our beloved club, whether it be home or away.
For me all I want is transparency. Sadly, this is not what is being shown by those who run this beautiful historic club of mine.
Whoever is appointed I will back him, even if he was not the manager who I would have wanted. I’m sure that will be the case with all Wolves fans. But one thing is for certain if the club are honest and clear why Alan Curbishley is no longer in the running then the new manager will have a much easier transition.
Please be open and honest why Alan Curbishley is no longer in the running.
As fans surely we’re entitled to honesty.
My plea would be for us to go back to Alan Curbishley and speak with him again.
Good luck to whoever is appointed.

Cannot improve on what stourton wolf (57) has said. If i was Moxey (and you could do far worse) I would say to Steve Bruce, do your best for 13 games and see what happens. In the interim plan long term. Rebuild in the championship and come back stronger. Will Hughton get Birmingham promoted, may be, but will he have a budget from a bankrupt club – absolutely not. Then make a move. I sigh as i write this, but lets have some patience, and pick the right man. We are in a much better position than six years ago (thank you Mick and Morgan).Would i mind Steve Bruce short term, absulutely not. Is he honourable yes, is a long term prospect – i don’t think so, but I hope the board have the guts this time, if the results are against us, to grab an O’Neil when he is on the market.

2 million quid in compensation for Brighton is too much for Wolves to pay according to Sam Wallace’s tweets of the Independant, again penny pinching rubbish, where do Wolves want to go? What if Reading want 2 million then we are stuffed, did Bolton bulk over paying compensation when took Coyle away from Burnley? Pathetic management at the top!

None of this would look as shambolic as it does had Moxey not been so quick to do media interviews and spell out his ‘criteria’.
How many times do they have to say things that they then forced to back track on before they learn?
Can’t Wolves afford to employ a PR manager to give advice on such matters?

Sir Billy quite – To a point i agree, some moaners, especially on here grate. Moaning at this and that when nothing is confirmed. However I disagree that it was the fans that got Mick the sack. 14 points from 66 and a thrashing by our local rivals was the reason the board acted.

I can see what everyone is saying about Wilkins, great coach and knows Poyet, but how much do you think it would cost for the two of them, certainly more than Curbs I would imagine so I really don’t see it happening!! Although I think it would be very progressive of us if we did, but how many times has progressive and Wolves been used in the same sentence?
I think that answers that then!!

I don’t understand why there is such venom towards Steve Bruce.
Look, he wouldn’t have been my first choice OK, but we’re in a bad situation. Of the candidates left he is the only one with Premiership know-how. That’s what we need isn’t it?
Give him 13 games to save us. Whatever happens, we then know what division we are in next season and we have the summer to decide the way forward and appoint a boss for the longer term when there is more availability and time.
Surely this is the best we can do now – let’s not forget that Bruce did a terrific job with establishing Blues in the Prem against the odds and saved Wigan in worst circumstances.

Alan Curbishley has pulled out of the running to succeed Mick McCarthy as Wolves manager, BBC Sport understands.
The former Charlton and West Ham boss is believed to have dropped out because he and chairman Steve Morgan did not share the same vision for the club.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear… What does that say Mr Chairman???
McDermott is a genuine contender and on the shortlist for the role after steering Royals to third this season on a shoestring budget.

Yeah the points helped make the sacking easier but what truly got Mick the sack was the threat of the early bird sales and future ticket sales. The fans had started singing where Morgan can place his early bird and then what do you know he storms into the dressing room after Liverpool game… Then the sing again during and after the WBA game. This threat to Morgans wallet was to strong for him to avoid action. The Main reason for sacking.
Morgan and Moxey said many times they wanted MM even if we went down… so why does it matter who beat us?
In my posts around the time of the Swansea game I pointed out one of the main reasons for Moxey not wanting McCarthy out was that he would have to step up to the plate and find a successful replacement; He knows a dud now will probably end his Molineux career, (maybe, but don’t count on it); The farce that it has now become is entirely predictable from a Moxey led search; A good marketing man does not make a good football man, no more than a house-builder does; The candidate that everyone at the club was a shoe-in appears to have priced himself out of the job, both in wages terms and tenure; Mind you, that is his usual way of doing things as he has, in the past led a few clubs on a merry dance and is only keeping his name in the headlines until the West Ham job becomes available (mid October unless Allerdyce is in the top six of the Prem and playing Swansea like footy!); The laugh is having exhausted their original remit, the agents are being canvassed to see who might be interested, then when (if) an appointment is made, the spin will no doubt be, “this was our man/women all along”; YOU COULDN’T MECK IT UP !

I love Ray Wilkins. We all do. He’s a very intelligent, articulate man who has a deep understanding of the game.
But for me he is a number 2. An excellent number 2, but not really a boss type figure.
As an experienced ally to a Gus Poyet or a McDermott that could really work longer term. Just not sure this is the situation for that right now.

No thanks Brian. Probably a decent enough guy, but please stay with Reading.
Now Ray Wilkins ‘throwing his hat in’ should have Moxey and Morgan basically ‘picking it up for him’ and putting it on a new hat stand in his new office at the Mol.

Brian McDermott is a tactical genius, brilliant coach and one of the best scouts in the game. All things that have been badly lacking at Wolves. He would be perfect for the change of direction we need. Plus he gets Reading defending and nicking 1-0s rather than losing them. Brendan Rodgers failed miserably with that poor Reading side, McDermott got them punching above their weight from day one and let’s face it, Rodgers is no fool. McDermott is the next O’Neill/Moyes/Lambert/Rodgers type.

We are a top of the Championship/bottom of the Premiership club at the moment. A lot of Albion fans had to learn that lesson as well. For god sake we were out of top flight for a good 20 years. Remember where we were 15 years ago and pinch yourself.
Sorry just being realistic.

Can everyone stop panicing!!
The difficult part has been done in getting rid of Mick. At least the board are acting on trying to keep us up, cos we were definately on the way down under Mick.
Wilkins is appealing and maybe sticking him with D Jones or Keegan, could be a strong last 13 game partnership. But Wilkins needs an old head for it to work, not Poyet or Di Canio or any other one season wonderkid, there would be a clash for top dog position.
For me, any guy coming in must have Premiership managerial experience or else its a step backwards.
Ulimately the best candidate, as I stated 4 weeks ago before all this confusion, is Benitez.
I have my sources guys, so don’t write him off just yet!

#102/104, Sir Billy, what in effect we’re doing is chopping down a forest to get wood for a camp fire.

Now looking at championship managers? Looks like a complete shambles to me. Perhaps we should have sounded out potential replacements before we got rid of Mick. However, to all those who wanted Mick out congratulations, you’ve got what you deserve. Next time be careful what you wish for.
On a similar note, a large section of our supporters, lets call them…..the thick ones, have wanted Karl Henry out of the team for a long time. Sent off at home to Villa (he was a silly boy to be fair) meant he was missing for the home defeat to Liverpool, where any shape, cohesion or bottle existed in midfield, missed the game against “ten man” QPR – lucky escape, and also missed the game against West Brom. The case for the defence rest your honour!!!

Finchy – it doesnt really matter who beats us apart from it was someone immediately above us in the table who we are supposed to be competing against. 5-1 against anyone in that category is as Mick said, “Unacceptable”.
So bearing in mind the manager has said after 2 of the last 3 games the performances are pathetic, after the nightmare last few months too, what do the board do? Carry on, or, change it?
The threat of early birds affecting finances is one thing, but the threat of relegation which is what Morgan is really worried about and rightly so, is another altogether. He had to make a decision and decided to try something else. Timing sucks as should have been done earlier, but cant really blame him for making a change overall.

”Time will provide the truth but it would be no surprise now to see Wolves switching the search to men in work even if that clashed violently with Moxey’s initial assertion that this would be a job for a hard-boiled candidate with experience of winning Premier League matches.
The point is that the urgency which followed McCarthy’s exit has given way to hesitancy and dithering – and worryingly point to a lack of preparation in the event of a hardly-surprising managerial change.
Stop building him up as some messiah.

wouldnt mind mcdermott seems a knowledgable type of guy doesnt seem the type of bloke who would insult us on a regular basis.its all about showing a bit of faith and giving someone a chance.would get us organised hard to beat.i think if he was to come we would all rally behind him and the team but something tells me he will stay at reading because of the position of their club is in to ours he has got them on a run which if he stays they could well be promoted but it would take a miracle to keep us up because mccarthys signings since we have gone up have been poor and his loyalty to championship players have left us in this mess, whatever the outcome of this season if they got someone like him in i would probably renew my earlybird, sitting on the fence for now will wait and see.

Why are we not taking a serious look at Ray Wilkins? He’s openly said on talkSport and reported on ESPN that he would love the opportunity to Manage Wolves. Cheslsea have gone downhill since he departed and he’s still in tune with the Premier League. Give him a shot, better solution than Bruce and he has more top level experience than McDermott.

ANNOUNCED ON WM SPORT PHONE IN THAT CURBISHLEY WAS OFFERED A 2 AND A HALF YEAR CONTRACT BY STEVE MORGAN , BUT HAS WALKED AWAY BECAUSE HE ONLY WANTED A 13 GAME CONTRACT WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT HE COULD LEAVE IF WE ARE RELEGATED !! HE SAYS HE IS A PREMIERSHIP MANAGER !!! GIT !!

Can’t see Gus going to Wolves as…
1) He is happy and doing a good job
2) Just signed a 5 year contract & is committed to B’ton
3) Fills the new stadium 20k every home game
4)Can you see cheapskates Mox and Morgan paying the £2-5m compensation?
5) Why would he want to work for a club that’s run so badly under the TIGHT rains of Messrs Mox & Morgs?
6) Why would he want to come to Wolves, the 1st Prem Club to approach him????
Sorry, I rate him but I just can’t see him taking it on. Looks like we will get potato head from Little Britain then??
Looks like w’em in a right mess, thank you Jez!!

just listening to phone in on WM, Apparently curbishly was offered a 2 1/2 year deal but he was the one who only wanted to stick arround for the remaining 13 games incase we got relegated. He obviously not confident in his own ability to keep us up.

Whoever is appointed should receive the support of the fans, to do otherwise would merely compound an already fraught situation.
However, the one definite plus-point to come out of all this is that messers M&M will have nobody to hide behind should it all go wrong.
Their smugness and evasiveness won’t wash now they no longer have Mick’s integrity and media savvy to deflect the critical gaze.
The feeling that they got lucky with McCarthy’s appointment will only increase should they botch the current issue.

I have never been a Happy Clapper and feel that Mick needed to go but a lot earlier. However, I cannot believe what I am reading. Chose either a likeable PUNDIT with no success as a manager and NO experience for years ie Wilkins or a current successful manage( in the Championship) McDermott and you lot are clambering for the pundit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are Wolves a struggling Prem team in the relegation zone we are not going to attract Morrinho or Benitez or why not Redknapp.
Get real and give McDermott a chance.

This is getting so embarassing. Nobody seems to want to manage us, and it looks like we are destined for the Championship. In my opinion we need to get MM back

You lot are hilarious. About 2% of all your posts are vaguely rational. The rest are extreme knee jerk unfounded rants based on Chinese whispers. You’re like a flock of sheep, veering from one irrational spat to another.
Not sure your club is a laughing stock. It’s you lot that are a laughing stock. The few hundred or so of you who come on here, bleating and spouting over stuff which seems to have little basis in fact.
To unbiased outsiders, it looks like the club is handling it as well as could be expected. They outlined an ideal candidate profile, they are also exploring other options. How is that not sensible? They haven’t appointed anyone yet – it’s been nine days since they sacked Mick, how quickly is realistic? If they’d put someone in inside a week, you’d all be saying they’ve acted in haste…
Those of you still suffering bigclubitis might think you have the clout to prise Lambert / Rodgers etc away from their clubs. Some of you with extreme conditions have mentioned Moyes and such like. Keep taking the tablets. For the Premier League, you’re a modest, relatively sensibly-run club. Yes, you have a proud history but if you’re a member of the sleeping giant brigade, I’d check its pulse because it’s been weak for many years and it’s currently in the midst of a pretty cold winter. You’re shopping in Sainsbury’s at best, not Selfridges. People like Steve Bruce, or upcoming prospects are the market you’re in.
The blokes in charge are the blokes in charge, like it or not, so you have to go with their choice and trust they’re doing it because they think it’s best for the club. They probably know better than you who will be the best choice. Even if they don’t, tough, it’s their call. Back your team and your new man.

Come on Wolves fans, listen to 65 Coach, if we are going down that route the only man for the job is HUGHTON, GOT prem experience and flying in the Championship IF we go down and also impressed in Europe!
If we end up with a sub-standard manager on the cheap I will not be turning up for matches anymore, I will go off skiing like Morgan. That was so disrespectful missing OUR biggest game of the season, why didn’t he go when we were playing Liverpool, shame on you Morgan and your incompetent sidekick!

As a Baggie I’m probably not very welcome on here at the moment.
When I was wondering who we could go for if Roy was offered the England job Poyet and McDermott were two names that came to mind. The thing is that lots of people on here have been envious of Lambert and Rodgers but when their clubs took them on they were a gamble. In tghe words of Clint ‘are you feeling lucky.’
The alternatives are Bruce, might keep you up but long term he’s a dinosaur and hardly a step forward from Mick. Wilkins, really???? Lee Clark, couldn’t quite make it when he had everything stacked in his favour. Curbishley, been out so long he would have been a massive gamble.
Who else is there? I always thought Sean O’Driscoll seemed a very honest bloke whose team played good football on a very restricted budget. Apparently he’s a Wolves fan as well. You could do a lot worse.

Funny how none of the above is the overwhelming favorite in the poll.
Could be a long drawn out affair as we still have to interview all the football league and conference. Scottish, Irish and Welsh leagues. So expect an announcement some time around Christmas.
Seriously though if it is true that Curbishley (and i use the words if it is true loosely) turned the job down for those reasons then he is’nt that committed to the cause and it’s right to move on to other options.

164-London Bloke third best team we most certainly are
We were European pionneers long before every other team in England and
Only Man United and Liverpool are bigger then Wolves.
Our name is known all over the world as the “famous Wolves”
And as for the new manager I personally would go for the recently departed England manager…….

what about this one….Gus Poyet has stated that he would love to take over at his former club Tottenham. With Harry’s departure imminent for the England job Gus would need to get prem experience and reputation before he would be even considered to succeed Harry. Morinio would be a good shout to be Harry’s successor who would do 2 seasons max as we all know before moving to Man U once Sir Alex retires. Poyet would then if proved himself at Wolves take the vacant post at Tottenham.
Another mouth watering thought Ray Wilkins and Gus as his right hand man!
Only if the 2M’s were as ambitious as my wishful thinking lol….

This mess reminds me back to the 80′s
1. A owner who doesn’t care & knows what he’s doing.
2. Ground with one stand finished.
3. Team heading for relegation.
Time to get Steve Bull back in some position to sort it out..

It strikes me that after the mess we find ourselves in and trying to appoint a new manager it was never going to be a snap decision.
Mick did us proud in getting to the promised land but hand on heart he’d taken us as far as he could, the last 22 games tells its own story 14 points, this in itself sums up where we we’re heading, square pegs, tactically inept, no real plan B and a stubborn reluctence to give the fringe players a run in the side, regardless of the drubbing Albion gave us, would it really have made a difference if it was Fulham, Blackburn or the like, that kind of result surely would of ended in MM being sacked as its unacceptable, it was plain to see after only 10 mins we were being hammered, did he change it “NO”, we luckily got to half time all square, the stats read Albion 20 shots at goal(on or off target) Wolves 3 shots at goal(on or off target) did he change it “NO”. Lets face it this is the way its been since we reached the prem under Mick’s stewardship. “HE HAD TO GO”
Where do we go from here and who do we appoint, its got to be right and its got to be the right man
Wolves now need a lift on and off the field , players and especially fans alike, this great club needs whipping into a frenzy and a manager who can provide it and transfer it into the stands and to get the team playing attacking, flowing and fluent football, i believe we have the players to do this they just need to be played in the right way via team selection and “TACTICS
I would look no further than KEVIN KEEGAN , flair, passion and commitment and respect from all in the football world and also a Wolves fan as a boy, i dont see any name mentioned that could provide this “FRENZY” but im convinced mighty mouse could.

I agree
When are we gonna learn, Wolves identify a target, previously players, but they now appear to think they can do it with managers, and just pressume that, because we are Wolves & we want ‘ value for money’ that the other club will just allow us to do as we wish!!!!!
Bizarre
I bet every other club in the land dreads a call from Moxey, I’d imagine it goes something like this, other club “we want £4m” JM, “I’ll give you £200 k, £100 k now, £50k next yr & £50k the yr after” other club laughs & puts the phone down.
Then JM issues statement, we did everything we could to get our target, but the other club were just unrealistic with their valuation, later that week player is sold to one of our rivals for £4m, sound familiar ?????
I for one am sick of hearing it, I don’t want us to run round like idiots spending money we don’t have, but that also has to be tempered with being prepared to pay ‘ the going rate’ for targets.
Remember this Moxey, this time next year when we are scratching around in the middle of the championship, with 13,000 av gates & we are losing money every home game & your usual hefty annual bonus is disappearing in front of your eyes!!!
If we want Poyet, then go get him, why do we feel Brighton should let him go for nothing, or any other target for that matter, get on with it, we have a season to save, stop dragging you’re heals & decide what you want, just don’t let it be Bruce!!!!!!!!

Bully is a legend at wolves… He couldnt manage in the blue square north and didnt last long at Stafford… What makes you think that he could cut it in the premier league or the champtionship for that matter… I for dont want him to risk his status at the club by becoming a failure as manager!
One thing is for certain… None of us know whats really going on behind the scenes… Im as disappointed with the amount of time its taking as the next man but they need to get it right… at the end of the day its Steve Morgans cash thats at stake here and if he wants to employ daffy duck then its his decision! If anyone thinks they can do better get your cheque book out and buy the club off him!

This is becoming embarrasing. I’ve said all along that this club is run with a championship mentality by moxley, morgan and mcarthy before he got the chop.
Both look out of their depth with this task, and I’m afraid I do beleive the newspaper reports in this case.
In my own job as a manager,I have to recruit staff and I know that you must decide from the start what essential qualities and experience you are looking for then you must stick with that and find the candidate that ticks the most boxes.
Moxley after sacking Mick said they were looking for an experienced prem manager. They should have been aware that they would need to be pay more than Mick got to get in a manager like Curbs, bruce. Also any experienced manager would want assurances about the vision of the club and investment in players, and would want their own backroom staff.
Apart from Mick no experienced prem manager wants a relegation scrap season after season and if the new manager kept the team up with the limited squad we have now, they would demand money to spend to significantly strengthen the squad for next season. This is all common sense.
I think this is where the problem lies for the 2Ms as we know they like to do things on the cheap and didnt like what they heard particularly from curbs.
So I think thats why they have panicked and appear to be abandoning their original brief and going for potential, but inexperienced and cheap instead.
Mcdermott and poyet have done great jobs at their clubs, but this is different. this is the premiership and Wolves are a very tough club to manage. Are they really up to it?
What is even more embarassing was that the baggies got Hodgson (imv an excellent prem manager) with no fuss and he came to their club and works within the clubs existing structure.

It was time for Mick to go, much as I personally liked him, but even those who were agin him must now have a sneaking admiration for his ability to work alongside the other dynamic duo. The days following his departure have revealed that there are other weaknesses to be addressed. Whoever now gets the job is going to have one hell of an expectation placed on his shoulders, even more so than was the case a few days ago. It wouldn’t surprise me if they turn back to Bruce and then tell us it is because they have exhausted all other possibilities. And we are so weary of it all, we’ll go along with it – for now. Hope we get lucky on Saturday. UTW
